My hero zero on a Thursday night with a monkey boy in my hand. Nothing can beat that memory. It is always super crowded so be comfortable being in a tight space but fun night! Go for the drink specials.

Hands down the worst bar in downtown State College. The service is completely unprofessional. They will allow underage kids, yet will«unexplainably» NOT allow people of legal age. The bouncers and manager are absolutely the rudest people I have ever met in my life. The drinks are horrible, overpriced, and washed down with water. Not to mention, the music always sucks. Do not waste your time or money here.

The food was simply not good. We had an undercooked burger(supposed to be medium, looked like steak tartar; uncooked), a jumbo grilled cheese that had one slice of cheese(we sent both of those back) and found a potato chip in my salad. They were also totally understaffed so the service was terrible. We’d been here once before and it wasn’t likebthis, but with all the nearby options there’s no way we’d come back here.

This is my favorite bar is State College. They have great drink specials, live music, and the bartenders are really friendly. You can shoot pool or just hang out with some drinks. Thursday nights are definitely the best through. My hero zero and $ 5 monkey boys(pitchers of alcohol and sugar) definitely help everyone to have a fun time.

It smells like someone mopped the floor with fecal matter. Why. I’m appalled and I can’t even imagine ordering food from this place… because apparently you can. I would not recommend this bar for anyone who has a sense of smell or who is sober enough to remember they have one. Gross.

The saloon is fun, the bands are good and monkey boys are awesome, but I just can’t justify giving any more than two stars to a place that employs such a rude staff. I’ve been there before and I’ll be there again and I’ll enjoy myself, but I’ve learn to expect extremely rude bartenders and bouncers. I once asked a bar back for a water– something you really shouldn’t bother a bartender for– and you would have thought I asked him to climb Mount Everest. I also once saw a bartender walk through the crowd on the dance-floor loudly saying«get out of my way». There wasn’t even a fight or anything urgent, he was just walking across the dance floor. In short, it’s a fun place but don’t expect good service. This is one of the only places where I don’t tip well, and as a waiter who has bad days himself that’s saying a lot.

The bouncers follow the rule«squeeqie wheel gets the oill» not who harassed who. Three degrees military veteran 30 year old who was harassed by a 21 year old. They threatened to kick me out, not him. Ummm

Where do I begin… so disappointed in the saloon bartenders… this is a bar that we, as older patrons have been coming to for many years… terrible service, no eye contact… like we didn’t exist…

this bar discriminates against women. they would not let me in because my license was brand new and I was a woman. They let my guy best friend in with a newer license than me literally 5 minutes after. They are sexist and the managers even implyed to my face he won’t let me in because I have a new license and because i’m a woman.

Famous for their monkey boys. They seem to be pretty variable in alcohol content, as several others have mentioned. However, never open a tab here. They frequently have overcharged me, which I assume is some sort of unwritten policy assuming you’ll be to drunk to realize it. They at least took off the charge the last time when I complained(charging me full price when I ordered my last drink 10 minutes before the end of happy hour), but that hasn’t always happened.

This place is all about the live music! Because there is not much else to like here! They always have great bands! Always great talent! HOWEVER… the monkey boy drinks? Are pretty much non-alchoholic fruit drinks. I mean really they are huge and there must be one shot in there. It is not really worth it. AND I really think they try to stuff as many people in their as possible so people would be forced to leave, and new people can come in and give their cover charge. I mean that place was packed and it was so freaking hot people had to leave, it became not worth it!

So, the Saloon website describes this place as: Music, Monkey Boys, and more. … just a damn good bar. I must agree with this. People definitely go here for the music and the Monkey Boys. When I went I tried the infamous Bong Water Monkey Boy – a pitcher full of whatever is in the fist-full of bottles the bar tender is holding mixed with some delicious things and topped off with a straw for convenience. When on special, the Monkey Boys will only run you $ 5, thank you college town!

