Wish this place was closer. I still dream of their tortillas made with nopales. Had the empandas as a starter. Tried three moles, all excellent, with unexpected flavors and combinations.

Okay… Today was my second time eating here and I’ve been anticipating it because I knew I had to give an update and I was hoping it would be good. We came here to celebrate my grandma’s birthday and I brought my family here because I know the food is great, plus, I have plenty of picky eaters that criticize every single restaurant we go to so I knew this was going to be a test. I made reservations yesterday for a table of 13 and we started off with the mole sampler and horchata so that everyone could see what they wanted to eat. Let me start off by saying, my grandfather and my mom dislike mole and my grandpa is not one to try new things. The sampler had Pipian, Oaxaca, Guaxmole, Dioses, and Clemole. Once we got the sampler, of course, my grandpa didn’t try it because he thinks he won’t like it(he did try the nopal tortillas and liked them) but my mom tried it and she got Dioses mole(first test passed– score!). We also tried the empanada appetizer and that was good too. The food came promptly and everyone enjoyed their meal. This was really important to me because, once again, there are picky eaters in the family and I was the one who chose the restaurant so my food choice is at stake here ;). My mom, the non-mole eater, liked her Dioses mole, although she claims not to like sweet sauce and I consider Dioses mole to be sweet, but delicious! My grandpa didn’t order mole, of course. He ordered the garlic shrimp and he ate his entire plate as well(second test passed– score again!). The rest of my family ate their entire plates also, except me because I got full off horchata(haha). Now, for the service. This was my ultimate test because this would rate my review either higher than last time or lower than last time. Priscilla is a great waitress! She was patient with us and made sure that we were satisfied at all times. She refilled our drinks in a prompt manner and brought us extra waters. She also checked in on us frequently. Overall, The waiters at that time were great and definitely met my needs of improvement that I was hoping for– Ultimate Score! With that being said, I was a bit anxious of coming here today because I knew it would be pricey and it was food that may not meet my old school Mexican, straight from The Rancho family’s expectations. Even though my grandpa, the pickiest of picky eaters here, did not try mole, he ate his entire meal and said in his words«Si, estaba bueno». My grandma, the birthday girl, enjoyed her tacos and birthday flan. My mom, the non-mole and non-spicy eater, ate her entire Mole de los Dioses plate and the rest of us had a great dinner. It’ safe to say that today met all of our expectations and I am glad you guys made my grandma’s birthday dinner special. Once in a while, it’s good to be able to enjoy a great dinner accompanied by a great ambience and great people. You respectfully get 5 stars from me and I hope you only keep improving from here. My next step is to try the brunch! :)

Finally decided to try Rocio s mole de los dioses, been driving by it for the past years telling myself i need to try this place, since they first opened here in my hometown Sun Valley, all the positive feedback on Unilocal reviews are all true, the food is so delicious, it takes you to the beautiful Southern part of Mexico. I highly recommend to try the Sunday brunch early bird special between 10−11a.m. for $ 10.99– the buffet is open till 3p.m., when you first walk in they greet you, sit you down, ask what you would like to drink, I ordered the famous horchata, very delicious and refreshing, you then walk over to the buffet tables, they have a lady on the right making pancakes or omelets with choice of toppings, ordered with everything on it which includes mushrooms, fresh chile poblano, onions, tomato, spinach — that was filling, now to the left side of the table, the young man was very knowledgeable, he explained exactly what every dish was, if it was sweet or spicy, he offered to serve if you need help, the food trays were amazing from mole poblano, fish in cream sauce, sautéed green beans, small jalapeño chile rellenos, rice and beans, tamale– that had sweet and spicy flavors, they had caldo en su jugo that is a typical dish from Jalisco, it has pinto beans in its broth, bits of beef, bacon bits and a green chile sauce — delicious, menudo was very flavorful — across the table they had fresh lemons, onions, dried red chile, oregano for the menudo, next to that was the dessert table, flan and arroz con Leche– that was so delicious, the waitress brings you the drinks and a basket of nopal tortillas, those are truly deliciously soft, once you are done they bring you the check. Service here is amazing!!!

This place is awesome! OK, so I by no means am a food snob, but I rarely seek out eateries in Sun Valley. Nonetheless, I was so pleased that my wife placed a reservation at Rocio’s! What a great find. We were immediately hooked by the queso fundido with chorizo and onions. It was one of the best fundidos that we’ve had thus far. Our entrees were steak and chicken with mole. One was with Mole de los Dioses and the other was Mole Oaxaqueno. Both were fantastic! All served with rice topped with sauteed vegetables. Rich, flavorful moles. Filling and well-crafted. Fundido and mole were served with handmade nopaltillas… Even our kid’s quesadilla was fantastic with a pancake-like tortilla that was similar to a pupusa. We washed it all down with a tasty cactus fruit margarita. So good!

