I would just like a take a moment to rant about the demise of great small restaurants all over Seattle. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fully aware of why this is happening and the necessity of it, but it’s seriously killing all of my desire to contribute to our economy by spending obscene amounts of hard-earned income eating out almost every night of the week. Moxie, for example. It’s been on my «check-out» list for a few months, and I just recently had the pleasure of being graced with its presence. Parking was easy on a Sunday morning(and by morning, I mean noon). Granted, the company I was with will probably make any restaurant seem great, so I may be a bit biased here. We were seated promptly for brunch, and served our steaming coffee within a few minutes of ordering drinks. I had the chicken-fried steak and eggs. Delicious. Not heavily breaded, and not sitting in a pool of oil is always a plus for me. I loved that we got roasted and diced baby reds as opposed to more fried hash browns. I love me some grease, but there is a limit. I digress. The eggs were sunny-side up, and actually sunny. Shocker. I don’t know how many times I’ve either been served eggs that were basically raw, or fried black on the edge. My friend loved his chicken-fried steak as well. Another good colleague had the mushroom omelette, which she devoured in between gulps of fresh-squeezed orange juice that was surprisingly not too pulpy. The service was on point, coffee re-filled promptly, and our server split the check without so much as a wince. So here’s a great little restaurant, in a supposedly great«foodie» district of Seattle, that is now being forever extinguished from the Queen Anne landscape. The disappointment of what it’s turning into is insurmountable. Granted, I am an avid fan of Vietnamese food, but Moxie was a great part of Queen Anne.

I have been to Moxie three times in the past two weeks and I have yet to eat there. BUT, I have been doing a lot of drinking there! Atmosphere is my fav… sexy and cozy both in the lounge and in the dinning area. They have a Chocolate & nuts Chef‘s weekly duo on the dessert menu. Last week was a half baked chocolate cake with a pistachio sauce. Let me tell you how it was… ITWASFREAKINGGOOD!!! Looking forward to finally having dinner at Moxie. Probably within the next two weeks.

Good balance between comforting food and creative cuisine. The menu is just the right size. You can quickly look through the selections and find something that hits the spot. The food was well-prepared and portioned just right. The goat cheese and fig jam was delicious as were our entrees(clam bolognese and duck breast). The dessert(pumpkin empanadas) was above average but not amazing. The pumpkin caramel sauce carried most of the flavor and was very tasty but the empanadas themselves were a bit boring. One small quibble: there’s no salt/pepper/Parmesan to be found anywhere and you have to ask for them. The menu is somewhat traditional, but the plating is truly exceptional. Each dish has its own personality and you can tell that each detail was carefully chosen. The plate for my bolognese resembled a papasan chair, and although it sounds strange, it felt like the perfect way to present the dish. I really like the simple and efficient layout of the restaurant and the soothing décor. However, I felt like we were seated way too close to other guests even when the restaurant was only half full.

I was underwhelmed with Moxie, but would be willing to try it again. At first, one of the waitstaff was rude to me. I walked in and they told me that I could not come in because they had 20 minutes before they opened. I was able to walk in because front door was open and it was in fact only 10 minutes til, my mistake. I left and sat in my car for 10 minutes before returning, only because I was waiting to meet a friend there. I just didn’t see why they couldn’t have said, have a seat and I’ll get you a glass of water while you wait. After being seated though, our waiter was nice and pretty attentive. The food was ok, but I was not blown away by anything. The Mussels Diablo were tasty, but my steak had a funny flavor. My dining partner enjoyed her very large pork chop. On a positive note, they have decently priced happy hour, and the inside is incredibly cute and trendy feeling. The bathrooms are adorable as well. These kind of things go a long way with me, as I feel ambiance is super important. Moxie is now accepting the Passport unlimited card. Their brunch menu looks delicious, and for the passport price, I’ll give them a second chance.

