I had dinner tonight with my friends, a lovely couple in their mid 80’s. My friends are extremely social and energetic, they talked with me about the transition to moving here and the different options in terms of independent living. I was struck by how well dressed, up beat and sociable everyone was in the dining area. My friends described this like living in an elderly sorority or fraternity house, there was always something to do — they play tennis and tai chi, exercise and take classes. They said that when someone may fall ill or lose a spouse the community supports them and they have a lot of people around and that is very healthy. Dinner was ridiculously good for a retirement home.(although I can’t say I have ever had dinner in a retirement home before, so dinner was just plain good) Had a chopped spinach salad, wild salmon, yams, squash then ice cream, served by a student waiter. Environment is nice, library lovely, gated, lots of greenery outside and areas to walk. Nice way to retire.