Best moles! There’s a reason they made Jonathan Gold’s list of best restaurants in LA the last two years — it’s warranted for the fabulous moles. Outstanding depth of flavor. Definitely get the 5 mole sampler for an appetizer. It comes with their excellent, and unusual, cactus tortillas. It’s a great way to try a bunch of moles so you can decide which one you want on your entrée. But I warn you — it’s tough to narrow it down to one, each is so good! Atmosphere has an old fashioned charm, is comfortable and welcoming, but nothing special. The patio needs an upgrade. Meat portions way too small.

Rocio is literally in the kitchen at all times. Awesome to see somebody put their heart & soul into every dish. I think the Mole Sampler is a must-order. Spring the extra $ 2 and get the five-moles so you can literally tour the diverse flavors & depth of each sauce. The green tortillas(made with cactus/nopales) are a little bit earthier than standard tortillas, but add a slight zing that is perfect for the mole(s). Their chicken is divine, as are the shrimp(camarones). The crab salad was a bit mushy and the flavors didn’t meld tremendously(somewhat reminiscent of a crab baby food, if such a thing exists) and the pork was a tad bit dry. Overall a must-visit spot in Sun Valley that oozes authenticity and heart. Worth the trek from anywhere in L.A.(right off of I-5).

The most heavenly the most organically delicious mole these lips have ever tasted. If I were to ever want to have sex with food, it would be the chicken mole oaxacana plate. This is the real deal. Go out of your way. Speed. Do not go slow for the most delicious meal you might ever have in your life. The green tortillas are a perfect mop up of the mole and the little shrimp soup starter is like Viagra for my lips. I’m addicted.

If you like Mole, Rocio’s will get you to love it! If not in the area, but you have a flight out of Burbank and are hungry before you take off, stop by Rocio’s for some mole dishes. With over 10 different moles to try, the best option is to start with the sampler appetizer with some of their fresh tortillas. Rocio’s also offers other traditional Mexican dishes that are on a similar level of their Mole, but Mole is king here. Service was great, as had a few beers before our flight. Rocio’s is right off the freeway and parking is plentiful in the lot right in front.

Mole is so good and Rocio’s knows how to make Mole! Jim G. and I finally made our way here, while on the way to Burbank Airport. Energy in the place was lacking, mostly due, I think, to being there fairly early for dinner. Tried the Mole Sampler and, while I regret that we didn’t taste the original Oaxaqueno Mole(as I thought I’d order it for dinner), I did find what may be my favorite forever, the Manteles. Thick, smoky, and spicy! Although we try to avoid carbs, we had to have some of the tasty tortillas nopales! So good! We shared the Mole Dinner with the Manteles, with Filet and Chicken. For the price, I would have hoped for a bit more meat. Also, let’s be honest, that was not a piece of Filet Mignon. It was good, but it wasn’t that. We also shared the Queso Fundido, which was tasty and, even as the cheese cooled, it didn’t congeal into a puck like most Queso Fundidos do. That was a nice surprise =) It is pretty far away, so I don’t know how frequently we’ll make our way out here, but it may have to be put into the rotation for when we go to Burbank Airport!

This place is not your typical hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in the valley. It’s in a little corner strip mall, and once you go inside you will see beautifully decorated walls and ceilings. I went to lunch with my boss at 2:00pm, so there were no crowds or wait times. We were served immediately with the free soup and tostada appetizer. I have never tried mole before this instance, so I naturally opted for the pollo Enmolada. I am so glad I opted for this entrée because I am now in LOVE with mole! It was the right Amount of sweet and tangy, and I would love to try more of their mole dishes! They also have the best mole lunch specials. I will definitely take my friends and family here one day!

Sunday brunch gives you an array of authentic Oaxaca food. It has really great flavor from the fish too the menudo. I gave it a 3 star do to the lack of customer service. We sat in the patio area which was dirty. Inside was full and all tables were taken. The price is right for a Sunday brunch and with that I will come back.

We got oaxacan mole gorditas and then barbacoa on top of cactus tortillas with pickled cabbage on it. It was really good. Service was friendly and quick. Restaurant was clean and nice inside. We saw a sign as we were leaving that they do all you can eat brunch on Sunday’s!

