I was in the area and stopped in for lunch. Ordered patty melt with french fries. Burger was cooked just the way i ordered it and fries were average greasy spoon fries. I suggest sitting on the side of restaurant they call«the roost». The reason being is that i have been in this place twice and sat on the old side in front booths and was basically ignored for 15 minutes before a waitress came over. I would probably stop in if in area but would definitely not make a special trip here. I would hope that the waitress would at least smile next time or the tip i leave will definitely reflect on this.

This is a nice atmosphere for breakfast or lunch. Staff is very friendly and the food is tasty. I had the garden omelet with corn beef hash, toast and coffee. My boyfriend had the cheeseburger and fries.

We live a short walk from this place and it has served us well over the last couple of years. Its nothing fancy at all, but cheap, and the food is consistently pretty good. We love the build-your-own breakfast sandwiches, we always get them on the Portuguese rolls and try them with different meat & cheese, as well as the egg. We also loved getting grilled muffins with butter. The coffee isn’t amazing(we generally like really good, local coffee) but it’s certainly not the worst I’ve had at a breakfast joint. Perfect for a low key breakfast :)

It’s a good place for a cheap breakfast. The food can be a bit greasy, and sometimes the home fries are a little over cooked. Yes, there are better places out there to eat, but you’ll most likely pay more and won’t get the fast and friendly service the Egg & I provides. The one thing I did love about it is that it definitely has that small town/home town feel to it. You’ll find mostly locals in there talking amongst themselves about any and everything.

When you first come into the restaurant, there’s a bit or a quirkiness. It’s kind of a dive-y type of place. The Roost is connected to the restaurant. You sit yourself wherever you want. The food is great although you kind of wish they had a bit more variety. The service however is fantastic and friendly. It’s exactly what you expect it to be. A welcoming place.

Pretty good for a cheap breakfast. It serves the standard at lower than average prices. The locals come here so it’s clearly a staple here in south hadley.

I love this place. Great local spot with quality breakfast and generous portions. Very afforable. Everything you’d want and expect from a local restaurant. My wife and I have been several times for breakfast and have yet to be disappointed. Friendly, fast service I Highly recommend this place.

I want to love this place more than I can, it is a little hit or miss sometimes. The service and staff are generally great — unless you’re there too close to closing then you get the very distinct sense that you get what they give and should just deal with it. Food is pretty good, with some misses. The pancakes are not good even though I’ve given them multiple chances. Other breakfast fare is good but pretty standard. Specials are a decent deal and the scram dishes they do are good. Generally good prices and generous portions.

One of my favorite things to do is invade another town’s local breakfast dive, order a standard«breakfast special» which always includes eggs, toast, bacon, potato… and sit back and observe the interactions between the staff and locals coming in for morning caffeine infusions while taking liberal advantage of my own infinite coffee refills. This place fuels my interest nicely. The real joy here is the people who come in and the people who work here… they’re real townies and everyone seems to know everyone else by first name. It’s a local dive in an old brick building that hasn’t had a thought regarding its interior since the 70’s…and I love it, right down to the funky banana-colored swivel seats at the bar. The nitty-gritty of it? The food passes. A «breakfast special» is my measuring stick for places like this and they make one that comes out fast and hot just fine. Prices are cheap too. For two people I got out of here for $ 15, including tip. I’ll return for more people watching next time I’m in the area during breakfast hours.

Not really what I was expecting based on the reviews. The service was nice but the food wasn’t nearly as good as I had hoped.

I really wanted to like this place, but they really need to use fresher ingredients. First the good: I would give them 4 stars on service and price. They’re good for families and large groups and there was no wait on a Sunday between 10&11. The place was cute and charming. The trivial pursuit on the table was a nice touch. The bad: Too bad all the trivial pursuit questions were written before I was born and every answer was Paul Newman. I would have to give them 1 star on their food. I had scrambled eggs, home fries and hash browns. Everything tastes like it had been frozen(i.e. freezer burn). I couldn’t get through my meal. Maybe the pancakes and waffles would be better. I love to support local businesses, but next time I’ll stick with Denny’s.

I have come here a couple of times for a quick and inexpensive breakfast. The staff is very friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is definitely a diner-style, sparse in décor, and is much larger inside than the outside appearance would have you believe. We had to park in the public lot across the street which was absolutely fine and convenient enough. The prices are extremely reasonable and typical of a diner fare. The breakfast potato option allows you to choose between home-fried potatoes and the hashbrown(shredded) style which is nice for those who prefer one over the other. The bacon was just«ok». Had a chewy, rubbery texture and very fatty. I prefer my bacon more on the crispy side but next time I will have to request that and see if there is improvement. The garden vegetable omelet was packed to my liking with a variety of fresh veggies and there was an appropriate amount of cheese. For my first, I was satisfied with my eggs, however this last time, the egg was soooooo, paper thin that it had no taste and barely held the veggies inside. So thin that I was unable to stab my fork into them to pick up. Overall, I left feeling satisfied and full. I will definitely go there again for the good prices and friendly service, with some slight modifications to my order that will hopefully enhance the enjoyment of my food order.

The food here is good, I would definitely eat here if I am ever in this area again. And the pancakes are ginormous, a short stack is more than enough.

I love the Egg and I, and it’s not because the food is blow your mind out of this world — though it is good. This is the perfect little place to walk across the street from mass and hang out with the other folks of South Hadley. It’s like a little step back in time. I do love the eggs, though.

Just had a nice breakfast here with my honey. She ordered the cranberry pancake special, and it was delightful. Besides that, the Egg and I is really nothing special, just your typical diner… it’s inexpensive and not fancy. The coffee is a tad below passably mediocre. If you’re looking for a nice coffee experience, this is NOT your place. If you’re looking for a cheap and quick breakfast out, this IS your place. There’s parking on the street, and a public lot right across the street if street parking is filled. Convenient to both South Hadley and Holyoke; it’s right over the lower bridge with Holyoke.

A sparsely decorated breakfast place that will give you a fair price for your morning dollar… eggs, bacon, toast and passable coffee… pretty out of the way unless you’re in South Hadley for some reason or another… but if you are and you’re hungry for diner food, stop by here…
