Stopped in there for a morning breakfast with my mother. Nice atmosphere, could have probably been a little brighter, sorry I like to see my food when I’m eating. Coffee kept coming, the breakfast was large, lots of options for sides, and breads and toppings etc. So many options to choose from that it was overwhelming but in a good way. Would probably head back there for some lunch and dinner as prices where reasonable and atmosphere was perfect for an early morning. Thanks.

Great first experience at the Plaid Turnip! Party of 6 including all ages; three generations. All were elated with food. Service was good as well. Will definitely make a return trip.

Had dinner here last night on the recommendation of the front desk guy at the Hilton Garden Inn. What a hidden gem. My husband had grilled pork chops with baked sweet potato and garden salad. I had the broiled flounder and crab cake. My sides were a baked potato with the house salad. The salads were fresh and huge. Everything was delicious. Topped dinner off with their $ 15.00 bottle of Pinot. It was really good. Definitely would go back if we were in the area.

So far no good… no lemonade, no pulled pork, no crab cakes. My wife and i ordered this stuff and they were out. So we got hot dogs…

We had reservations for 6 and we arrived right on time. Our table was not ready. We waited 10 minutes and were then seated. The restaurant dos not have enough menus for us all to have one and there was no clear reason. Wait staff was friendly but were not moving with any speed or urgency. We asked for waters and a beer and 10 minutes later still had neither drinks nor menus. We decided to leave but asked to see a manager first. We were told that the manager would be available in a few minutes. We left. Cmon Plaid Turnip. Your business is to sell food and you can’t do that if you don’t have menus or make your guest feel welcome.

We found this quaint little gem downtown after a day out with our little one. We were starving and wanted some lunch. There was not a wait time and we sat promptly. A Christmas tree was the focal point of the dining room. They also had string lights hung. I ordered the crab cake sandwich on a croissant with lettuce and tomato. It was very good especially broiled. Their french fries were a bit over fried but it did the trick. My son had the kids’ macaroni and cheese and applesauce. The macaroni was just a bowl of penne with some cheese in it. He didn’t care for it at all. My husband ordered the fried founder sandwich. Amazing! perfectly fried. and did I mention it was a whole filet? Wonderful! Our server was very attentive and friendly. It did take about 25 minutes for the food to come but all in all, it was worth it!

When you call a week in advance for Mothers Day reservations, they say they aren’t taking any reservations for that day. When you show up on Mothers a Day, they are taking reservations and if you don’t already have a reservation, there is a 2 hour wait. Of course this was explained to us by a very rude hostess. Get it together, Plaid Turnip. You’ve lost our business.

First impression of a restaurant is always the host(ess), right? Well, the host(ess) here was SOOOOO quiet. Speak up a little, DANG!!! She walked back to our table to seat us and we weren’t sure whether we were supposed to follow her or not… I mean, she could have said something simple like«follow me». Anyway… Pretty cute little restaurant situated on Main Street in downtown Suffolk. The breakfast menu is pretty nice with different omelettes, steak & eggs, biscuits & gravy… etc. I chose the steak & eggs… medium rare on the steak. I didn’t think it was going to come out cooked that way, but I was hopeful. It came out a little more than medium, but it was still ok. Here’s the great part of this review. On the menu they have something called the«Atomic Bomb-let». Its 12 eggs, a ton of different meat, different cheeses, veggies… side of potatoes, toast. Well, my BF decided he wanted this all for himself. The waited said… «OMG» I snorted. While waiting for the order we discussed how many chefs it would take to flip said omelette. The omelette came out and everyone around us stared. I snorted again. It looked really good and it was HUGE. Sadly, or perhaps fortumately, the BF only ate less than 1⁄3. I got to eat some later that day ;)

Cute place! I stopped in for lunch today while in town. Its right off Main Street downtown and 2 hour street parking was available. When I arrived, there was a bit of a crowd so it took a few minutes to get seated. I looked over the lunch menu which consists of a lot of salad and sandwich options and chose the pulled pork platter which came with 2 sides. The food arrived quickly which is great when you have limited time at lunch. Generous portions and the price is reasonable. Total for food and some tea was $ 11. The décor could use some improvements. I noticed a bunch of lightbulbs missing/burned out and there are still Christmas string lights hanging for some reason in March. Also the dining room seems gigantic because there are only booths on each side of the room with no tables in the center. Eclectic is definitely the vibe, and there are some cool paintings on the wall so it is a cute place.

This was my first visit for lunch after seeing some good reviews here on Unilocal. The customer service was excellent. The food came out quickly, was fresh and presented nicely. They give you large portions everyone had food left over. The blackened chicken Caesar salad is what I had and was delicious. Will definitely come back.

