Best fried shrimp — best gumbo — best raw oysters but not every day(call & make sure if you want them) — best onion rings — best cold beer in a fish bowl mug — best place to eat since I can remember through all my 59 years! The only thing I don’t care for are the marinated crab claws l. They need to get the recipe from Ernest’s. Theirs taste weird — like they have spinach it the marinade, or something weird.

I ate here years ago and it was good and decided to try it again. Got the shrimp poboy and it was awful It was made from pre battered frozen shrimp not freshly made gulf shrimp. I think there are some new owners.

Not good experiences. Forgot to put folk and spoon in my take out bag. Tasted very average. Disappointment.

Pretty decent food. The gumbo was good for lunch. Service was good. Food came out pretty fast. The place has some character. I will be coming back when working in Shreveport.

They get five stars just for surviving and preserving this great old place. When you drive up it looks like the wrong part of town and you question going in. Go ahead it’s fantastic. You will feel like your on a movie set. The food is good. It all looks great coming out of the kitchen but be cautious. It’s hit and miss. Probably what you get will be tasty and priced right. Add a side of fabulous atmosphere and you will leave happy. I gar-on-tee!

We had a long, long wait to get in to Herby-K’s on the day of the Independence Bowl. So long, in fact, that we drove around to grab a vegetarian bite to eat for my mom and missed them calling our number(the hour-long wait we were quoted was closer to 30 minutes, in practice). When we returned, though, they were very accommodating and got us seated about 10 minutes later. There are two sections to this restaurant: a bar side and a dining room side. We had a large party and were seated on a raised platform area in the back corner of the dining room. The ambience is definitely more«hole in the wall» and less«fine dining” – football was playing on the TV(they even changed it to the bowl game we wanted to watch!) and there are college pennants strew across the walls and hanging from the ceilings. Most of got the shrimp buster, a big sandwich heaped with fried shrimp and a house sauce, with coleslaw and fries on the side. If you’re in the mood for something fried, this’ll do the trick. We got an order of onion rings on the side – nothing special, just your standard onion rings. The shrimp étouffée was probably the tastiest thing I tried on the menu – my dad said it wasn’t the best he’d ever had, but we both agreed that it was very good. Our servers were helpful and patient with a large group that needed a lot of splitting done to the check. tl;dr Solid cajun meal. I’d definitely eat at Herby-K’s again, but none of the food blew me away, especially relative to its rave reviews online.

Best Cajun food in a fabulously unique setting. Totally worth sitting at the bar and just checking out all the souvenirs collected over the years. The étouffée is the best I’ve ever had: including New Orleans.

There is a reason why this place is the last man standing in an area of a time gone by… don’t miss it, you will not be disappointed!

I give 5 stars for ambiance and staff. We were greated and sat pretty quickly despite the large crowd and small seating area. The food was just OK. If you are going to bill everything as from scratch I think you should cut your own fries. My gumbo was hot and tasty but very salty and a small portion. It was described as a cereal bowl size but was really a cup size. My son had the shrimp buster which was good but again the fries were disappointing. As some reviewers have noted it is a sketchy neighborhood. All in all a good experience but glad we didn’t wait too long for it.

Not too impressed with the overall quality of this restaurant. I was disappointed with all the hype from other reviewers and the friend I was with during this visit(he had been before). The place is very small and if you don’t get there before the rush, you’ll be waiting in a cramped space(or outside) for a long while. We shared the gumbo/étouffée sampler which was pretty good. I saw many articles hanging on the walls there that mentioned their shrimp buster so I ordered the smaller version(baby shrimp buster) with onion rings. The shrimp batter was bland and lacked any flavor, the onion rings were good, and the bread that it was served with was okay. My friend ordered a special platter that was listed in the chalkboard that included stuffed and smothered fish with étouffée and it was pretty good. I ended up getting sick later that night from this food, may have been food poisoning. I was pretty disappointed with this Cajun food myth of a legend and I don’t think I’ll be back.

Amazing place. Great food — we had the crab cakes topped with crawfish étouffée which was out of this world. I think it was a special the night we were there — should be a regular item for sure! Order a local beer to go with it(say oak-aged Reasonably Corrupt from Shreveport) and you’ve got a great night on your hands. Interesting atmosphere — picnic tables or booths near the bar — your pick. Interesting location — an industrial area in need of more industry — but the food and friendly staff well worth the«adventure».