Wow! Definitely get the mole sampler! After carefully reviewing the other Unilocal reviews, I chose ones that seemed to be the most popular. My absolute favorite was the guaxmole, followed by the mole verde and mole manchamanteles. Note however, I personally prefer the less chocolatey tasting moles. What I was told was the most popular mole, the one with the multitude of ingredients was a bit too rich for me. However, my bf liked it. He really loved the mole velo de novis which has white chocolate, almonds and chile blanco. It is a bit too sweet for me, but he is eating right now as if it’s soup, and wants to order some to take home… I loved the diosa Aztecs soup, spicy tomato broth, Mexican cheese and avocado. My bf got the soup(I can’t remember the name– I think it was fideo) that had angel hair in it. He loved it; he said it reminded him of love /because his grandmother would cook it for him. He didn’t share. I personally didn’t really like the empanadas. They were soft, they didn’t have crunch, and were very different to the empanadas that I am accustomed to… They were out of whatever the most popular one was. But the food here is very authentic, traditional and I believe that my lack of liking it was due to it being just a matter of personal taste, and me not appreciating good authentic food. I’m not surprised that others have really liked them. I have strange, unrefined tastes. For instance, I’ll drink wine from a jug of wine bought from a drug store, so don’t let my comment about the empanadas discourage you from going to this restaurant; it still it was a perfect meal.

Having been to Rocio’s several times and with several different groups of friends, the general consensus is: Rocio’s rocks! Not only are the moles delicious, there is such a variety that you will certainly find something you like.(Try the sampler first!) But, holy mole, Rocio’s also has Sunday brunch! And it’s AYCE! And it always includes one mole dish and numerous other dishes such as chile relleno, chicken, tamales, fish, fruit, pan dulce, rice, beans, and rolls. Beverages are extra; try one of their aguas frescas with unlimited refills! Dining at Rocio’s is like visiting your family for Sunday dinner; the food is delicious, the service is nice, and the atmosphere is cozy. Details: Sunday brunch is from 10 am to 3 pm, $ 10.99 for you early birds(10-noon), $ 14.99 thereafter. Park in their lot. Buen provecho!

I don’t ever write reviews for restaurants right away, but this place is an exception. Actually, I’m still currently here. I am Oaxacan, so when it comes to mole, I am very picky. This place has the best selection of mole. Hands down. For starters, we ordered the nopal with piña drink, which is cactus with pineapple. I know it doesn’t sound good to some, but please give it a shot. It’s such a refreshing drink! While we waited for our food, we got a small complimentary shrimp broth with a small tlayuda(Oaxacan tortilla). For those of you that don’t eat a lot of spicy things, please beware: the soup has a spicy kick. Their menu has a variety of Mexican plates, but their restaurant is called mole de los dioses afterall. The mole section consists of two parts: part 1 — protein(you get to choose your type of meat/veggie — salmon, chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, mushrooms or chile relleno. Part 2 is the hardest section: choosing your sauce. You have about 15 different sauces/moles to choose from! I chose the chile relleno with mole de tequila. I was a tad disappointed because it wasn’t too distinct from the mole oaxaqueño. But on the plus side, it’s the best mole oaxaqueño I’ve had in a really long time! Everyone’s plates look scrumptious and I want to keep coming back to try everything on the menu!

Best Mole around! Had the Filet Mignon Chicken Breast for protein and the award winning Mole«I can’t pronounce or spell it» So gooood! Loved the atmosphere of a hole in the wall coupled with the meal presentation of an upscale cantina. Yvette was our host. Great friendly service. Highly recommended

