Good place but there were two issues. First, we ordered a meat platter they would not switch out any of the meat. Since it was premade it could not be done is what we were told. Also, they will only refill their own growlers. This is a mistake. There are many breweries in Tampa that will refill any growler. Even if you put a small charge on the growler it would be a place I would frequent more.

Fun and interesting place — a sandwich shop, in a shop, in a bar LOL :-) All in all this place has good food and really good beer selection. Also, lots of fun chocolate and curios to leave with — Das Boot!!!

If you are of German descent, or ever wanted to be, then this is the place to be for dinner. Authentic German food, though somewhat American-ized. Food is good and servers are well versed in the selections of both food and beers.

This review is based on a pick-up order placed after lunch rush on a Thursday. I live 3 minutes away, tops so I figured everything would still be hot by the time I got home…(wrong). I ordered 2 appetizers: the Haus-made Potato Pancakes(4count) with sour cream and applesauce & the«German Hot Pretzel» with Obatzda(cheddar& beer flavor) to dip it in. 1 side order of green beans w/onion, garlic, and bacon 1 slice of German Chocolate –The potato pancakes didnt taste as fresh as I wouĺd have liked them to, but were good enough paired with sour cream.(I tried putting applesauce on them but wasn’t really digging it) –the«German Hot Pretzel» with Obatzda wasnt even warm when I got it(3minutes after quoted pick-up time) the obatzda tasted like hummus, wish I would have gone with AgedCheddar instead. –the green beans: i only saw 1 piece of bacon, was really hoping for more flavor but they might as well have been canned. –slice of German chocolate cake: see picture, it satisfied my craving I had for chocolate but I couldn’t tell if it was home made or pre-packaged and served. Plus it was $ 6 so I guess I was just expecting a little more. I don’t like to leave unsatisfied reviews but I couldnt help but feel dissapointed… especially with the prices being higher than I wanted to spend in the first place. I had convinced myself the flavors would make up for the price yet they were mediocre. I’d definitly be willing to try them again, and order some different things(the apple streusel looks amazing&I’m curious about their Cheese Spaetzle) but I’d be dining in instead of ordering take-out…will update my review when I get that chance!

So I have known about this place since it was located in the University Mall ages ago but I have not eaten here before until recently. YES I totally regret not coming here years ago. I’m adding Mr. Dunderbak’s to my eat everything on the menu list. The food is amazingly, heavenly delicious. WOW! I went there with my co-workers and I was even eating their food cause I wanted to try everything. Everything tasts so good and so hard to pronounce the names. I even ordered a to go meal even though I had left overs from my lunch. My lunch was than made to dinner for my son and I and he absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to go back again and have more German fries. I’m starting to think I must have been a German in another life :) Service was a little slow but it was due to the lunch time crowd. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to help me select my perfect meal.

I love the beer and sausage selection! If it were a little more comfortable inside we might go more often. Tables are very close together. That being said the food selections are great. Waitstaff is very knowledgeable but they really need to be trained to bring silverware and napkins when patrons are seated. Nothing worse than sitting there watching your food get cold while your party is waiting for the basics. Try the veal schnitzel with egg and anchovies, or the meatloaf is also good. I’ve had better sauerbraten… theirs tastes like roast beef that someone tossed a canned sauce onto. Get all of the sausages and try them. It’s kid friendly with a retail counter that has tons of candy… and chocolate!

After reading a Unilocal friend’s positive review for Mister Dunderbak’s, I made it a point to stop by. Very positive experience here as I’m a big fan of German food and German beer. Dunderbak’s does both well. While it seemed that the hostess didn’t understand my request for a table in the corner, the two-top I did get had a view of the television and I was able to get a small amount of work done on my laptop while I downed my first beer. I also enjoyed one of their tasty German pretzels without getting any salt or mustard on the keyboard. With my second beer, I enjoyed my main course. The Sour Cream Schnitzel was a very large portion of pork(as with all schnitzels, they are also offered with veal) with a sour cream and white wine sauce, topped with red and green peppers. The schnitzel was traditional(a bit less crispy than one I had in Munich) flattened tenderloin, laid flat, battered and fried. I went with the traditional sides, rotkohl(red cabbage) and spatzle(noodles). Very large portion, enough that I had some to take back to the hotel for second dinner later. The beer club started to fill the place at 7:00, so if you’re a fan of a full joint full of people having a good time, plan around that. They also have half the place reserved. Good food, great imported German beers. I’d return to Dunderbak’s.