Any good cuisine that Herby-K’s could theoretically serve is constantly sabotaged by their comically inept service. They have a sign that reads«good food takes time». And It does! If by good food you mean arriving completely cold and not anything you ordered. There was literally not one thing that arrived properly. We got one beer instead of two. We got large catfish instead of small. We got two large bowls of white rice instead of one gumbo. Never saw the onion rings that ended up on our bill. And this wasn’t even a busy evening. My first, last, and only, experience at Herby-K’s was two and a half hours I could have spent somewhere else and enjoyed the night(even at a chain like Cane’s!) It’s unfortunate that many restaurants in Shreveport suck. Most locals would be content eating canned ravioli over a hobo campfire, so good taste is definitely not present in this town. Perhaps Herby-K’s is just giving the people what they expect. For good PoBoys I suggest Kim’s seafood in Bossier instead.

Where do I begin… this is a hole in the wall and better than any 5 star restaurant hands down. The atmosphere is rustic the staff friendly, cold beers and fresh seafood. I tried the oysters, boiled shrimp, shrimp buster and crawfish etoufee and i wish i had a bigger stomach to try more. Next time I’m in Shreveport this will be my first stop!

Reverence for this«Shreveport institution» has to explain a lot of these five star ratings. Otherwise Herby K’s is just over my head. I was dying to eat local flavors on my recent trip to Shreveport. Unilocal reviews led me here – to a cozy hole in the wall located in an abandoned part of the city. I couldn’t wait to sink my spoon into the Seafood Gumbo/Crawfish Étouffée sampler. I was disappointed that the shrimp in the gumbo looked wrinkled and pruney, like they’d been soaking in a tub for too long. The flavor was weak and forgettable too. Fortunately, the Crawfish Étouffée had a more robust flavor and it was chock full of crawfish. It tasted like it had beer stirred into it, which is fitting given the tavern feel of the restaurant. My mom ordered the Shrimp Buster and when I asked her how it was, a weak«meh» was all she could muster up. Overall, we felt let down especially given the enthusiasm for this place on Unilocal. Our server(a man with locks) was very polite and delivered attentive service but the food at Herby K’s was overrated. This can’t be among the best that Shreveport has to offer.

Upon first arriving at Herby-K’s we were hesitant because it’s set on a little street in a seemingly seedy area. However, upon entering I found it to be a nice quaint little restaurant with long, counter seating at the bar, and 4 or 5 booths; it is a small restaurant to say the least, but there is a larger outside seating area. The décor is old and homey feeling with various awards and autographs on the walls. The menu is filled with your staple Cajun food options like étouffée, gumbo, and poboys. As a novice to Cajun food, the crawfish étouffée was good and hearty with over a dozen crawfish pieces mixed with rice in a small cup served with bread on the side. The fried oysters were tasty, but even better with their homemade remoulade. The gumbo was equally good with sausage and chicken. The best thing we had was the poboy in my opinion. Nice bread, awesome fried shrimp inside, and perfect with some squeezed lemon. The service was relatively attentive and friendly in offering us suggestions on what to order, but it could have been better. Meal stats: Food wait time: ~15−20 min Price: ~$ 15 person(bill was $ 46 for 3 people) Drink refilled: 0 times Service: 3⁄5 Food: 4⁄5 Overall: 4⁄5 Would I come back? Yes. Would I drive all the way from Dallas to Shreveport for it? Probably not, but if I’m passing by I’ll make an effort to stop by. Though the service was ok, the food more than made up for it.

Nice to see an actual dive serving good flavored food. True, like the other reviews, I may not have gone in after seeing the front of the restaurant but I also like a good dive. I was there on a Wed around 1:30pm. That must be the end of the lunch crowd because on the patio with 3 community picnic tables lined up I took one of the last seats but it cleared out within 15 minutes or so. I came on a rainy day but that didn’t stop the crowd. I tried the lunch special: ½ of a catfish poboy and a cup of crawfish etufee. $ 7.95 The catfish on the poboy was a good piece of fish and the poboy was about 6 in long. Could not imagine having a full order. The crawfish etufee had a little kick but not enough to turn you away. Every spoonful had a crawfish in it which I appreciated. Would send anyone visiting here for some good local flavor.
