I like Indonesian food. I admit it. Yes, I’m a Bule, but I’ve sampled enough of it to have developed some standards. When I ready my steeds and my chariot for some urban hunting, high expectations accompany me. Horses tend to have substantial appetites and the wear on my chariot is also a concern. There are other issues that arise, but I’d prefer not to get into all that at present. I showed up on the scene with my ceiling missing, and was quickly served the Ayam Goreng I haughtily demanded over the phone. In anticipation of the obvious questions regarding the quality of said chicken, I can only recommend it with but half of the heart that pounds like a hammer within this mighty chest, shaking its walls and indeed the walls of establishments for miles around. The batter should be batting 9th in the lineup, let’s say. The meat, is not the sort you’d like to meet in the street when you’re on your feet tryna eat. I’m actually making myself ill here, so please just go eat at Satay in Wallingford instead, their fried chicken might make you dance like machine gun fire or Vybz Kartel.

Great local food truck for Wedgwood. We’ve enjoyed every dish we’ve tried. Highly recommended.

When I saw the Goreeng Food Trailer at a Central District block party, I realized I’d never had nasi goreng, aka Indonesian fried rice, which seemed like an oversight. Now I can say I’ve had it and it’s tasty! As you can see from the photo, the menu is pretty minimal, which I really don’t mind with a food truck — it keeps the line moving. With your fried rice($ 7) you get a choice of meat, and the guy recommended the chicken, so I went with that. What I got was a takeout carton packed full of hot, fresh fried rice topped with cilantro, onions, pickled carrots, cucumbers, and big chunks of breaded, fried chicken in a spicy-sweet sauce(sort of like General’s chicken). It’s about a 3 out of 5 on the spice scale, so definitely get a drink or you’ll just have to come crawling back in shame a few minutes later to get a bottle of water, like I did. By itself, the fried rice was a little underseasoned, so I’d take advantage of the condiment bar if I had it again. Service was fast and friendly, and the portion was generous and filling for $ 7. No complaints here! Next time I’d be curious to try the«Indo tacos»($ 2) and their Thai iced tea.

Best pork fried rice I’ve ever had in my life. Still thinking about it. YUM.
