Psychedelicatessen, just like its founder, is a true original. Laura has a zero-compromise policy on quality OR community. This ain’t a just a Place, it’s a full-on Joint! Go for the most authentic bagels in the capital region and stay for the vibe, or go there for a place to chill and let yourself notice all the details that make up a business fueled by passion and personality. Bottom line, it’s a place that feels great, has solid food and coffee, and brings like-minded people together, which is arguably a far more important function than just serving food, no? Pro-tips: the lox is not TOO salty. It’s just salty lox. On purpose. The kind that old Heebs in brooklyn have been wolfing down for eons. Deal with it ;) Also, in nice weather, ask for the nook!

I’ll start by saying that the food here is great, but the service is some of the rudest and most pretentious I’ve ever experienced before. Definitely something you wouldn’t expect from a place that has the Grateful Dead all over the place. I always try and give people and places the benefit of the doubt, maybe that person has had an off day or you caught them at a bad time, but when you are literally ripped apart by a member of staff when you inquire about the status of an iced coffee you’ve been waiting on for 20 mins, there is something seriously wrong. This staff member did so in front of the owner who did nothing. Not even tried to apologize for the wait or being yelled at by her staff. I’ve worked in the service industry for many years and I’ve never gone out of my way to insult or belittle someone for asking a question. Obviously something is wrong with your system when an iced coffee order goes on the same wait list as food. Drink orders should be handled by the counter and food orders should be handled separately. I mean I could’ve made the coffee myself in the time it took for this person to pour. And it was HOT coffee being poured over ice. So naturally the ice melted and you are left with luke warm, watered down coffee. I digress though because they are just a bagel place and not trying to win people over with their iced coffee. But the way this woman acted toward us and gave us a two minute rant about how hard she was working and that we should be so lucky to get a coffee was enough for me to NEVER return. And I’ve talked with many other people around Troy who’ve been mistreated at this shop before and feel the same way about the staff here. No matter how good your product is, it’s the service that people remember.

Great bagels and I am like their big sunrise with a battenkill crack. Best bagels in the area(not the best bagel I have ever had, though). I am a fan that they use locally sourced products, helping out the local farmers and other companies.

Fine Bagel! Maybe not the best I’ve had, but one of the best I’ve found around here. Right size too, not one of the oversized sort that seems to be the default. Also a thumbs up for the friendly server behind the counter.

I LOVE this place. I moved here from Long Island where bagel places are on every corner and was sad to find upstate NY lacking in this regard(and Bruegger’s bagels are not good). But ever since Psychedelicatessen showed up I have not been disappointed. Their bagels are made fresh, they are soft but not doughy, with a nice bite. Everything is made with local ingredients and their cream cheese spreads are phenomenal. My favorite thing to get is an everything bagel with cucumber dill spread, or a Big Texas.

Awesome bagels with the perfect, crispy shell. The atmosphere is very welcoming and comfortable for taking a break. The staff is friendly, the service is reasonably quick, and the selection is always good. The sandwiches are a little pricey to be part of a daily routine, but they’re great for a quick treat. The frozen bagels are cheap as can be and still delicious with just a little time in the toaster, I always pick some up when I’m in.

This place is AWESOME! To start the staff is great, very friendly. The hours are fantastic, they open at 5am and make their bagels from scratch. It’s impossible to find great food at «Zero Five» but they did it! The coffee– the coffee is DELICIOUS and they even have frozen coffee cubes for guys like me that want black coffee but cooled down a tad. Amazing. The food– I’ve only had their breakfast sandwiches, but they are the best breakfast sandwiches hands down in the capital district. The cheese alone is amazing, seriously the cheddar will make you obsessed. Your first bite and you know their ingredients are absolutely top notch. Stay classy and eat local.

Great place! Trendy environment, and friendly staff! We had the Foxy Loxy, and LEO. The salmon is a bit saltier than one might prefer, but there’s no shortage of cream cheese spread on the bagel. If it were busier I could see seating being a problem. Parking is at a premium so be prepared to walk a little. But it’s so worth it, and we will def be coming back!

I love this place for bagels, they have such a good selection of cream cheese and bagels. Always a perfect stop when visiting the Troy farmers market on the weekends. I stop in whenever I can!

The only reason I come here is for the milk and the bagels. I wish they’d train their staff to not be rude and what not. I’d probably want to stay and hangout but I just want to get in and get out.

