The Hole Donuts

Hole Donuts creates little pillows of sugary goodness. Freshly made with superior ingredients from what appears to be scratch, I feel these donuts are unique and delicious. HD has a presence at the Fresh Market of Hyde Park (the first Sunday of the month at Hyde Park). The donut offerings are different on any given day and given the creative inclinations of the creator.
Hole Donuts turns out yeast raised, cake and brioche donuts. On our most recent trip to the Fresh Market of Hyde Park we tried a lemon curd filled lemon glazed yeast donut (small) and it was delectable. There also was a chocolate brioche raspberry glazed donut, a ginger (made with ginger beer) yeast raised donut topped with candied ginger and a ganache ribbon, and a black forrest cake donut as well as Bronco colored sprinkled donut and Panther colored sprinkled donut in honor of the two teams competing in the Super Bowl today (2.7.16).
Although I feel the prices are a bit on the high side, the donuts are a specialty product and are very well made and utilize great ingredients. My lil nibbler thought the donut we shared was AH-​MAZING!

I’ve had a wide variety of The Hole donuts around the Bay Area; they sell to some local restaurants and markets and show up at indie markets, though they don’t have a retail shop of their own (the address on their Unilocal page is wrong, and probably the owner’s home or something). Personally, I don’t find they’re worth the hype or the high price. They seem to really market their exclusivity: because they’re mildly difficult to come by, people are willing to pay more than they’re perhaps worth. Taste-​wise, they’re not much better than similar, wildly less expensive donuts from Fray’s or St. Pete Bagels. They may use higher end ingredients and they certainly have clever, creative names, but at the end of the day a donut doesn’t have much room for a sophisticated flavour profile around a wad of fried dough and super sweet frosting or filling. And do you want to pay four dollars for a donut because the sprinkles are homemade?
