Don’t shop here! Thought we’d support our local small business by buying our home remodel supplies from here. Buyer beware! They charge a 15% restocking fee on returns! We purchased $ 600 worth of cable railing supplies. Everything fit into a shoebox. We ended up deciding not to use the cable railing for our project. We were charged $ 80 on the return of UNOPENED products! Never will we ever shop here again.

I don’t know what this guy Craig Y is taking about with his one star review, this is full of true West Seattle locals, the place has been a fixture of the area for almost a hundred years! The guys will always help you plan your project, very knowledgeable and helpful. The quality of their wood is head and shoulders above home depot and really anyone around. The old guard is passing the baton to younger salesmen, and they are awesome! Anytime we have had would delivered the driver has always been cheerful and happy to help unload. Whenever I am in the yard I never hesitate to ask any one where something is or if I can get a hand because they all seem to be very helpful and want to give you what you need. Hands down the best lumber yard in the area as I said they’ve been a fixture for almost 100 years and I hope they are around for another hundred great group of guys! They have sponsored a little league and football and all kinds of parades and such in the area, so where I don’t know where people get the negative stigma about them. There are not many places where you see the actual owner out in the yard moving stuff by hand and working on a forklift right alongside the yard workers. Long live Alki Lumber!

Very high prices and a grumpy staff make this the last choice for my frequent weekend DIY projects. Avoid it or get your ego and wallet beat down at the same time.
I tried to shop local and keep my money in West Seattle, but with basic supplies like treated 4x4x8s sky high priced at $ 15 ($ 10 at Home Depot) I just refused be taken advantage of like that. Plus, each time I convince myself to go there and ponder a project the sales guys act like it’s a huge annoyance to take time from what appears to be their actual job of standing there looking at the wall practicing their stink eye looks. Sure they have quality stuff, but you’ll pay 30% more for it and they’ll make you feel like you’re a jerk for trying to buy it from them. The nail in the coffin is that they still write up their receipts by hand, so mistakes are frequent.
If you need something small or want to talk to happy helpful and true locals go up 5 minutes to the Junction True Value. If you need lumber, give in and go to Home Depot on 1^st and Lander or on Delridge.
No doubt that there’s a line of developers drooling over their location. I hope they can offer the magic number to them soon and get this place off our West Seattle doorstep. It’s a shame too, if they were welcoming like the rest of West Seattle it’d be a local legend shop for the right reasons. Instead, it’s a dirty box of grumpy old guys too tired from waving their fist at kids to ‘stay off their lawn’, to actually help anyone.
To be fair, and look on the positive side, if you’re looking for a great audience to try out your new racist Obama jokes or a woman wanting to be ogled as they ‘help’ you with you project this is a great place for you. Welcome to paradise!

I’m not exactly sure, but I believe that this place caters more to professional tradesmen. The cuts of wood here seem light years better than some of the crap you get at Home Depot. Also, the variety and selection seem greater. But there’s a balance because I believe you pay more for the pleasure.
I did redo my back deck roof at one point it had that wavy green transluscent fiberglass stuff. I ordered steel roofing from ALKI lumber they delivered it and it was awesome. I’ve ordered other wood from them for some projects and have been more than happy.

Convenient location, fast delivery (most of the time).
Ridiculously high prices.
Everyone there (except the delivery drivers and this one guy) are old curmudgeons and do everything in their power to let you know they hate their lives. Honestly, the delivery drivers are the best part of the business. Extremely chipper and happy to help.
The guys at the front desk are the problem. You can tell they only like working with contractors (old guys like themselves).
The only reason we continue to shop here is because of the location and we want to support local business.
Just thinking about the treatment I received yesterday, grinds my gears.

I set out to build a Giant wooden JENGA set and since I live in a tiny, urban apartment, pined my hopes and dreams of this awesome JENGA set on the talents, patience and willingness of Alki Lumber & Hardware to help me make my dreams come true. Low and behold, when I walked in and laid out my plans to have them cut me 54 10 ½″ long pieces of 2X4s, I was met with a knowing smile and nod and was told that «Heck yes, we can cut those 2 X 4s for you» and «Heck yes, we can even have it ready for you by by tomorrow.» And at a great price!
These guys and gals are friendly, have really good prices (at least on lumber), have lots of tools at the ready, and are a great local business. They support little league teams, will help load up your car, don’t charge ridiculous prices for special jobs, and are genuinely helpful. I’d seriously recommend checking them out next time before heading to home depot or lowes– they just might have what you need, and you’d be helping out a local business. Plus, they have a cute dog who runs around the store.

Fabulously friendly, knowledgeable and nice selection. Can you imagine not having this resource??? Woodinville Lumber just went out of business and laid off more than a dozen people in the process. Please keep your dollars in the ‘hood and buy from the Alki Lumber team whenever you can avoid a «big box» store for the same item.

While trying to work on a garden project, we decided to buy our lumber from the local place and keep our money in our community. And holy crap, did we put a lot of money back into the community that day.
The prices were pretty ridiculous, but we were already behind on our project so we decided to push through. Later on I looked around at other lumber yards and Alki Lumber’s prices easily topped out their competitors in the Puget Sound area.
I wouldn’t mind the prices if the wood was amazing quality, but the boards I got were… eh. Every one of them had a bit of a warp or twist to them, which made the project more of a pain in the ass than it needed to be.
meh and double meh. I’ll go elsewhere for my lumber needs next time.

We stopped in here to get supplies, thinking it would be a great way to support the local biz. But everywhere I turned I saw right-​wing political posters and disparaging cartoons of the President, and articles completely taken out of context. It just made us feel very uncomfortable, and we did minimum business with them to avoid any conversation. I have enough on my mind than to worry about what they think of my Latino coworkers.

We are definitely not contractors. These guys were still very, very helpful for our deck project. Their lumber selection is great, and their advice is invaluable. I consider their hours a barrier to entry that allows them to focus on the customers that are serious about using them.

This place is sort of freaky if you are into Homer Despot. Don’t worry, they won’t bite you, but may give you weird looks if you are not a regular. Like McLendon’s they carry stuff that actually works the first time.

Older gents behind the counter that know exactly what they’re talking about, and have to constantly put up with the likes of us fast-​moving «can you tell me what I need…». Good place, good staff. If you’re not a contractor and you’re there, it’s probably because you couldn’t find what you need at Home Depot, and you need it bad. Considering that that is a significant percentage of their business, you shouldn’t be worrying about how «fantastic» their customer service is (and they’ve always been great with me), and be thanking your lucky stars that they’re here!

Customer service is really hit or miss. Some employees are friendly and courteous, others have passive-​agressive hostility, and yet others are possibly deceptive. Do you want my business or not? If you can get past that it’s not a bad place to get lumber. I came twice in one day for the exact same product and got two different employees. They do the receipts by hand, the old-​fashioned way, so got two different quotes. The prices were not much more compared to Home Depot and they even helped me load my wagon, which was very much appreciated.

West Seattle’s lumber yard for decades, with the best knowledgeable customer service you will find. The people there know the local contractors reputations making them a great resource. I have been a customer there for 30 years.

Man, these guys were a BIG help to me on my remodel project! They were friendly, knew what they were talking about, special ordered items for me, and delivered them allllll the way from West Seattle at a reasonable rate!
I couldn’t have asked a for nicer bunch, and I’m giving them the highest rating, a pat on the head (butts are out these days) and singing their praises.
