I love this little sushi restaurant! They are temporarily closed and are moving down the street to the opposite side of Morris Avenue. The owner said they’ll be open in July sometime.

Great sushi, much tastier and fresher than other places in the area. A friendly reasonably priced local place with quality food that’s worth supporting– we will be back. Very sweet, friendly and thoughtful owners– they cut the rolls into an even number of pieces when they realized the kids were sharing. Lots of options for cooked rolls for the kids including a nice bulgogi roll. They have many interesting and unique rolls; try Snow White, which uses fresh/not imitation crab and is topped with thin slices of cooked fish, fish roe and a nice sauce. Agree that the space is tired though the building was sold and they are relocating to a new space a block away(I think # 245 Morris Ave) in July/August and may be closed briefly during the transition so call ahead to check. Put this one on your short list!

The sushi here is really good. It was fresh and tasty! I really like how their spicy rolls aren’t caked with mayo and panko, but mostly fish! The bulgogi bowl was ok, bulgogi had good flavor but just came with rice and a lot of lettuce, would have been good with more veggies and an egg. I’d love to see them have a couple more korean options on their menu. Service is slow, so don’t go in a rush and you’ll enjoy yourself. Also, prices are reasonable. Looking forward to going back.

Love the sushi. Best in town. Owned by a husband and wife, the only two employees. Big fan of the family owned places. Anyway the sushi is very fresh. The ambiance is very nice and cozy and although a bit small, still warm and welcoming. I had the spicy crab salad appetizer, 2 salmon avocado rolls, and the mt. Fuji roll. Everything was delicious, definitely coming back

Tried this place for the first time tonight. Definitely has a «hole in the wall» vibe but don’t judge based on that. The couple who owns it is very friendly and the service was great. The food was even better! Gyoza was fresh and piping hot. Sushi was great too, the woman even cut the tails off my shrimp tempura roll as per request. Boyfriend got the miso ramen that was hot and very good as well. This place definitely deserves all 5 stars!

A decent sushi, service, and ambiance. It is definitely a place where you have some consistency in food, and you can count on at least average quality. Is it Manhattan standards? No. But it is solid enough to have when you are in the area

I have been passing by this restaurant for two years and decided to finally walk in and try it. The service was quick and they were attentive. I had the lunch special pick 2 rolls and was excellent. The only draw back is the selection of rolls for the special. It was somewhat limited so I ended up ordering a separate roll at regular price. But all in all the experience was good and I will be willing to return.

I really hate giving this place only two stars but based on service and food, that’s about it. The Korean couple that own this place are sweet and mean well but this place is not run well. 1. The husband does all the sushi prep and the wife does everything else; cooks, serves, cleans, does the dishes, buses tables. This is not sustainable, though he have been doing it for 3 years. 2. Because of the above, we waited forever for our food, even had to get our own menus. We had to ask for a cork screw 3 times because she kept forgetting because she was waiting on too many tables. 3. I’ve never seen a restaurant that actually turned away business. Soon after we came in a family of four came in and there were no tables to accommodate them. There’s only 5 tables in the whole place and only 3 hold four, the others two. The sushi bar sits 3, the other side of the bar is walled up, it was weird. If I weren’t there with my family, I would have just helped out and waited on tables. My heart broke when I saw this. Folks were waiting to pay, others wanted take out and tables wanted water, menus, etc. And this poor woman is doing it all. I wanted to give them some advice about service, hiring someone to help, updating the décor, etc. Maybe I’ll go back and offer some help, I want them to succeed. But let’s get to the food. I ordered bulgoki rice, which is seasoned shaved beef over rice and leafy greens. The meat was seasoned well but to pay $ 13 for a bowl of rice, a few bits of lettuce and a tiny serving of meat is not worth it. The unagi tasted old, not necessary bad, just old. Like it’s been sitting around too long after it was cooked. The other sushi dishes were just okay. Of all the hole in wall places I’ve been to, this one is definitely the easiest to make better. Since they’ve been here 3 years, people seem to support it despite the service and it’s the only Korean place around here. I think I’ll go back this week and offer some advice and help. But I have a feeling these guys are pretty much set in their ways and if it ain’t broke,…

