The goat stew was good except for the fact that it was salty as hell! The chips were good. I used a Groupon and it was still pretty expensive. Meh.

Howard is very friendly and patient. I asked him what kind of tacos I should order aside from my pastor tacos and asada tacos. He suggested the lingua and I’m glad I did. I also ordered the asada quesadilla. He packed my food to go and added the yummy complimentary chips. I’m satisfied with this place and it definitely hit the spot!

So I have only eaten here twice and it was decent both times. The burrito was ok, nothing special. The birria was interesting, the meat was a bit fatty and the broth was thin and salty, but that might be the way it’s supposed to be as I’ve never had it. Heads up, it’s been hot AF in there both times I’ve been and walked out sweating.

Tucked away in the same mall as a dental office, a water vendor, Tom’s Teriyaki(?) is a friendly little restaurant that specializes in birria, which is a mildly spicy goat stew that originated in Jalisco. All you really need to know here is that their chivo is excellent(served on or off the bone) and even the burrito version is top notch($ 5). The Sunday afternoon service was excellent, friendly, and I would come back again!

I’ve been to Tlaquepaque myself: A place known for its raspados(snow cones), its Mariachi(at El Parian) and its art crafts & souvenirs — nice Temple, plaza and Kiosk too — but I don’t recall its being famous for Birria, as opposed to the Nine Corners near the Cathedral in Downtown Guadalajara. Tlaquepaque is a ways out of the capital, Guadalajara, Jalisco, by car or public transit, midway to Tonala. But, I digress. I ordered the Birria burrito and one Birria taco, as well as a Mexican coca cola. The cook wanted to know if I wanted red or green sauce with such determination that it seemed crucial. I said I wanted sauce on the side so as to deflect the question but he insisted –I opted for the red salsa. I had heard anecdotally that Birria was consumed by toreros(bullfighters) in Jalisco who had a taste for real meat flavor(a carnivore taste not just for beef following a «faena» or bullfight but for goats, that is). So, yes, goat or «chivo» has a distinct flavor, texture and gooey viscosity. Yet, I don’t consider myself a Birria connoisseur nor a food/foodie connoisseur of any thing for that matter. All I know that for my tastebuds the burrito was amazing and the salsa just right to complement the home made tortilla chips. The burrito had beans and rice, onions and cilantro in it — just the right combination of flavors. So, yes, I did enjoy every bite and taste of goat meat. The room got kind of warm for me due to no A/C on a hot, muggy summer day — the heat inside was dry but a few degrees higher than the mid 80s outside as a result on the convection heat from the kitchen. I decided I needed to move on to a cooler place, such as my car’s A/C on this super, muggy summer day. On my way out I asked for my taco to be wrapped to go and the cook asked if I wanted more red salsa and I obliged. I then asked him if Tlaquepaque was the place of «El Parian» and he affirmed, as well as volunteered the fact that the owners also had a birria place there — he adviced I take a biz card, which I did. By the way, the taco was between just ok to amazing(generous portion of birria), as well. I think the burrito is plenty both to enjoy the flavor of goat/birria and to satisfy any hungry appetite. Hands down the food and service are five stars. This place is at the corner of Rush & Tyler. Paid cash & intended to do so — not aware of coupons read on other reviews. You pay on the way out. By the way, Birria is a delicatessen and pricey by definition — prices at this place are at par with, for instance, Don Chente’s near Mariachi Plaza on 1st Street in Boyle Heights. Birria shops in Jalisco are known for their idiosyncrasy. You are at the mercy of the owners there to let you into this treat. I’m not a masochist and have a low tolerance for sub-par service where Dollar is king; but, just mention this to reflect on the fact this deli has a cult-like experience to it — could it be from the Macho culture of the bullfighter? For reference, a tradition in Guadalajara, Jalisco(Nine Corners — 9 esquinas — literally an intersection with nine corners — imagine!) is that birria is sold until they run out which is about in a few hours and most places are closed by 1 p.m. And, yes, owners have an attitude and do eat their own treat at the end of the day there, while still wearing a white apron reflecting a day-long duty. Other places around town here in SoCal only have it on weekends or until batches run out. Not here, birria is available all day, every day; it seems. So, something to consider that YOU will for sure get some birria if you are craving it, as I was for lunch today. I can say that burrito and taco at this place are a GREAT value for birria!