We have not had German food in quite a while, so decided to drop into Mr. Dunderbak’s and see what it was like. Pretty typical Faux German Beer Hall inside… which seems the standard for these types of places. Service was good… we were seated immediately, although at a wobbly«Hi Hat: table in the smaller bar area. Waitperson was right there for drink orders(just water, since I was driving, and she doesn’t drink). but hey, the water was good! We both ordered the Schwienhaxen, me because I love it… and her because it sounded good and she had never had it. Got mine with Potato Pancakes(extra charge) and the Wilted Spinach salat. Girlfriend got Green Beans and a Cucumber salat. Her Cuke salad was very good, green beans just so and so. Pancakes were good, as was the spinach salad. The pork hocks were roasted to perfection, skin slightly crispy, meat tender and delicious… and well spiced. And the hocks were large, so we both had some takeaway for tomorrow! :) For a Friday night(early 6pm to 7pm) it was not overly crowded, or noisy! Service was great, food was great… well worth the cost… pretty reasonable, actually! Highly recommended… especially if you are also a beer lover… because after all, beer is why many people come here!

This place is a hidden gem! Amazing waiters/staff — very knowledgeable about menu and extensive beer selections. Owner is proud — administers a test to all his waiters to ensure knowledge base. They will be brewing their own beer in May 2016 — on site! As far as the German food — as good as you could hope to find outside of Germany. Many many things made in house(red cabbage, apple strudel dessert, sauerbraten… Etc) their sauerkraut is imported from Germany and is incredible! We ordered two main dishes: 1. Oktoberfest $ 12(comes with your choice of 2 sausages –I choose Bavarian brat & weibwurste — you can request them boiled or grilled) 2. Sauerbraten $ 17(delicious meat marinated for 5 days in red wine vinegar!) * each dish comes with a choice of 2 sides We had to sauerkraut imported form Germany, red cabbage, spinach(which was amazing!!!) and warm German potato salad. *** special not TRYTHESPINACHSIDE — melt in your mouth! — I would skip the warm German potato salad — it was very vinegary and not my style. We also ordered a side of their potato pancakes that come with a side of sour cream and apple sauce — AMAZING!!! $ 7 — sides include 2 potato pancakes — you can substitute a side from your main dish for potato pancakes for an additional $ 1. For dessert we ordered their homemade apple strudel with a side of ice cream! It was incredible!!! $ 6 + $ 2 for ice cream — large enough to share with another person. They bring out a variety of mustards — yum! And a ketchup curry that is a must try. They also have a deli to buy products from them — we bought one of each kind of sausage and enjoyed trying a little of each one for dinner the next day.

By far the best German food I have ever had. Have been 5 times so far and each time the food and service has been consistent and excellent. Everything I have tried has been awesome but my all time favorites are the ziguner snitzel, the Von Bomb(enough for at least two) and the cucumber and dill salat. Honestly anything you try will be amazing and deliciously comforting. If you are a fan of classic German beer styles or American craft this place has everything. All beer is fresh and served in correct glass every time. If you are ever in the Tampa Bay area this is a must go for fans of good food.

Sadly… I just do not like German food. I have been to several German restaurants and I just cannot figure out the food… I love all kinds of foods but there is something going on with German that I just cannot seem to get behind. I had the sour cream schnitzle and it was good but… I won’t be having it again. I mean, it was fine. I like lots of sauce but it was drenched. I enjoyed the beer options, service was great and I loved the man playing music. He was my favorite part. I would come here again, get a pretzal and beer but dinner is not my thing. I like that they are child-friendly and it was loud enough it wouldn’t bother other diners if a child got a little loud. I would come back but I would skip dinner {personally}. Tips: Be ready to wait. It’s busy! Parking is a bit of a pain but we eventually got a spot on Friday night. Plenty of beer options. Question — why do the beers on the changing list SCROLL the details? It is almost impossible to read. I would suggest not doing that… it makes it difficult to make a decision.

First time trying Mr. Dunderbak’s…Pretty cool place. Authentic German atmosphere & family friendly. I ordered the Oktoberfest Sausage platter(Bratwurst & Andouille) with warm potato salad and walnut/raisin coleslaw. All of the food was very good. It took a little while for the food to arrive once we ordered. It was packed during our visit. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something truly unique in the Tampa food scene.

What an atmosphere! Just an awesome place to have good food and good beer. The food is more than good… It’s got the long tables you’d expect and it’s always been busy when I’ve gone. Staff are also fun and add to the atmosphere. Location is a bit out of the way(could almost argue to go to St Pete for the new German brewery they opened up if you live in downtown Tampa) but if you’re in the area definitely worth your time.