Clean yet funky! Quirky and fun. When I don’t want a big breakfast this is the place I go to for a quick bite and a cuppa. Nice staff, great bagels and a cool relaxed ambiance make me a return customer. There’s usually something interesting playing on the stereo and I always feel welcome. Unlike Bruegers or other chains there are actually seeds on the bagels! They used local growers and products and can prove it. Basically I love the place, the only bother is that they no parking and trying to find a spot in a revitalized Troy on a weekday is impossible. But I really don’t mind the walk. Dave

I was drawn into Psychedelicatessen by the sheer number of possible sandwich combinations. Intrigued by the idea of a pesto bagel, I planned a whole sandwich around it. I chose turkey, mozzarella, spinach, and sprouts to round it out. The bagel was indeed fun and the toppings were all pretty high quality, although I was bummed that my mozz was sliced rather than fresh. There were so many choices on the menu, including an option called«The Lunch Lady» which gets you a surprise/cook’s choice sandwich. This worked out well for my brother-in-law, who received a yummy roast beef sandwich(everyone who stole a bite said it was great). Sides were a dill pickle or mixed bagel chips, neither of which I loved unfortunately. We got a locally made apple cider to drink, and it was tasty. Interactions with the staff were a little strange – only some of us were offered sides, a few questions were met with blank stares – but nothing egregious. The prices were reasonable. For breakfast(or whenever), single bagels are $ 1.00 apiece, and if you want to add a topping, there are 10+ options(including some non-cream cheese choices). If traveling through Troy again, I would certainly stop at this bagel joint near the cozy town square.

Food — almost always great! And i appreciate their use of organic and local ingredients. But STAYAWAY from the lox, its expensive and tastes like your eating straight salt, on both the Foxy Loxy(especially salty with the capers) and the lox egg onion sandwich. I almost couldn’t eat it, it was so salty. Much prefer spillin the beans huge lox sandwich. Staff — hit or miss. Sometimes I go and they are quick and friendly. Other times I have had to repeat my order 2 – 3 times when they were apparently not listening, only to have the bagel made wrong anyway. When this happened, the worker just scraped the old cream cheese off my already bitten into bagel and replaced it with the flavor I ordered… I thought that was really inappropriate and probably not Serv safe, but maybe she didn’t think to make a new one after her mistake. Atmosphere — very cool and comfortable! Nice place to hangout for awhile, and I like admiring the artwork. Overall, I certainly like this place in downtown Troy. However, the lox recipe needs to be addressed and the staff could use a little work.

This space is so unique. It has a coffee shop feel with lots of bold colors in the front, and then off to the side is this beautiful hippy space. It looks so comfy and cozy, it had board games, and lots of different places to sit and lounge. It’s a great space to hang out with a group and just chill. This place has incredible ice coffee. They put coffee ice cubes in it! It’s my #1 go to for ice coffee in Troy for that reason. It’s full of flavor and not at all watered down. The regular coffee is okay, nothing special. The bagels are delicious, and you can get them with hummus if you are vegan. I also sort of wish I could drink milk(It would be bad) because they have this drink that has chocolate milk in it. Genius. If you can have milk, I’d suggest you get that. because I want too, but I can’t. :(

I adore the tie dye-it’s an instant mood booster. The owner strives to have as many local vendors as possible. There is a map and you can locate where the cheese, tea and etc are from while you wait. The bagels are bit small compared to a bagel you would get at DD or the grocery store but they are fresh and delicious. In addition, there are a number of spread options including flavored cream cheeses, butter, hummus and quark. If you want something more substantial, you can have a sandwich(breakfast ones are available anytime too). I would recommend the Cuked out. It’s turkey, mozzarella, lettuce, sprouts, cucumbers and cucumber dill cream cheese. It’s filling without being heavy. I’ve had the LEO twice(egg, lox and onion) and it’s a good combo but the salt on the smoked salmon is overwhelming. Yes, lox is salty. I have eaten a lot of lox but this was the saltiest one I ever had. So proceed with caution. My favorite way to enjoy is to ask what is freshest and have it plain or with a bit of cream cheese aka a «schmear». Overall, I’ve been digging all of the groovy vibes this bagel shop is giving. Peace, love and bagels!

Great food, nice staff, inviting and cool décor. The Asiago cheese bagel with egg was great! We also had two bagels with butter which were great. Slightly smaller bagels than ones in the city but equally as tasty! Bagel was fresh and hot. Love the psychedelic décor and different seating areas. Can’t wait to return.