Service: Atrocious. The people were nice enough, but they were slower than genetically altered tortoise-sloths. We showed up at 5:40 and it took 20 minutes to get our drink order in. Complicated order you would think, right? Nope 4 waters and 3 teas(for a group of 4) should take 2 minutes tops, not 20. Once she brought our tea it was another 10 – 15 minutes before she remembered we were there to take our orders. She was a little inflexible when asked to modify an order(to conform to dietary restrictions), but finally allowed it after checking with the chefs. Once our order was in we waited another 20 minutes for our food to show up. The food only took 5 minutes to eat because the portions were smaller than necessary for a mouse– Portions: $ 30/plate and after eating it I was left thinking, when is my food coming? Oh, right, it already did, and I’m still hungry. Anyway, after sitting ther with empty plates for 20 minutes they realize we’re done and ask if we want dessert. At this point we’re almost late to our show so we ask them to get our checks, which takes another 10 minutes. The checks came and the bill was wrong… ShouldI expect any different at this point? The food: Was pretty good. Small portions ESPECIALLY for the price, but pretty tasty. The menu: I hope you don’t like variety because this place has 6 – 8 entrees to choose from. If you don’t see something you like, too bad thats all they got. So, heed my warning, if you want a decent serving size and good service, stay away! I can’t speak to the bar as I just had dinner, but in that regard this place is a nightmare!!! The Manager was really nice and helpful at resolving the billing concern, but that doesn’ make up for the terrible service.

I can’t tell you how TIRED I am of ordering food that costs 25 – 35 dollars and receiving an appetizer’s worth of food. How hard is it to fill up the plate with something your customer can actually leave full with? I understand the presentation is a big deal and you’re also paying for the atmosphere and service, but come on. Your job is to provide me with food, and this place failed miserably. First of all, I ordered the scallops(the second most expensive entrée on the ridiculously small menu) for 28 dollars. The next higher up one was 30 dollars and that was the cod. I love scallops. When I received what looked like a kid’s size portion of scallops I was severely disappointed. The scallops weren’t even that big, albeit they tasted great. I ended up eating from everyone else’s plate and eating more when I got home.(And I weigh a normal amount and eat an average amount, I promise.) Secondly, the service here was horrible. When we wanted our check, the server took 20 more minutes to get us out of there. We were rushing to the Nutcracker afterward even though we informed her we had a show to get to. The ONLY good thing I can say about this place is the steak and the ribs were plentiful. The rabbit(«bunny» they call it) was alright. And that’s about it for all the entrees on the menu because they didn’t have a flipping menu that amounted to more than half a paper. I would like my money’s worth. But there won’t be a next time. I can say I will NEVER advise people to go here. DON’T GOHERE!!!

Ginger Grapefruit Gin Rickey. The alliteration is enough to love it and I haven’t had a ‘rickey’ since I used to hang at Steuben’s in Denver. So fun to order and SO good to drink! Have 2, or 3, or… hey, I live close, it’s ok. Order the lamb sliders and truffle fries to soak up the sugar and alcohol. Great service, they serve food til 1am, have nice array of arts brochures in the ladies room, cozy bar, odd mix of tunes, but overall a great late-nite sure-thing.

I’ve been to Moxie several times for Happy Hour and it always pleases me. The dirty vodka martinis are served ice cold and the lamb sliders and frites are TODIE for(I’ve eaten lamb sliders elsewhere that are twice the price, but don’t taste half as good the ones at Moxie). The bartender told me that the lamb burgers are half beef. I think that makes them taste exceptionally good. Moxie’s small bar has a great vibe with good music, and the dining room is cozy and intimate. They attract a mixed crowd. There are often people there getting a quick drink before a show(dressed to the 9s), local workers there for happy hour, and couples on dates. The happy hour menu is very reasonable and well worth checking out. The staff has always been nothing short of exceptional. They have fabulous bartenders!