Awesome Birria and great service! Came here on a Sunday after reading Unilocal reviews because we were looking for tacos de Birria. Though we didn’t end up eating that, their Birria plates are to die for! We were promptly served chips and bean dip. We each ordered a Birria plate plus rice and beans And the food came out so quickly. Great tortillas too! Definitely our new go-to spot

I had a $ 20 voucher from Groupon and tried to redeem it today since today was my first time here 1. The cashier told me the offer is for dine in, not for to go, I asked the manager if he could make an exception because I purchased it without realizing it was for dine in, manager told me policy is policy and he could not change it, I then gave up saying I will eat it here myself and take the left over home. 2. He then told me the offer it is for a family to dine in not for individual. 3. He further stated even I dined in, the left over could not take home because dine in means everything needed to be finished here and I have no right to take it outside this restaurant. I left disappointed, I read the policy on groupon, it does mention it is for dine in, but did not mention individual could not dine in and left over could not take home. This is not BUFFET! By promoting this kind of business on Groupon is just ruining Groupon’s reputation. I wasted my gas and energy to redeem this offer and manager ended up losing one potential customer. By reading comments on Unilocal.com I knew I was not the only one to have same experience. Obviously manager tried to promote business via Groupon, Amazon local and living social, however the way how he handles business is not acceptable. The store manager sent me message to apologize via Unilocal two days later for the situation happened that day and invited me back. I am not going back to this restaurant however I decide to change my review from one star to three stars simply because manager was sincerely enough and I do hope he can run business differently and get more customers.

The food is good but their portions along with their prices do not match, It’s pricey. The place is an ok place, nothing fancy. It’s says grand opening but the place doesn’t look new. Overall, the food was good and service was also good, let’s not forget the tortillas.

this is not birria the meat is to thick is not tender like its suppose to. I mean if you never tasted real birria and think this is it, then yeah its birria!!! the meat is dry to the taste. First time here and my last. I wouldn’t recommend this place for people that want that real taste of homemade birria.

I am very picky about my birria, but this place has the perfect recipe for it. Its the best birria i’ve had in years, and to add on it is served with deliscious homemade tortillas. They even have Tepache! which is a traditional mexican drink based on fermented pineapple, you got to have an exquisite palate to enjoy it. I also tried the«jericallas» another traditional mexican dessert, i compare it with crème brulé, has kinda the same texture, very good. Got to mention service is really good, the staff is always very attentive and friendly, prices are fair enough. Me and my family really enjoyed coming to this place. Keep up the good work Birrieria Tlaquepaque!!!

The birria de chivo here comes in a bowl of watery liquid. The goat meat actually tasted decent. It’s too bad some of the other things made my dining experience rather forgettable though. First, there is no ventilation of any kind here! I came on a hot 90-something degree weather and it was unbearable. Had to grab one of those take-one-free Mexican magazines to fan myself. Besides the sweat inducing indoor temps, there were flies all over the place and between the fanning and the fly-swatting, it was hard to concentrate on the food! I was really pissed off about the chopped up cilantro we were given. The cilantro was so old that they were all dry and totally discolored. They were yellow and brown and I couldn’t convince myself to even use it. Oh, and their jamaica was the worst I’ve been served in a Mexican joint. It was disgusting! I can’t say it’s worth going through all that for their birria…

Will never step foot in the place again! Went there this past Friday around 7ish with my Amazon Local Voucher. There was no patron in the restaurant, only a cashier and the owner. We started to order and informed the cashier that we had this voucher. The owner came out and said he’s not honoring any vouchers using a lame excuse that there has been fraud with vouchers. We could’ve easily stayed there to eat, but I refused to give this guy our business. I wonder how he stay in business because there was not a single person in the restaurant. It was empty… that tell you something about the restaurant, especially if the owner is the one driving the customer away.

Very authentic and tasty food. A bit pricey for this area. Came here like many people, to use a LivingSocial voucher. Ordered an asada burrito with rice and beans, good size and good value for $ 4.95. Order 3 tacos for $ 4.35, street style tacos with onions and cilantro, they were very tiny. Probably will not order that again. Also got a small beef soup for $ 12 to go, $ 9 for dine-in, very tasty, nice flavors and full of beef, a decent deal for what we got. I had no problems using the voucher except that I was told it was for dine-in only. I did really like the green salsa and definitely poured that all over the burrito. yum. Probably will only get the burrito next time and skip the other two things.

I went with a Living Social voucher. We were the only customers there and when we sat down I told the waitress we had a voucher. She asked if we had a reservation! She stated that in order to use the voucher we needed a reservation. I told her first of all, we are the only customers here. I informed her that if they did not honor the living Social voucher that I was leaving and I would report them up Living Social and request a refund. She went to the back to talk to the cook and returned and said ok you can use it. I ordered a large Birria. The flavor was good but it was not the best cuts of meat. The homemade tortillas were good. Hubby ordered a burrito of carne asada and he didn’t like it. Same thing, cheap cuts of meat and not flavored at all. If I didn’t have the voucher for $ 20, which covered most of our bill. I would have been even more disappointed. I will NOT be returning here!
