That’s it. I quit. I have given this place three chances and it’s absolutely HORRIBLE. This last time I went in with my little brother for a mid-afternoon snack at about 2:30 or so. We got there and it was, surprisingly, a little busy. The waitress(also the hostess and manager) greeted us fairly promptly and told us to choose a table. We picked a booth by the window. I got nachos with chicken and my brother ordered the steak street tacos combo. We both drank soft drinks.(I think it unreasonable that only one free refill is included for a whopping $ 2.25, especially since there’s about 9 cents of product in each glass…) The service was moderately prompt and the waitress was friendly, which is why I gave them a 1, instead of the –4 that they deserved. The chips are served with beans instead of salsa, which could be neat, except that they want to charge you $ 1.50 for a crappy little dish of salsa. We got the hot salsa, which was passably spicy, but had no flavor whatsoever. The beans that came with the chips were bland and uninteresting. The chips themselves were pretty good, they tasted homemade, but you don’t get refills on the first little bowl they give you – you have to pay. My nachos were TERRIBLE. They had a little smattering of cheese on top, and were dominated by gristly and overcooked little balls of chicken, too many refried beans, and pico de gallo that tasted alcoholic(probably spoiled after four days of not having been eaten). I ended up eating about three or four bites, but the waitress neither noticed nor cared that the food was blah. My brother said his tacos were good, but didn’t eat the beans or rice because they were bland. We were both surprised when the check came out and we owed $ 22.44 for such a mediocre meal. The first time I went here was a few years ago and I rememer that they had really fabulous margaritas, which is why I gave the place another couple of chances.(That was four years ago now… I’m not even sure now if the margaritas are still decent.) If you’re going in just to drink and don’t want any appetizers, then this could be the place for you; if you are even a little hungry, I recommend somewhere else.

So in my quest to try more of the Tucson Originals, I ended up at Taco Bron on this last Friday. We went here because it was open late and were going to dinner after a movie and was in the general side of town I wanted to stay on. We were seated fairly quickly, but that was because no one was in the dining area… everyone was on the patio as it was karaōke night. The patio seemed nice and everyone outside seemed to be enjoying themselves. The waitress took our drink order as soon as we sat down. When she came back(pretty quick) we ordered. I ordered the seafood combo which came with one fish taco, one shrimp taco, and one shrimp caramelo. My friend order the three soft taco combo. After putting in our orders the waitress brought us chips and refried beans… Now, I am cool with not having chips and salsa, but the beans were just okay. Nothing special at all. I would have preferred to try their salsa. I orders were out quickly. My taco’s were fine, nothing special. I did really like the flavor of the shrimp caramelo. The combo also came with the cilantro rice and beans. Again, same beans as before, just ehh. The cilantro rice was good. I like the change as I am not a fan of the traditional rice that comes with mexican dishes. My friend said his food was good too, but again, nothing spectacular. Overall, it was okay. The service was good and quick, but I really would have expected nothing less since we were the only ones in the dining area. The food was just okay, nothing special. I would maybe go back for a happy hour, maybe lunch, but probably not for another dinner.

Eh. I’m on a «let’s see how much money we can save» trip, so I did a search for places where kids eat free. This is one of the places we found for Sundays. That, and the fact that we’d never been here before made us want to go. Let me just say that as a Spanish speaker, I have to commend them on their clever name. It has made my parents and grandmother laugh, gasp and«Ay, Dios Mio» at the mention of the name. Even though I’d never been here before, I had certainly noticed their name. Good job on that. Not such a good job on their service. We walked in and were in passing by a hostess/waitress saying she’d be right with us. We waited around in the company of an annoying, kitschy skeleton dressed like a pimp and singing Super Freak(I’m not kidding). It wasn’t my idea of ideal décor, but it wasn’t enough to make me want to leave. We were finally seated, well, showed our table when the waitress asked us what we wanted to drink. Yes, before we were seated and had even glanced or held on to a menu. We made rash choices but she missed out on a good opportunity to have us order a more expensive drink. If I’d have seen the menu, I’d have ordered something else. There are no kid menus. Kids could have a quesadilla or a taco. I had a hard time ordering because tacos are sold individually. I thought it was pretty odd, but I guess you could mix and match that way. The food was good, no complaints there. It tasted like fast food, but nothing really to whine about. No wait, I tasted the tortilla soup and I didn’t like it. It tasted like I’d had a spoonful of beef broth with nothing else. It might have been good, but not the little portion that I had. The check came and we were charged for the kid meal. I asked the waitress if kids still ate free and she said yes. No «sorry, I forgot» or «sorry, we charged you wrong», just yes. That bugged me to no end because now I think that they’re charging people that don’t ask. If we didn’t know, they would not have told us. She came back with a revised check and we waited. And waited. And waited. My husband finally asked if we could pay and we were told we had to pay up front. It would have been nice to know that before. All in all, the only way we’d go back here is maybe if we’re in the neighborhood and it would be a to go order. The service was horrid and the food isn’t great enough to be able to suffer bad service for. A real disappointment.
