This place is going no to now be our GO-​TO place for eye exams & eyewear.
My husband got his reminder from his insurance for his eye exam & new glasses, also around the same time needed the DMV exam done. We were looking around the area we live for a new place to go, he mentioned having gone to Cohens in the plaza across the street from here (by stop & shop, this one is by Kmart) & had such awful service he didn’t return & his mother cancelled her glasses after a lot of unnecessary issues there — I see the reviews on here for there are terrible & that it seems common practice for them to treat their customers poorly — so I said NO way are we going there for a second chance. Not even almost, I don’t care how close it is.
THEN, thanks to Unilocal,I found this hidden gem! This place is fabulous! Immediately walking in you see how open & nice it is, not some cramped little bodega or pawn shop feeling place with too many dusty cases crammed in, this place has a HUGE selection & it is laid out very nicely. It’s very bright, clean & well decorated, all the cases are immaculate, organized, & well lit. They even have a little kids corner with a table & chairs in the back corner — fabulous if you need to bring your minion (s) along.
We stopped in here just to check it out & we’re very politely greeted walking in the door, the optometrist wasn’t in that day (I forgot what days they say the dr is there — call first) but right away looked to schedule an appointment (a couple days later when hubby was off work) & I was so glad we stopped in. Did I mention the selection was huge?
Anyway, my Husband went for his exam, got all his forms filled out, glasses ordered with all the extras he wanted (special lens, coating, anti glare, etc etc) & was back home within 40 mins to head to the DMV. He said it was such a breeze, he put it off until like a week before his license was going to expire because he was dreading going, he got home & said well, if I knew it would be that easy & stress free, I would’ve gone sooner.
I was nervous he picked out glasses without me, he picked them up a couple weeks later (even though they called that they were ready a few days later, his work schedule is crazy) so I had to wait forever to see them, but I must say, they gave him good advice — his new glasses are nice, fit his face from every perspective & are a nice, new, modern look. I approve!!! Thanks guys!!!
When I need to change my glasses (I don’t wear them all day or even every day) I will definitely be making an appointment here without a second thought.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS
Groupon rate of $ 55.00 for eye exam and 3 month supply of contacts was advertised. I called the store to make an appt prior to purchasing and store rep said they will honor the groupon rate. I told them I wear acuvue brand and the owner said the contacts showing on groupon rate is for «Sterling Brand contacts.» I told him I wear acuvue but I will try it since it’s included with the promotion. After the eye exam, the doc told me Sterling contacts are only one diameter size and it doesn’t fit with my eyes. So at this point, I need to pay $ 95 for ANOTHER eye exam specifically for Acuvue that I have been wearing forever.
At this point, I just told her to give me my prescription for the exam she fitted me for and she refused. The owner then told me she will just write the script to take with me when I make the payment for $ 55 (without the sterling brand contacts). As soon as he charged my card for $ 55, the doc said «I cannot write you any script and I cannot authorize the sterling brand either. But if you pay $ 95, I will fit you for acuvue.
At the end of the day, the only thing the owner gave me was a piece of paper showing my eyesight and told me that’s a legitimate prescription.
$ 55 later, I have no contacts and no prescription to go elsewhere.
I just realized this is the reason the store didn’t want me to purchase through groupon and I can’t even get the money back from them.
** WHEN THE OWNER, DOC refuses to provide their names, they CANNOT BE TRUSTED**

I recently bought a Groupon for a contacts fitting exam with 3 months worth of contacts included (but note, patients with astigmatism will receive none of this benefit). After calling, making an appointment and showing up, I was instantly prompted to purchase the contacts through their group. In addition, you had to purchase a minimum from them in order to get your written prescription from the exam. I’m not a first time contacts-​wearer and I never had to do this with my first optometrist. This company’s prices were also much higher than those you find at online retailers. They tried to charge me more than double online retailers for a single box and then fluctuated their price range minimally when I was hesitant.) I left, and proceeded to return the Groupon. The only reason I tried this place out was because my primary eye doctor did not offer the fitting service anymore and the Groupon offer caught my eye — I never would have otherwise. Word of caution, try to find another place that doesn’t try to pull a fast one over your eyes!
Edit: I called them up saying that requiring a consumer to purchase through the group was not allowed and that a prescription was required to be given to consumers/​patients after an exam, and they basically responded by saying «store policy» and denied my services entirely. Greed is deceptive — beware!

I purchased a Groupon for Sterling Optical which covered an eye exam and 3 months supply of contact lenses. The doctor who performed my exam was friendly and professional and the counter staff was very good at up-​selling the Groupon. By the end of my visit I had paid full price for a six month supply of my contact lenses plus a $ 10 shipping charge. Typical optical shop experience… not the best and not the worst…

Don’t let the name of the franchise fool you.
The Sterling Optical in Hylan Plaza has a very homely feel to it. The employees are patient and friendly. The doctor was exceptional from start to finish and was knowledgable with every question that I had.
It took less than 10 minutes from the time I set foot in the door to the final transaction, yet I felt the exam was thorough and handled with expertise.

I had a great experience here. Sales people don’t try to «up sell» you and the doctor was very competent.