I was here one night, so obviously this is not a comprehensive review. Actually it really is just based off of how awesome it was to drink Bong Water and not spend a ton of cash. Living in a big city makes you really enjoy when you are in a college town and you can afford drinks. Bong Water is some heavenly concoction created by the bar staff that is served in a big olé itcher. It tastes great, gets the job done, and it tastes great. The ambience here is nice, there was a band playing when I went. They did a good job so that counts for them! Girls were definitely not the prettiest you find in State College, but the drinks are good here and they have other good specials. A good place to go to party.

Down some really slippery stairs… into a dark, basement-like space that smells like pee, sweat and regret… is the Saloon. Whythefuckareyouhere? MONKEYBOYS. Read: Pitcher of liquor(five-six unidentified bottles are dumped into a pitcher), ice and cherries and topped with schnapps/flavoring of your desired flavor. They’re like $ 5 when half price(full price is $ 12, which used to freak me out… but I go by Manhattan standards now.) FIVEDOLLARSFOR A BUCKETOFBOOZE. THATYOUDRINKWITH A STRAW.(I pioneered the«straw in a pitcher of beer» by the way. This apparently is not an acceptable practice anywhere outside of State College though.) They have live music too. We’ll be back for homecoming, because I plan to hit all our old haunts. And at my old age of 23, that will take all four days.

We were visiting from out of town for a wedding and The Saloon was our after-reception destination. The staff was very polite, which I can imagine gets difficult in a college town bar. $ 5 domestic pitchers, even on a Saturday. The band was good, and the cover was only $ 3.

Most overrated bar in State College. Everyone loves this place and I have no idea why. They never seem to have any mindblowing specials. I’ve been there a few times and it was just packed to the brim, hard to move around. There’s no real place to sit, there’s the bar, I think about 3 or 4 booths and maybe 8 – 10 stools around the pool table(that has a wooden board over it). Maybe I’m just a cynic. I don’t the big deal of this place. It’s still possible to have fun with your friends, but I’d rather go elsewhere.

I really did not like the Saloon at first. It’s just not my typical kind of place. its soo laid back, no real dress code, bands that cover a bunch of classic rock, etc. But then I experienced its charm. And a monkey boy or two… and southern comfort with cranberry and lime. OMG, thank you Saloon!!! Monkey Boys really are famous at Penn State with good reason… they are like every different clear alcohol with some flavors and then a spritz of sprite or something in a big pitcher. They will put cherries and a straw in. Try Bong Water. YUM. People are nice and everyone always seems to have fun. Its the kind of place you could wear uggs and a sweatshirt to and not be looked at funny.(not that I would.) ;-) Usually a cover charge. Always a live band. Sun Night and Thurs Night $ 5 monkey boys instead of $ 12.

The atmosphere makes it very easy and fun to get real drunk. When they have half-off monkey boys it is so hard to resist. Has a pool table, a ok amount of seating, and if you’re smart enough to go when it’s not crowded… well it is just a good time. The bands that play there are definitely some of the best in state college bars. Overall a lot of fun especially for your 21st. Can get pricey. It is VERY easy to spend a LOT of money here. And WOW, having two monkey boys is a LOT of sugar! Of course it has the issue of being so crowded some nights, especially considering there is often $ 5 cover sometimes.

The Saloon has been around since 1976, and it’s obvious why: it’s an unpretentious spot, and everything’s cheap. Their web site states the place is made to resemble a «turn of the century English pub», but it looks like a plain-Jane saloon to me. I’ve been here many times. The live entertainment is usually pretty good, with decent cover bands, and solo performers too. Arrive early to avoid the crowd, and to score seating. The Saloon has many beers on tap, and are famous for their«Monkey Boy», a large pitcher of delicious drink. At $ 2 a shot, this venue is the epitome of cost-effective drinking, though I’m sure there are plenty of students racking up crazy credit card bills.(Heck, I know I’d be if I wasn’t just visiting!) On my last visit here, bartender Bean got us Jim Morrison shots(with root beer!), and Royal Caribbean shots — both were pure money. Recommended. The Saloon is open everyday from 8PM to 2AM.