We each had a patty melt and home made chips very good. Our server was s very nice young man. He was prompt and always seemed to be one step ahead of our needs. There were very tempting looking cupcakes in the display case but we were too full to try them.

It was 2 stars before we even got our food, so it didn’t get better. Went for brunch-they were out of eggs. Not«we sent someone for eggs, so it’ll be a delay!», just«we’re out of eggs.» We were wondering what was going on, since we only got the regular sandwich menu & not the brunch menu.(I have no idea what non-egg dishes were available because we never saw the brunch menu.) So our choices were limited to begin with… I saw the fried green tomatoes mentioned on Unilocal & asked if we could order those for an app since they weren’t on our menu. They weren’t bad-nothing to write home about. We ordered a chicken salad & a BBQ sandwich-both of which are pretty quick to prepare. 45 minutes later, we got our sandwiches. Definitely not worth a 45 min wait. After we ordered, we heard that eggs were on the way. A bit annoying, since we drove a half hour here just for the brunch. Our waitress was very nice, but this place was a mess. The manager(owner?) was ‘intervening’ with the hostess & moving tables around, which caused a whole ‘nother mess of problems altogether. I could hear the kitchen staff and waitstaff complaining among themselves. The décor was schizophrenic-every color under the sun(but no plaid, natch). Def do not recommend. If I’m driving 30 min for brunch, I’m going somewhere else.

I love going to breakfast or dinner at the plaid turnip! Cute little artsy — café esq in downtown suffolk. Great portions for good prices. The only downside is the wait time for your meal but i would rather wait to receive real/good food than fast/crappy food. I typically order omelets for breakfast but the stuffed french toast and waffles are heavenly. As for dinner, I enjoy their burgers, sandwiches, and the smothered chicken. They also have great bbq and brisket. The only complaint I have for anything I have ate there would be extremely small portions for their seafood, for the price… but maybe things have changed. It still tasted great though! Desert is another area where the plaid turnip shines. If you have room for a cupcake, treat yourself to one or buy one to take home… you won’t reqret it!

I liked the atmosphere and that they featured art on the walls. The ladies bathroom needs a little updating and the paint choices are pretty awful. The service was good. I ordered the chicken cordon bleu omelet and it didn’t wow me but it was decent. The fruit was very fresh and delicious though. The prices were fair as well. I think everyone in my group enjoyed what they ordered.

Well. perhaps it was über busy or poorly staffed. I paid the guy $ 5 extra cash, if he would stop what he was doing and ring my bill up so I could get out of there. The food was good, but the service was so slow I was aggravated. Will need to try again and update this review.

This place is a really cute spot in downtown Suffolk. On the menu, my favorite is the fried green tomatoes. They take a classic dish and add a twist that just makes it amazing! I can never get a photo because I eat it too fast. I typically come here for lunch but wanted to take the family here for dinner. I had the flounder sandwich. The fish was HUGE! It was moist and flaky and cooked very well. I was only able to eat half it was so big. Hubby had the taco salad and we swear we are sharing it next visit because he barely ate half of his either! It was tasty and had a ton of fresh veggies. Really nice dish. I love that the Turnip has a lot of options for vegetarians. I have a hard time finding foods I enjoy at chain restaurants due to my limited diet. This one is on my go-to list for sure!

What a little jem. Tucked away in downtown Suffolk, it is a southern cooking diner hybrid. I had the fish sandwich. It was reasonably seasoned and cooked perfectly. No complaints with the entrée. My co-hort got a cheeseburger which he professed was one of the better burgers he has had around town. The place is clean and the staff is very friendly. The best part of the visit was the desert. They have a bakery case as you enter that has been stocked by an angel of bakery heaven. I had a brownie with a coconut icing reminiscent of a mounds bar. Good googly moley… it was HEAVEN!

We had our Sunday Breakfast here! Love that you can have a late breakfast! The food was very good. The grits were amazing! Definitely homemade! The atmosphere was wonderful. The restaurant is in an area where you can walk around after you eat and check out the stores. We had a very nice meal and it was very relaxing as well!

From the moment of me entering this restaurant nothing went well. I am not the kind of person who sits and waits to be helped. If I see the restaurant is not busy and there are several waitresses around that can assist me, I make an effort to inform them that I want to be helped. The plaid turnip fell into this category. At 12:30 on a Wednesday there were maybe 4 tables with people and just as many waitresses. I spent about 5 – 10 minutes getting the attention of a waitress to assist me who continued to look at me and walk away. I encountered this with 3 of the 4 waitresses when I was finally able to get someone to assist me. The bathroom is a whole other story. I encountered a swarm of flies, baby flies large flies in the women’s bathroom, there may be a sewage problem they are not aware of, I did make them aware of the issue. Because of the slow service I decided to do carryout. I ordered the whatta melt and added tomato with a side of fries. The bread was very greasy which I assume is from the amount of oil they are putting on the Panini machine. But I was happy with the amount of food given and the flavor of the actual sandwich was great. The fries were perfectly crisp but soft in the middle. I asked for a bbq sauce which was more like a glaze that you would typically see at a bbq place that is put on ribs. A little too tangy for my taste I will probably not come back even though downtown Suffolk is very limited in options. The slow service and mediocre food is not for me.