«I’ve got moxie, I’m so damn foxxy.» — Lauryn Hill spits that out in the beginning of one of her last songs recorded with the Fugees. I start singing it every time I think about going to Moxie. Which, lately, has been often. I celebrated a promotion last November at Moxie, and tried some pretty wild beverage concoctions, but it was nothing to write home about.(I guess I mean it was nothing to Unilocal home about.) But my girlfriends and I decided to try it out for our standing Sunday brunch date, so we strolled in around 12:30pm. We ordered a round of those foxy moxie mimosas, which are made delicious with Grand Marnier. The brunch menu is tiny, and only has one sweet option, which I reallllly appreciate because I much prefer savory breakfasts. However! I did see that french toast walk by and if I ever did decide to order something sweet, that’s exactly what I would want. We actually followed Ethan C.‘s advice and got the eggs benedict with fabulous heirloom tomatoes and the chicken fried steak, which I would have NEVEREVER ordered, except I saw it being served to the table next to us and decided I had to have it. I did not regret it. Everything was delicious. DELICIOUS. So delicious that we decided to polish our meals off with yet another foxy moxie mimosa. Mmmmm.

Food: 5 Stars Service: 3 Stars Ambiance/Environment: 4 Stars Crowd/Noise: quiet I’ve always wanted to try Moxie, but never really had occasion. I received a gift certificate from a co-worker and decided to take the little lady out for some brunch. The dinner menu looked pretty fantastic, but I wanted a more laid back experience, so we opted for a brunch(we’re big fans of bfast). I was a little nervous when we saw that Moxie was quite empty at 1030 a.m. But we were SO surprised with our food. Service was a little slow, had to ask for more coffee and water, but the food was fantastic. The GF had the eggs benedict, the classic brunch dish, but Moxie kicks it up a bit. instead of english muffins, they use crumpets from Pike’s, and throw in a beautiful slice of yellow heirloom tomato. Accompanying the dish were some delicious duck fat fried potatoes. I had the chicken fried steak with poached eggs. This is the best chicken fried steak I’ve ever had. It was more panko battered instead of heavy bread crumbs, which made it nice, and the cut of sirlion was quite tender. The gravy was not too salty, not too sweet, and the chef made sure there was the perfect amount – not drowning the dish, but not lacking either. I also had the same tasty potatoes with my chicken fried steak. To top it off, my eggs were poached to perfection. not sloppy and wet or rubbery and overcooked. Also, my drip coffee was excellent. It’s a little pricey for brunch($ 12-$ 14 ish), but for my money, it’s better than Portage Bay, plus I don’t have to wait for 2 hours for a table. The menu is quite small, but I think that’s a good thing. Everything on Moxie’s brunch menu looks extremely tantalizing, so it makes you want to try something new every time. Check it out. I hope I didn’t just get lucky with my visit, because we WILL be going back.

Sooo… I had previously written about Moxie and spoke highly of the environment and crowd but, for the life of me, could not remember what I ate. Luckily I’m an optimist and never cease to give someone a second chance to change an impression. I took my sis her here for her 25th bday and we sat at the bar. Our tender was a riot and engaged with the full house of patrons. We got to sit next to some colorful and fun peeps AND… I can tell you EXACTLY what I ate. The lamb slider was d’lish! The frites could have used a little more edge… crisp and season. The pakoras were oh so yummy and the crab cake sand was perfectly spicy and moist. We really had fun and I would definitely consider this one of the best counters I’ve sat at in a while.

Yes, yes it was, A-OK. Went for martinis and some bites, and spent a TON of money! Not their fault, I have good taste in Vodka. They have good taste in martinis. Yum yum. Ordered frites, which were decent, nothing AMAZING… but fried potatos are fried potatos. Were they supposed to be different than fries? The best part was the bartender. Super funny and entertaining. The second best part was the 2nd bartender, who couldn’t WAIT to get out of there — and wasn’t hiding it. «Can I leave now? How about now? Is now good?» The poor other bartender was like, «FINE, but you might be coming back so don’t get loaded.» The third best part, only because of the funniness of it, was the hostess that kept coming to the bar, flirting with the bartender, and drinking wine. While working. Humanity at it’s best. I don’t live near hear anymore, so I won’t be coming back. It was a good experience, even if it was lacking a bit of moxie(ha… ha…). PS. Awesome artwork.

