Annie’s Place

Went last night for a last minute family dinner. Awesome that being a small local restaurant they are open until 9 pm. We each got a burger cooked to different levels of ‘doneness’. Each was perfect. The Hot Air fries were delicious! The sweet potato fries were so-​so. The homemade buns were absolutely wonderful. We got pie slices to go, and while the Fudge Pecan Pie was not what I was picturing in my head when I ordered it, it was delicious none the less.

Visited on ½/​15 after reviewing the menu to ensure there was something to eat for a vegetsrian and a very picky 5 year old. The food was lousy. Spinach artichoke dip was pre packaged and the quantity was ineadquate, abot 5 tablespoons for a large boel of chips. Cheese quiche was ok, but warmed in microwave. Hamburger was overcooked and very dry. No chicken tenders fot the 5 year old and she had tster tots only. Meatloaf sandwich was bready. 1 star was being generous.

I regretted suggesting Annie’s Place after my experience this evening.
I ordered carry-​out and was led to the bar to pick it up. A woman put a receipt in front of me and walked away to take orders at tables. I ended up waiting for more than five minutes with no one at the bar to say anything. I want sure if anyone was even working the bar. After finding the host, she assured me the woman I saw was going to help me. That’s when the waitress noticed and came back to say she told me to hold on and that my food wasn’t ready yet. This was 10 – 15 minutes after the quoted time of 10 – 20 minutes to be ready. If she would have been kind enough to say hello and that it wasn’t ready, I wouldn’t have been worried about it.
I got my family’s meals and took them home to find out my meal was wrong. I called to let them know, the same waitress was nice about it and they asked me to come back and get a freshly made chicken fried chicken. It was awful. The chicken was just made and it was soft and felt like the flour to coat the chicken was mush. The fried batter was flavorless and I couldn’t eat much more than half.
At least I got a free slice of apple pie out of it. :/

Annie’s Place appeals to the older crowd. They have a lot of normal dishes you’d expect at an American style restaurant. The food has a homemade appearance and taste. If you want a quiet dining experience or a place to bring a large family party, this would be it.

Family restaurant, located near a strip mall shopping center. Restaurant is relatively quiet and is a nice place to meet with family or friends. The restaurant is clean and the employees are friendly. Ordered a cobb salad and it was so-​so — nothing exciting. Menu seems rather plain.

Located in a shopping center so old and dingy that we were reluctant to go in to the restaurant. However, Annie’s itself is clean and neat and fresh-​looking, though it serves very old-​fashioned coffee shop food. And not really the worse for that. I had a very plain meatloaf sandwich with a salad (full of iceberg lettuce, of course). The best item was the soup of the day, an astonishingly thick and rich cream of chicken.

Awful. The mini corn dogs for our kids were moldy on the inside. The restaurant smells like a nursing home. I will never go back.

Met a friend for ice tea and pie on a Thursday afternoon. The restaurant was quiet and perfect for a nice relaxed conversation. Our server was friendly and attentive without being overly obtrusive. Our coconut cream pie was wonderful and delish; very close to what my grandma would make!

I used to eat here fairly often, but havent been back since moving back to Topeka a few years ago. I used to LOVE the food and service here (especially the fresh baked goodies). Went in around 5 on a Wednesday (fairly early), maybe half a dozen tables taken. Took forever to get seated as there seemed to be only one person in the front of the house, period… seating and waiting tables. Ok, not that outside the norm for early dinner, But… no amazing bakery smell. Before they were baking all the time… and at the very least had rolls baking every hour or so. But the ovens were cold, the baking area looked as if it hadnt seen use in a while. I ordered the chicken fried steak, wife ordered a philly dog with chili cheese fries.
Service wasnt awful, but the food took a while. When we were finally served my chicken fried steak was burned on the outside, yet they managed to still make it soggy (imagine partially cooked shake n bake cooked by a 12 year old with ADD). It had obviously been either made weeks/​months ago and frozen for quite some time, or they order it in frozen and reheat it. Regardless, it was the single worst chicken fried steak I have ever had in a restaurant… the worst since my Jr High cafeteria. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant. The «gravy» was partially congealed and seemed as if it had come frozen too. Chunks of something in the gloopy mess that I think were supposed to be chicken, but I wouldnt swear on it. Horrible! Oh… and the «dinner roll» was prepackaged. WHY serve that when you have an amazing bakery right there? So disappointing! Wife’s hot dog was passable, she said, but the fries were soggy (yeah, yeah, I know! Air baked fries often are. But Annie’s fries used to be a hallmark!). The chili was Hormel (without a doubt). The cheese wasnt actual cheddar, but some imitation. Not entirely melted, and a lot of grease from the «CHEESE» (as you sometimes see when cheap cheddar substitute separates).
One thing we noticed: we’re in our 40’s and I swear the average age dropped 35 to 40 years when we walked in (yes, waitress included). The wife thinks that the owners and/​or alleged cooks just stopped trying, since their average clientele will just eat it and smile. Dont know. My grandmother died at 82 and was demanding as all hell when she went to a restaurant, and wouldnt hesitate to send back a meal with a message for the cook, «perhaps a job at McDonalds would better match your obviously limited ability». I should have taken a page from her book and sent my meal back!
Anyway, this whole mess and 2 drinks ended up costing almost $ 30. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! You can get MUCH better MUCH cheaper in Topeka. Avoid this place like the plague. I know I will never set foot in there again… especially since my wife and I both are having disturbed digestion.