One of the most under-appreciated regional cuisines of Mexico is from Oaxaca, a state down in the south specifically known for their molé. It is much less common than Mexican street food and Tex-Mex in Los Angeles. Preparation of molé has been part of Oaxacan cooking for over several hundred years. What makes each type of molé sauce special is that it’s a complicated combination of over a couple dozen ingredients including spices, dried chiles ubiquitous to the Oaxaca region, and even chocolate. Some spices are fried and toasted, the combination is pureed, and then simmered in a pot for several hours. The special type of chiles used makes the sauce distinctly Oaxacan. The procedure to slow-cook Oaxacan mole just for a thickened sauce is tedious, but it is the main highlight that is even more important than the meat that the mole sauce is typically poured over. I came to Rocio’s for a molé tasting after hearing Rocio’s mole is rated top-3 in Los Angeles, considered to be in the same league as the renowned Guelaguetza. Rocio offers a 5-mole sampler that includes a repertoire of 15 moles, each with a discrete level of sweetness, spiciness, bitterness, thickness, and color. Chef Camacho prepares traditional Oaxacan moles and also creates her own varieties with a «modern cosmopolitan» flair. I carefully chose five from the impressive lineup that would cover a wide range of tastes and textures. Molé Oaxaqueño — The award-winning mole negro, also happens to be the most elegant. Very rich with a lingering charred and bitter flavor from dried chilis that stands out. It also had hints of dark chocolate and cinnamon. Spectacular velvety texture. Molé Manchamanteles — My favorite mole, mild on the heat level, but extremely smoky with a contrasting fruity-sweet and cocoa finish. The mouthfeel of this mole was dry. I really enjoyed the complexity of this dark mole, it started out tasting like dirt but transitioned into bitter chocolate, vanilla, and fruits. Molé de Los Dioses — An earthy, slightly smoky mole served with a layer of cheese on top. More savory and thinner than others. Has a dash of sweetness. Guaxmole — Texture was in between a guacamole and thin mole sauce as its name implies. Tastes like garlic, onions, and toasted sunflower seeds, with a little bit of heat. Molé Velo de Novia — A sweet white mole that tastes like a blend of vanilla and cinnamon. Topped with nuts. Has a thick consistency like a bean stew. It would pair best with fresh seafood like fish or shrimp. What puts Rocio’s over the top is that their moles are served with a heaping stack of warm nopaltilla, which are brought over from the tortilleria next door. The nopaltillas are similar to regular flour tortillas, but are slightly more sturdy and have the slightly toasted-bitter flavor reminiscent of bell peppers. I used a spoon and splashed mole sauce over them. Nopaltillas are the brilliant creation of Rocio’s management team. It is a green tortilla made with Nopal cactus that not only tastes good, but is high in fiber and consumption helps reduce cholesterol. I closed my lunch with a cup of horchata topped with pumpkin seeds. It was one of the best I’ve ever had. The horchata was gently sweetened with cinnamon, the perfect refreshing beverage to counter the smokiness and spiciness of Rocio’s molé. The meal was expensive($ 15 to $ 20) for the quantity served, but it’s reflected in the hours of preparation required to prepare and perfect the molé. I can’t wait to return and see how Rocio’s moles taste with meat.

Bottom Line: this place is pretty awesome but be willing to open your wallet a little wider than you might expect Ive been to a lot of Mexican food places in my life — lets just start there. This is certainly a cut above the rest at least as far as quality is concerned. The food was high quality. We had a large party and ordered a bunch of apps and I liked them all. I especially liked the home made tortillas that they serve which were delicious. After so many apps, I wasnt that hungry so I just ordered the lamb gordita which I liked.
The reason this place doest get 5 stars is because of the prices. $ 3.50 for horchata? I mean it was awesome horchata… but still. If you want a mole plate, you’re going to be spending $ 20 easy. all in all I really liked it and our party had a good time. good service, great food

Drove over an hour to come and try their moles again. Brought friends this time and everyone enjoyed their meals. Favorites were the Poblano, Oaxaqueño and Nopal. Portions are good size and very filling. This is the second time we come and leave full and happy. Looking forward to our next time.

Olé! Rocio’s Mole de los Dioses in Sun Valley offers excellent homemade Mole and nopaltillas! While staying in Burbank, I Unilocaled Mexican food. We chose to try Rocio’s in Sun Valley. We started with the appetizer which lets you choose 5 homemade moles and nopaltillas or homemade corn tortillas made with nopales(cactus). We enjoyed trying these 5 distinctive moles: –Mole de los Dioses –Mole Oaxaqueno –Mole Mancha –manteles –Mole Verde –Mole de Pistaches My favorite mole was the Mole de Pistaches(pistachio). I ordered the chicken with Mole de Pistaches as my main entrée. It comes with rice and veggies. While the mole sauce is delish, the chicken was a little dry, and not quite as tender as I’d prefer it. The rice was plain. The beans are homemade and delicious, and I’m glad I ordered a side of beans. I highly recommend Rocio’s if you love mole, but it’s a bit pricey. Our bill for dinner for 2 people was a little over $ 54, before tip. We each had 1 beer, 1 shared appetizer, and 1 entrée each. When I’m in the area I’ll happily dine here again because I love mole, and the homemade nopaltillas are delicious and better than plain corn tortillas! But I’m hoping they can improve the tenderness of their chicken, so they can earn 5 stars. The interior of the restaurant is attractive, and suitable for a casual date night. But looking at it from the outside, you wouldn’t guess it was this nice inside.