Moxie’s got no moxie =/ We stopped by here to sit at the bar and try the drinks and bits of food, to see if it would be worth coming back another time for a full dinner some time. It took 10 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge us when we sat at the bar. He came over and asked what we wanted, even though we hadn’t seen a single menu yet. We asked for the food AND drink menus– he gave us the drink menu and disappeared. He finally came back, we ordered drinks, and then he disappeared before we could ask where the food menus were. Finally got the menus, with our drinks, and tried a few things. The 2 cocktails we got were the most watered down drinks I have ever gotten anywhere: A manhattan with a skewer of maple bacon in it. I think this would have been interesting if it had been a real drink, and not a glass of water with a splash of bourbon in it. Yuck. My drink was basically cucumber water. Bleh. I didn’t even drink half of it. The glass of ice water I had there tasted better than this. Serrano ham croquettes: These were actually tasty. But deep-fried ham and gruyère is pretty much always going to be tasty, isn’t it? The best thing of the night. CURRIEDSHRIMPCAKES: Flavorless enough that I didn’t know what kind of meat was supposedly in them. Lamb slider: Just okay. The fries that came with it were kind of soggy and bland. Chicken BBQ sandwich: Surprisingly bland for what it was. I’m actually really glad we tried the bar food– it saved us from coming here and spending $ 100+ on a real dinner. ***Update(already?)*** Someone from the restaurant just messaged me, and I’ll let you try and figure out what their point is. It’s nice to see what they really think of their customers! –Normally I respond to a review like this with an offering of a gift certificate to try and win you back. but when I got to the part about the crab cake I realised, I would be wasting our time… we don’t have crab cakes… they are curried shrimp cakes… hmmmm? We are known for stiff drinks and have a 10 count on martinis and manhattens, if you know what that means. thanks for your time and words… PM– *I have corrected the ‘cakes’ comment.

Went for the 30 under $ 30 event. I think I tried to like it a lot, between the whole trying to get parking in Lower Queen Anne, and it not being anything special, I was … meh. I have no words to describe it. Solidly average, perhaps? They do have really yummy champagne cocktails. So that’s a good thing, right? Average. Yes. 3 star average.

Moxie should rename itself to Chinsy. I went here during happy hour with a friend since it was from 8 – 10 and there were so many reviews that were positive. It makes me wonder what others are seeing that I did not recieve in person. The service was ok but very slow. The bartender was bragging that there were only 5 people working there, so i wonder why if I saw 3 we could not really get refills promptly. I looked and there were about 9 people all sitting at the bar, yet our entire row was sitting with empty glasses while he played cards with the other half. i am ok with this but how about hooking up the drinks first. Now onto the food. We ordered a few items off the menu, namely the frites(french fries) and a mini lamb slider. When it showed up, my friend commented what a measly portion. I was thinking meager myself. The lamb burger was the size of a 50c coin and cost $ 3.00. I should have gone to McCormick&Schmidt were $ 2.00 gets you a half pound burger. Its flavor was fantastic but I felt ripped off honestly and man was it slow in arriving. That small cant take long to cook. The bigger disappointment was the frites that showed up in a martini glass. That should let you know how small the portion was. They were ok but damn that was a cheap portion for a fair markup, I think for drinks and a lounge with cool music, this is a good place. But for food I would pass it up. Its just not satisfying and leaves you wondering where you should have gone to eat as you sit and starve.

