BEAWARE: I had a problem with the free hub on my Easton wheel. I called Herriott Sports Performance and they fit me in that following morning(Saturday, August 17). I also asked that they cut the steering tube. With the positive reviews and professed performance focused staff, I expected this should be a simple task. When I picked the bike up, it was covered with dust, the stem, neck, seat post, and seat post clamp were all badly scratched. Yesterday, when replacing the headset, I found that the steering tube appeared to be cut with a hacksaw. The cut was far from clean, the fiber partially cracked; the cut was crooked and at a strange angle. It was clear that Tommie Richter, the mechanic working on the bike, wasn’t experienced at this. Now, I am stuck replacing the scratched parts and can only hope the steering tube holds up after Tommie’s hack job. .. I could have(and should have) completed the repairs on my own. BEAWARE, I question HSP’s ability to care for and repair high-end bikes. .. strong riders don’t always make strong shop owners.

This is the place to go if you’re: 1. Competitive cyclist. 2. Triathlete. 3. Looking to improve your cycling skills/ride. 4. Getting your bike dialed in, fine tuned, and/or upgraded. 5. The gym rat looking for a new thing to check out. Todd Herriott and David Richter both own HSP and are exceptionally accomplished competitive cyclists with years of coaching and racing experience to help guide you towards the podium. HSP also has other instructors who have specialties of their own(see the website, ). Product selection: Each and every product HSP carries is a product they’ve tried and can definitely give their two cents on. In addition, HSP offers a program where you can try out a bike saddle for a specified amount of time. But please note, if you’re looking for a bicycle, don’t walk in to expect a selection of bikes like out of Gregg’s Cycle or Recycled Cycles. However, you can order a bike through them or see if the nice race worthy bikes on the sales floor are worth your salt. Service: When all else fails, I’ve definitely depended on them for when I can’t dial in my shifting or something ‘weird’ is happening. The the pre and post comparisons are very noticeable. Bike Fitting: Life changer and the best way Todd Herriott put it is that there’s not point in having a nice bike if you hate riding it because it’s uncomfortable. I used to ride a couple times a month, now I think I could be on the brink of divorce if I keep riding! The bike fit can be pricey but you’re also throwing money out the door if you dumped a lot of money on an expensive bike you hate riding. Also, it’s nice to go on rides where I don’t feel like my back and shoulders hurt. Factoid: HSP may be able to order you products that you may not see in their shop. For example, I’ve ordered a Rock Shox fork(Sram), LOOK pedal cages and other items that weren’t on display. But my bias is I try to support local. Classes I regularly do: Computrainer This is a fantastic class for any class cyclist looking to improve. The coaching feels very customized and you really get some real quantitative data during these sessions. Heather who usually handles the AM classes can give you great coaching advice and is encouraging. Redcord active This class is, as the website describes is for everybody, including those who aren’t cyclists. You’d think, «ah, the class falls short of an hour…» but after your first class, you’ll realize it has«ninja intensity» as you will feel the soreness much later after class. Even the most seasoned people in this class find it challenging as you can adjust your difficulty easily. The Overall Value: You may be outside looking in feeling intimidated by the high end feel and think it’s not for you or the only people who go to the variety of work out classes probably think only super fit people do but you’ll be shocked that I’ve seen men in the 50s plus do Redcord and do pretty well and ladies who are just there for the work out. But I will say to sum it up is that if you strive for your personal best, HSP isn’t just for the ‘high end’ folk, it’s for those who can appreciate being valued that way. Factoid II: UCI cycling champion Steve Tilford once went on HSP’s infamous Rocket Ride, a ride worth gauging your racing salt!

Excellent establishment, great staff + owner. It’s my default choice for all things cycling in WA, even though their location(Fremont) is just about as INconvenient for me as possible relative to my home and work on the Eastside. But HSP is worth the drive, hell — they’re even worth sitting on the 520 in rush hour gridlock. In a past life I’ve worked in bike shops that hoped to build themselves up to this caliber, and in those days I swore one day I’d open a shop just like this myself. These guys are doing it right. Don’t go there looking to price-comparison shop for entry level or midrange gear. For that, I suggest you visit Performance or REI. HSP definitely has fair prices, but they sell top shelf stuff and they don’t apologize for the top shelf price. Nor should they. The gear they sell has proven itself under race conditions over the long haul. Cool hardware aside, the true value of working with HSP comes from the staff — their bike fit analysis and fitness training programs will let you get the most out of your sport — how fast you want to be is up to you, they’ll help you get there. Their combined cycling knowledge is probably higher than that of some ProTour teams. Go there, and tell them you want to stab the beast!