What a great find, and you need a local to guide you to this nondescript strip mall location. But once you locate Mr Dunderbak, you will be greeted with great food and good beer in a large beer hall environment. We sat in the side bar area so we could watch the Bucs game while enjoying lunch. The menu is full of german dishes(think sauerkraut, reubens, schnitzels and sausages). I went for the pork schnitzel with choice of two sides which was great and came with your choice of 2 sides, so it was a good way to explore the menu without investing too much in something I might not have fully enjoyed. I went for the Pierogi and potato pancakes as my sides and both were great as was the pork schnitzel. They also give you a side of applesauce and sour cream to add flavors to your items. My friends got the Von Bomb sandwich which looked amazing and has a little bit of everything good in it. But it is too huge they say, so best shared with 2 people, and my friends did. The beer selection is quite extensive with many German beers I have not hear of, and I think they may make their own here too. I had a Hacker Oktoberfest and a session Pale and both were good. I would welcome coming back here the next time I’m in Tampa

Still as good as it gets!!! Stopped by Dunderbak’s tonight to meet up with a friend. Had very delicious beers as expected and amazing food. Our beertender, James, was very patient with us as we took quite a while to make our selections. I had Monarchy Year of the Dragon, Barley Mow Quackalope and Freigeist Hibiskuss. All fantastic and at a good price. For food I tried the smoked gouda, tomato and spinach sandwich on pumpernickel(noted as a vegetarian selection on the menu!) served with chips and a pickle. DELICIOUS for $ 5.99 :) yet I ate it too fast to provide a picture. I think what I love most about this place is that the owner, JB, is almost always present in the restaurant. And I must say… he knows his beers and brings an extremely unique assortment to this establishment! The bartenders know and appreciate good beer. Parking may be rough sometimes, but I am always willing to go out of my way to drink and dine here. An amazing German place that I am thankful to have in Tampa! Go here!

Huge beer section here. Bottles and taps. Can’t drink outside right now so just get a table inside or sit at the bar. There’s a mini grocery store inside with imported snakes and goodies. Food is authentic and good. Also has a section of American inspired. Get the warm potato salad. It’s way better. Enjoy this little Tampa gem that started out in University mall.

So excited this is my closest German restaurant. We actually just moved down the block from Mr. Dunderbak’s-which is disastrous for any plans I had of eating healthy. So I“m sure I’ll be rolling around like delicious German wurst soon. Our friends actually brought us here the first time. The Restaurant: The place is great, ample parking and set in a little plaza. Inside it’s not huge as some German restaurants go but it’s big enough. I can definitely see a wait during a busy weekend or anytime during Octoberfest, obviously. Its loud; filled with the sounds of German folk songs and the happy chatter of patrons having a good time. If you don’t like loud chatter, laughter, and occasional squeals from people welcoming their friends, this is not the place for you, actually no good German restaurant is the place for you. I don’t trust a German restaurant that isn’t loud. Every wall is lined with local German goods like drinks, steins, candy, breads and other treats. There is also a deli for cold cuts(I’m assuming) and sandwiches. The Food: The first time I had the Chicken Breast Ala Dunderbak’s the garlic chive cream spread they add was delicious and amply spread all over the chicken. I usually get the ham on the side since it’s pretty large and just slides around. The chicken was a perfect size and also tender. The second time I had the chicken breast sandwich I was a little disappointed. The chicken was too thick and was super tough, I tried cutting it with a knife but the chicken breast was not having any of that nonsense. I gave up and made my teeth do some primeval work and Jurassic Park’ed the crap out of that chicken breast. Sadly they even went a little stingy with the chive cream spread. My chicken sandwich was sad that day I think. Anyway, I just assume someone rushed it, it was a bad chicken from a bad family, or you know, someone had an off day. The hubs had the Jagerschnizel during both visits and loved it! I tried a little corner piece and the breading was perfect. I don’t eat pork or lamb so I was super sad to see they don’t do a Chicken schnitzel like Hollerback’s Willow Tree-My favorite German Restaurant and a community staple in Sanford. So sadly, I’ll never be able to enjoy the yummy schnitzel here : —( That sour cream schnitzel would be perfect on chicken, just sayin’. The Spatzle was perfectly done; tender and crunchy and the potato pancakes were also perfect. You’ll also find an abundance of mustard and sauces on the table or available to use. The Service: Again, it’s loud, so occasionally you’ll try to get your waiter’s attention and they’ll just walk by you. They’re not ignoring you intentionally, they just can’t hear you. The best you can do is make like Kermit and wave your arms around like a Muppet. Everyone was super friendly both times we visited. So we’ll definitely keep coming back, since we live down the street and all. PLEASE think about adding chicken to meat choices for schnitzel. I’ll bring my own chicken breast if that’s what it takes.

I will keep this brief, since apparently the owner can get reviews taken down for no valid reason. My previous review was fair, honest, and adhered to the Unilocal guidelines. I even gave it 4 stars! However, the owner did not like that I included two pieces of constructive criticism. He sent me a very rude message, and as I said, somehow got my review removed. I am giving it 3 stars now, because of the poor way the owner reacted to my perfectly fine review. It is sad, because I used to go there a lot, and enjoyed my experiences. Now, I will never go back as long as it remains under the current ownership. For those who want to try it out: Pros: good beer selection, good German food, also have American faire, servers are all friendly, good for large groups. Cons: takeout order always wrong, service can be spotty.