The food was pretty good. I ordered had the Countrified BLT which was a sandwich with country ham, lettuce & fried green tomatoes. The service was extremely slow! It wasn’t a big lunch crowd but it took 35 mins from the the time we ordered to the time they brought out the food. The server was pleasant but seemed very aloof. He had to come back to the table a couple times because he forgot our orders. he seemed to take 10 minutes to get the check & another 10 the bring back the receipt. I was recommend the place because of the cupcake display & variety but the case was empty when we went. I’d maybe go back when I’m not pressed for time & have some entertainment to occupy the long wait.

Food was good, not great. Stopped here for breakfast. My husbands veggie omelet had a few bits of sausage. He did say the biscuit was good. I had a standard breakfast of eggs, toast, bacon, and fried potatoes. It was all good. If I lived in the area I may come back, but since I don’t, I won’t.

S… L…O…W really really really slow :( perhaps even experience-ruining slow. Bring something to entertain yourselves, cause it’s gonna be a LONG wait for the food. Which is probably why you’re there, right? Extensive list of burgers and omelettes, some fried seafood platters, salads. Huge portions. Very kid-friendly, with a cute little coloring table. But the super sized drinks and free refills don’t bring your food any faster.

I would really love to give the Plaid Turnip a 5 Star rating because the food that the 8 people in my group purchased was absolutely delicious, especially the chicken and Pancakes(They were out of Waffles). So we established that the food was great and on top of that the interior design and atmosphere was really cool and eclectic. The downside for the entire group was that they were out of almost everything on their menu. We had one person with us that had to reorder her food 5 times and with exceptions like she could not get salsa because they needed what was left for one of the later shifts. That made no sense to me at all… Secondly we waited an hour and a half for our food. It came out hot but an hour and a half around breakfast time is outlandish, especially since the restaurant was not even on a wait. This could have been an extremely off day for them or the kitchen may be poorly managed, I am not sure as I have only been once. With all that being said I would go back with another group of 4 — 8 people and see how the experience was the second time as the food was completely worth giving it another chance, but if the second experience happens to be anything like the first one the second chance would be the last, because no matter how good the food the frustration would not be something I would want to encounter again after that.

The Plaid Turnip is one of those places I want to like, but have issues with. I want to see something do well in Downtown Suffolk and there be more eateries to attract foot traffic and a better atmosphere and reputation. The food is good. I love the Pimiento Cheese on Jalapeño Cornbread, however, it doesn’t come on Jalapeño Cornbread — it’s Texas Toast. nonetheless, it’s really good. They need to fix the menu though. I had a crab and corn chowder that was amazing — rivals the best she crab soups in the area. Unfortunately it was a special, and not something they offer regularly. The salad has always been good — nice crisp greens, tasty dressing(and just the right amount). Where it falls short — and damagingly so, is service. Slow. Slow. Slow. Not the worst ever, but just, slow. They’ve always been nice, but I think they’re just always under-staffed. They’re trying to get away with one less server than they really need. They probably have a really difficult to predict traffic schedule, but every time we’ve been in for lunch I always plan on it being at least 45 minutes and make sure I factor in more time than I would most places. Prices are great, food is great. They could easily be a 4 or 4.5 star establishment if they’d get some additional staff in there or figure out a way to work things more efficiently.

My boyfriend and I have been here on several occasions. I can say that there are two constants: 1. The food is wonderful. I am always happy with the food(minus the fried green tomatoes — fall flat); however, the Poboy sandwiches, fries, soups and salads are always simply spot-on. Kudos to the kitchen staff for a consistent, great job! 2. Service is slower than molasses in January. Make sure that you have plenty of time and are not on a timed schedule. We have been there several times during the mid-day shits, and we find ourselves constantly having to hunt down our wait staff for various things. It really sucks to seem like we just get forgotten about after having such delightful fare. I hope that this has been constructive and that in the future, both sides of the house will be perfect.

It’s elevated southern cookin, and it’s great. The bread pudding is seasonal, but shouldn’t be. I’d get it all the time; Isn’t that enough? I also kinda enjoyed shrimp and grits, for someone who loathes grits. The brisket was the best I’ve ever had. These are the things I tried at a party they catered recently, because it was my poor decision to leave the actual restaurant last year upon judging it by its interior. Don’t be like me. The Plaid Turnip is truly a hidden gem.