I have to give it two stars even though the couple there was very nice. Pros: Sweet people work there Raw fish not bad vs. Other challenges we had Cons: –Soy sauce old and bitter. Tried soy sauce from another table and same thing –Rice: One of the rolls had to be re-done bc rice was old and hard on that one –Veggie roll with ginger on top– expensive and not worth it at all –Salmon skin roll– skin was too crunchy and dry(old?) and not tasty

A great little husband and wife spot! The sushi and appetizer we ate were amazing. The crab mini mini and spicy seaweed with salmon had a little kick but were great. I especially enjoyed the kamikaze roll.

Stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night. Small restaurant with a few tables and counter seating. We ordered a bunch of rolls which were really tasty. Recommend the June roll with mango, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura and the spicy tuna roll wrapped with tuna and avocado and jalapeños on top. The special rolls range from around 9 – 13, which is okay since the fish is fresh and portions aren’t too small. 3 special rolls and 2 regular rolls plus 2 miso soups came out to $ 50 for 2 people. Lunch specials are available on weekdays. Menu has mostly Japanese items, but some Korean things are available. Service is great. The couple running the restaurant is very friendly and check up on you to see if you have everything you need. Definitely recommend.

This is a really nice local sushi restaurant in downtown Springfield. Nice selections and staff. Smooth jazz lets you mellow out. We just introduced the owners to Unilocal. My daughter liked the mochi ice cream and the tiny forks that come with it.

Among all the sushi places I’ve eaten in Millburn, Maplewood, Springfield, and South Orange, this is the best one. The ingredients are a notch up from other sushi places. Ie, I found the tuna sushi to be of much better grade and tastier. Even something as minor like the miso soup is miles away from others. I had a sushi deluxe order(7 sushi pcs and tuna roll) plus a yellow tail sushi order. definitely will come back. As bonus the couple, owners of restaurant, are extremely friendly and offer great service.

Good for take out but the place is a hole in the wall. They have so really good deals on rolls and food is of good quality.

Came here more often a few years ago, but I went back the other day for a snack and had 2 rolls. The spicy tuna and eel avocado was fresh. Can’t complain. Simple sushi spot in Springfield.

Service: The owners are absolutely delightful. You can just tell that they’re polite and nice by nature. First time– I ordered take out. Since I couldn’t find a menu online, I asked the lady a lot of questions over the phone. Usually, people get annoyed and rush me through my order, but the lady at Hinari was the complete opposite, willing to help me out with my selections. The second time around I also ordered take out. The lady remembered me and when I arrived to pick up, she struck up a conversation with me. Food: Blugogi Rice is delicious! Authentic and nicely portioned. Comes with gocujang hot sauce and wild greens MmMMM. Their miso soup is one of the best I’ve had from all restaurants I’ve been to. I’m from California — San Francisco and San Deigo and have had a decent amount of miso soup in life. I’m pregnant so I couldn’t taste their raw sushi, but their cooked rolls are delicious too and best of all, decently priced. I ordered their volcano roll, tempura roll(added avocado and mango) and baked roll. I will be def be back for more!

This is my second time here and it’s a great place. Sushi and the sashimi is always fresh and when I tried new things I loved it. Today we tried two appetizers. First was the spicy crab mini me and the tuna spicy salad. Ordered the sushi/sashimi special. I’m glad this place is near my house! Now I can call this my special sushi place

The new ownership has had a huge impact upon Hinari. When the original owners first opened the sushi was poorly prepared and noticeably not fresh. Now quality and friendly service are building a good local reputation, which is good to see. There is nothing noteworthy about Hinari’s prices(neither high, nor low) or selection, but what they offer is worth trying.