From the rainbow colored outdoor seats to the«tye dye tee explosion» interior, this place lives up to it’s name! The groovy, funkadelic 60−70s vibe doesn’t stop at the décor, the staff is very mellow and friendly. I stopped in for some bagels on a Sunday AM and I was in just in time! When I walked in there was no one at the counter and then all of a sudden there was a line almost to the door.(May have been overflow from spillin the beans café!) It was tough choosing my breakfast sandwich with names like the«Big Texas» and«Stick to your ribs.» But I stuck to the egg and cheese on a spinach Parmesan bagel which was decent but nothing out of this world. They have a nice assortment of bagels including the usual and the not-so-usual like spinach Parmesan, chocolate, jalapeño cheddar and pesto. My husband had the everything bagel with regular cream cheese and that was quite good! Love the outdoor seating, friendly staff and the variety offered on their menu. I took my food to go but they have plenty of indoor seating; and despite the tye dye explosion, it seems like you can relax and stay a while. Finally, my favorite part: they open early! 5AM weekdays and 6AM weekends, early birds(or insomniacs) everywhere rejoice!

I attended a wedding in Troy recently, and they had an informal next-morning breakfast here. I’m from Long Island originally and have very high bagel standards so I was excited by their claim to have authentic NYC bagels. So I will get this out of the way: for me, they did not live up to that claim. The texture of the bagel I had wasn’t any different than one from Brueggers of Panera. Perhaps there is some truth to the old story about the NYC water being key even when the same recipe is used. HOWEVER, the taste was good, there was nothing actually bad about it and there was a lot to like about this place besides. So, for me it was just a case of being set up for disappointment with a bold claim. I could totally believe they’re the best bagels in town. So let’s get to the good stuff! First of all, the block this place is on looked really cute. I’m not a local, but this strip made me feel welcome. I love the name of the shop, and the theming inside that goes with it. My dad, a genuine 1960’s hippie, joked about having flashbacks when he came in. We had an area of the café curtained off for our group(with tye dye of course) which gave us a nice bit of privacy. I had a sandwich, and the name now escapes me but it was a cinnamon sugar(french toast?) bagel with the usual breakfast sandwich filling(I think it was egg, bacon and cheddar but may have been sausage) plus, and this is key, warm apple slices. This combination was a delight and I applaud them for stepping out of the breakfast box. Yes, i had some quibbles with the bagel itself, but the overall package was great. I would totally eat it again. Because I was still toting my free hotel tea(probably rude, but it is what it is) I didn’t get to sample any drinks, but I saw some fresh-looking iced tea behind the counter which is always a plus for me. If I ever find myself in Troy for breakfast again, I’d be happy to return.

Where can you get a great bagel, a doughnut from Cider Belly, and a tie dye shirt all at the same place? All with super friendly service to boot? Psychedelicatessen that’s where. I enjoyed my bagel sandwich, the«stick to your ribs». Bacon, sausage, egg and cheese on your choice of bagel. Meaty, cheesy, eggy, chewy goodness. It did indeed stick to my ribs and left me satisfied and happy. I also liked the down to earth, homey feel of the place. And I loved the comfy chairs and couch in the back. They have free wireless too. This is a great spot to have a bagel, or better yet, a bagel sandwich, sip a coffee, and while away the time surfing the internet or chatting with the friendly staff.

Ever since I lived on Staten island back in the early 90’s, I have been on a search for a NYC style bagel like the ones I used to get every morning in the city. My daily routine then was a salt with a schmear and a large black coffee. It’s been 20 years and I have never really found the same taste and texture that the little old jewish couple used to provide me every morning on the way to work. I’m here to tell you, I found it again!!! And I couldn’t be happier. I purchased two things this morning after I got out of work and the night shift. A salt with a schmear, and a L.E.O.(Lox, Egg and Onion) on an everything bagel breakfast sandwich. I sat down when I got home with a black coffee and consumed that little piece of salt bagel heaven. Yup. I found it. Finally. I saved the breakfast sandwich, because I knew I would need a bite to eat when I arrived at work tonight. Again, once I settled in, sat down and downed that sandwich with a tall water. All I can say in Psychedelicatessen, you are spot on! Bagel was perfectly chewy and crunchy, lox was very fresh and tasty, overall, just an out of the park sandwich! Today, you earned a new regular. I am a shift worker, so your hours work very well for me whether I am going to or coming from work. Put down that previously frozen doughy overly chewy thing you got from DD, and go here instead. You’ll never look back!!! (On a side note, if you bring a non service dog into an eatery, you get what you pay for. To give one star because people were shocked at your blatent disregard for health code, well that’s just unfair)
