Definitely a fan of the food. Service was another matter. Cranky/spacey woman took our orders. A posted special featured a tamale combo plate(two tamales, your choice, plus rice and beans) for $ 6; an extra tamale for an extra $ 1.25. I asked for two extras so the plate would have two green corn and two red beef tamales. This threw her; she said I could only get one extra tamale for $ 1.25 but the second extra would cost $ 3.00. Fine, I said, charge whatever you need to. She did, and it totaled almost as much as a second combo plate. But when the order came out, there was only one extra. When I pointed it out she repeated that I only got one extra tamale for $ 1.25. The place was packed and the food cheap so I didn’t argue. The tamales were AMAZING and the fresh salsa that came with the plate was super-fresh and flavorful. So I recommend this place. You can get them in bulk to carry out, which I would recommend. If you dine in, just stick with the program and you should be OK.

They make the best flour tortillas! I’ve ordered them in the past when we have a big business luncheon and were serving Mexican food. We picked them up fresh that day and they were still warm when we made it to our location. If you need a bunch of tortillas, order ahead, they go fast! You can’t always just walk in and get a ton on a whim. So worth the planning ahead.

I’ve driven by here a myriad of times but never gone in for lunch. I had a combo today and it was yummy, just-spicy-enough chicken tacos, refried beans and rice. The salsa was really, really good — not quite like any other salsa I’ve had. There was a line to the door of people buying both tortillas and salsa to go, and five of the six tables were full. RC beverages, but I’m getting used to finding them in small businesses here in Tucson, though not my favorite. Will definitely return.

Wow what a difference there is in tortillas, never realized different was a possibility in tortillas! Being a life long Midwesterner until a bit over a year ago, tortillas were white and doughy tough(grocery store), then we come to Tucson and find out about this place! OMG!!! Tortillas to die for!!! Thin, yellowish and warm, really warm! The only tortillas in town for us! Was back in the Midwest for a couple weeks and had the store bought ones, oh GROSS! We always take these when we travel in our motor home to California! Love their chips too!

Their in-house flour tortillas are great, as everyone attests, but the Luly’s corn tortillas they sell are also some of the best I’ve found in Tucson.(Trader Joe’s store brand are on a par though.) I love coming here and picking up a package of fresh, hot tortillas and a big ol’ container of refried beans. Add a bit of Poco & Mom’s green chili and cheese and I can eat well for a week!

Great tortillas and salsa, picked up a few dozen to send out for the holidays and they were an absolute hit with everyone. Never tried the food, but it looks and smells pretty darn good.

Best tortillas in town! Jalapeño is too spicy for me. I stick with their plain– I can eat a pack on the way home!

So good I love coming here. The lunches are delicious and the tortillas are without a doubt the best around. On another note can I just say how lame it is to read really good reviews with four stars or less? If you love it give it the credit. If something was off make yourself useful and explain why! As someone that worked in a position that relied on similar numbers it matters.

I have to admit that I have never had anything off of the lunch menu, just the tortillas. These tortillas are phenomenal. I can bring home a warm pack of them and eat a whole bag of them if I’m not careful. Always fresh and the original tortillas are hard to be but I like the jalapeño ones too! Dirt cheap and darn good!

The best tortillas! My kids love when I pull up to La Mesa and run in to get a fresh, hot tortilla! Highly recommend!!!

Can’t get good torillas on the east coast as good as what they have here at La Mesa. Had to stock up with several dozen to take home with me. Only downside is they charge $.50 to use a credit or debit card. I would recommend La Mesa to meet your tortilla needs.

La Mesa tortillas are the best we’ve ever eaten! When our children moved out of state they asked us to ship them tortillas regularly, and we still do! We enjoy lunch at the Broadway location as well!

The tortillas are so good that I got them delivered to Brooklyn for the 8 years I lived there. The small jalapeño tortillas make the best breakfast with eggs and chorizo and I can never leave without buying tamales. When they have the green corn in stock, buy some!

Great tortillas. Most times I go in to the Broadway store the tortillas are still warm in the bag and when I eat them they just melt in my mouth. I can’t resist picking up some chips either which are substantial and have a rich corn flavor. My son loves the kick of the jalapeño tortillas, and my wife thinks the whole wheat ones are ‘healthy’, but I’m a plain flour kind of guy and sometimes grab and eat a still steaming one out of the bag on the drive home. So I just want my family to know that ‘a dozen tortillas’ is actually twelve, not eleven. I have not eaten off the menu except to grab a container of red chili once when I didn’t have much time to cook. It was alright, though a bit salty, but the tortilla I wrapped it in was great. I guess if you call yourself La Mesa Tortillas you specialize in one thing and do it very well. That is fine with me.

La Mesa Tortillas is another one of our weekly destinations. It has the best tortillas in town, which are also available in whole wheat and jalepino. We love to buy their tamales and beans and rice and tortillas. It makes for a quick, easy and delicious meal at home!

I have childhood memories of eating a freshly made tortilla, with nothing(OK, maybe a little butter) on it, hot off the placa… indescribable. My mom grew up making stacks of tortillas daily for her many siblings. She lives out of town. When I go to visit her, she requests that I bring these tortillas. That, right there, should tell you everything you need to know about the authenticity of La Mesa tortillas. Go there and get a dozen, still fresh and hot, the bag still full of steam. So why only four stars? I’ve tried their food in the past. THAT’S not as good as Mom’s… but what is?

Love me some La Mesa tortillas! A good tortilla can make a meal. I love them with my husband’s famous shredded beef tacos, with butter and cinnamon/sugar, or just straight from the bag. The only trick is to remember to bring cash.

East-side gringos: * Get your fresh tortillas here * The red chile beef is tender and tasty for lunch; you can also bring a tub and fresh tortillas home for the family for dinner. Quesadillas are good for a snack also — much better than Napoleon’s home-made Kay-suh-dil-las. * Order tamales in November/early December for advance pick-up. Usually do not give 5 stars to a take-out place but this is quality and if comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges, for take-out this one of the better answers.