Went for the first time a few weeks ago. They have a very friendly staff. We ate at the bar, because the pre-opera crowd had the tables booked. The owner came by and chatted with us – was very entertaining. Although the prices are upscale, the owner/wait staff give Moxie a neighborhood hangout feel. The location is convenient. Not just for Seattle Center events — also close to the Uptown. The menu always has at least 2 vegetarian entrees — without relying on cliches(portobello mushroom, butternut squash ravioli, pasta primavera). Before ordering, I recommend getting advice from wait staff. The menu descriptions need some work. I was surprised(in a good way) when I ordered the chickpea entrée. It turned out to be crepes with vegetables — delicious!

MOXIE –noun Slang. 1. vigor; verve; pep. 2. courage and aggressiveness; nerve. 3. skill; know-how. I had a debate with my friends at bar of said restaurant over the exact definition of this word. I decided to settle it once and for all, here on Unilocal, for all the world to see.(Unfortunately, «all the world» doesn’t include my friends who were discussing this with me last night, since they don’t use this site, but let’s just go with it.) Does the food at Moxie have…(wait for it…)… MOXIE!!! Rating system: M = Moxie! NM = No moxie. SM = Sort of moxie… Rating of the bar bites: Duck confit flautas: M Beef empanadas: SM Risotto cheese ball things: NM Cheese plate: M Lobster bisque: M Bottle o’ Grenache: M Rating of my entrée: Venison ragout: MMMMMMMMM! It was all chunky and gravy-y, served over ravioli full of butternut squash and sweet onion. Given my love for game meats, anything savory involving squash, and ragout in general… moxie times a million! Too bad it was the nightly special, so I don’t know if I will ever get to taste it again… but the memory will live forever. Also, the staff has moxie, the location has moxie, and the ambiance has moxie. This is the most moxified thing I’ve ever written.

Time for another happy hour, and this time, we walked into Moxie. With their 8:00pm — 10:00pm happy hour, they seem to fill an under-served happy hour niche, and the filled bar area added some evidence to that theory. With a well-stocked selection of alcohols lining the wall and a corner filled with wine bottles, we ignored the prominent choices and settled on beer. With about six beers on tap, we went with a couple of seasonal brews to match the winter weather. The $ 1.00 happy hour discount for drinks left the price per pint at about $ 3.00. Next, we sampled our way through several selections on the bar menu. Many of the choices looked appetizing, but we finally settled on the duck confit flautas, the arancini, the baked crab dip, and the medianoche sandwich. Of the items we did not try, the empanadas and the lamburger sliders came highly recommended by our bar neighbor, a friend of the chef. Everything was cooked just right with the exception of the arancini. We were split over whether it may have been fried just a little too long, although none of the fried items were the least bit greasy. Of note, the pomegranate-ancho chile dipping sauce with the flautas was very powerful with a little going a very long way, and the medianoche sandwich was dressed with a mildly tangy mustard that even I liked(and I am not a big fan of mustard at all). The atmosphere was upscale, but very welcoming. The bartender was very friendly and attentive, and we even managed to strike up a conversation with our neighbors at the bar. Although certainly not the best value happy hour in town, the food quality at Moxie is excellent. I will go back for the food and friendly atmosphere, but just not too often.

Long ago, SO and I ate here for a not-so-memorable dinner. But that was B.Y.*, so I’ll just write about my most recent experience. An impromptu outing with friends landed all 4 of us here for a little late dinner. We had some well-mixed cocktails and then ordered from the ‘Small Bites’($ 3-$ 5, 8pm-10pm every night) menu. We tried everything except for the chili: Lamb sliders(?didn’t have personally) Pomme frites(not bad) Oysters Fritter(eh) Caesar salad in an anchovy crêpe(wow) Cauliflower gratin(damnnn good) Salt cod cakes(purdy good) Potato and cheese croquettes(omg!) Carrot soup(damnnn good) + 2 excellent desserts.(omgomgomg) Wine by the glass for $ 5 and attentive and fun servers made us all want to return to Moxie soon. *B.Y. = Before Unilocal(I am now on the Unilocaltonian calendar. We’re coming to a close of Year 1, for me.)