I was very disappointed! Since we are new in Topeka I asked around and a couple of people suggested Annie’s. So we went there for Mother’s Day, walked in and they had a our reservation and so far so good. Our waitress was a nightmare… there is nothing worse then a waitress (or any one else) reaching across your plate or anyone else’s. She reached over my husband plate to grab my glass to fill it with water, I grabbed it first and reached behind my husband and handed it to her. She was not very happy with me. She returned to our table to leave condiments and on purpose reached across me to put them on the table. She is very lucky I didn’t poke her with my fork! My husband had to ask twice for a coffee refill. When we received our food the Chicken Cordon Bleu looked and tasted like it had been sitting all day, the so called cheese sauce was lumpy and tasted like chalk. The meatloaf was complete joke! Needless to say we will not be back.

It’s a nice restaurant, first time for me to try it, I have the grill chicken breast that was awesome and light, prices are reasonable, service is friendly, it was busy at lunchtime midweek which is always a good sign :-)

I was a frequent diner here when I lived in Topeka. The food was always good, the service was good, and the prices were nice. They make a mushroom sandwich on their marbled bread that is to die for, but as I’m allergic to mushrooms I just mooned over it most of the year. Once a year, however, I would take my allergy pills, drive to Annie’s and have that delectable sandwich, then drive myself to the hospital immediately afterwards for a shot. And yes, it was worth it.

Been here twice and both experiences were good. The food we’ve had has always been good. Their bakery is amazing and they bake everything there on site, you can see the lady working back there. I’ve only tried the cinnamon rolls but I’d love to try more. The only thing wrong with Annie’s I feel is the décor, it is outdated and could use a little makeover and updating.

Grabbed a late lunch here with a friend a couple of weeks ago. I was really disappointed with the service considering we were only one of two parties in the restaurant. We were seated without menus, then we had to ask for silverware. My Iced Tea was gross, extremely bitter as if the machine hadn’t been cleaned in a while. My chicken sandwich was good, but nothing special, lacked seasoning and there where no condiments on the table. The cheese soup tasted like melted nacho cheese. Not that exciting. I would have given three stars except for the service.

Annie’s has been open since 1986. Over the years I’ve been a at least two dozen times or so. They are in a great location, easy to access and easy to find. The atmosphere is causal and feels like a family restaurant. They have both booths and tables as well as a bar and can accommodate large groups as well.
The menu selection is good, but not excessive. The burgers are delicious and you can’t go wrong with them. On my last trip I ordered the Annie’s Allouette Burger. Actually, I have a hard time not ordering it the thing is so delicious, and the air fries. As always, the flavor was fantastic and the fries were soft pillows of potato heaven. (For not frying them, the fries are fabulous.) My husband got the special of the day which was a slice of Ham and Potatoes Au Gratin with a fresh baked roll. I think I forgot to mention they bake all their breads and make the pies there, in-​house.
Not every single trip I’ve had there has been spectacular — I’ve had a slice of pie that wasn’t anything special and at a company party the meal was just okay. I think it was roast beef. But usually, the food is great and the staff is always very friendly and does everything they can to make your visit pleasant. I wish they’d back down on the prices a bit, but everything is going up all over the place so I can’t really blame them — but $ 9.50 for burger and fries is pushing it in my book. Still, that burger keeps me visiting at least once a year. If you haven’t been and you’re in the mood for a good burger, give ‘em a try.

Pretty good place for salads, sandwiches, and soup.

Been going here for years but noticed it is getting less and less busy. Tonight they they were about 30% full. The reason for the 1 start rating is for 2 reasons. First, when we were getting seated they were going to seat us at a table that every time the front door opens there is a freezing cold gust of wind we know this because we have been seated here almost every time before anyway we politely asked to be seated somewhere else because it was cold. At the same time a waitress walks by and says «it’s cold everywhere». I couldn’t believe she said that that. I was not happy. Anyway we get seated and then our next issue happens. We get our food ordered and we begin to wait during that time a couple of tables get seated and ordered there food which is no big deal except both tables with 4 people each get there food before we did and by looking at the food it was similar to what we ordered. We waited at least 45 minutes after ordering before we got of food. We typically order the same thing every time we go and it’s maybe 25 minutes tops no how busy they are. The place was dead. Anyway the food was mediocre and it will be the last time we go here.
If you want better food in this area of Topeka go across the parking lot to Mcfarlands Resturant. The food is much better at a great price and the staff is extra friendly.

Bread from onsite bakery is great. Everything else was just okay. Grilled chicken sandwich was just the chicken on plain bun, with a little bowl of sweet and sour sauce.

Annie’s Place has been consistently «pretty good food» for at least the 10 years I’ve been eating here and that kind of consistency impresses me.
They have a Daily Special and a Daily Quiche every day but I recommend looking for these items on the whiteboard when you come in because I have never had any of the staff recite them to me. My favorite here has long been the Allouette Burger [$ 7.49] or any of their burgers, which are quite excellent but also notable are any of the «Stuffed Spuds» or really, most of the Daily Quiches.
I wish I could give it a 3.5 because though I like Annie’s, I think the staff can be really hit and miss, sometimes the food takes a ridiculous amount of time (but sometime it doesn’t — especially in the late afternoon.) and I would definitely describe it as favored toward the retired set. I have been the only person in the place under 60 who wasn’t working there on more than one occasion.
All that said, Annie’s Place is good choice for locally-​owned, non-​chain, off-​wanamaker classic American cuisine at lunch time. At dinnertime, I’d suggest springing for Brick Oven instead.

Best. Burgers. Ever. I’ve traveled and eaten out quite a bit and these are simply the best burgers I’ve ever come across! The service is a gamble… when it’s bad it’s very, very bad. We’re delighted when we are there on a good night, when we are waited on promptly, food comes on time, check arrives soon after food taken away, they come back and get the money, etc. On bad nights this can take a looong time.
