They catch a lot of heck over going up on their prices but you know back when they opened you could get sodas for .69 now they are 1.29 and up. In honesty they still have good food and sure it’s a bit more now but inflation happens. It sure does seem like there’s a lot more fatty pieces in their food now though.

Great food! Everything was made fresh. The beef was amazing! Loved the corn tortillas.

The #7 beef is my favorite. Their green sauce is the best in my opinion, hot hot hot, but not too hot. The tortillas are tender and taste«buttery». The ingredients always taste fresh and they ALWAYS get our order right.(Which is kinda rare for our family) I love all of the Lugar locations… But I’m most fond of Gentry, I just think it’s better there and it’s open on SUNDAYS! The prices are awesome, you can’t beat those prices… I would take Lugar over a Jalapeño Tree or any other BORING, overpriced, fake, tex-mex any day of the week. HOORAYFORLUGAR!

This place is the bomb diggity!!! I’ve always ordered the number seven with no veggies and a side of beans and rice with a rice water. It’s good every time!!!

One of the best taquerias ever! I’ve never found tacos like them anywhere. The #7 is most popular and a great place to start. #6 is great for meat lovers and a #5 is great for vegetarians. I also love a #1! Try the ham if you’ve never had it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that on occasion, in the 20 years I’ve been going, the meat has too much gristle. Load up with red and green sauce and enjoy!

I learned about El Lugar when I was in college living in Tyler. El Lugar is so amazing. There is nothing else like it on this planet. The original location on Gentry is the best. Do yourself a favor and get a #7 with green AND red sauce. Both will light you up in a great way! Please get a food truck and come to Austin!

Love it! A number seven with ham and a number 5, flour is the way to go. The red and green sauces are worth the trip.

It kills me to give this place only two stars. I practically grew up on their tacos. But the quality has gone down hill. They use to pack their tacos will a good veg to meat ratio. Now it’s mostly meat and the meat is tasting really different and not in such a good way. I usually go to their southern location it’s getting kinda meh as well. But it will be a while before I come back to this one. I have faith that they will make it as good as it use to be. I really hope they do because it was so very good. On the bright side, bathrooms were really clean.

Fantastic place to go if you want a great taco. They have added to the menu but you have to try the #7 first and the cantaloupe water. Be careful because it is highly addictive !

El Lugar is what you want if you are looking for a taco. Anytime an out-of-towner asks where, in a town overrun by Tex-Mex, you get a decent taco — I tell them El Lugar. Anytime an old friend comes in from out-of-town, we go straight to El Lugar for good food and nostalgia. The #7 is what dream are made of… Dreams and massive coronaries — but, damn, what a way to go out! Awesome food! Tip: As I understand it, each location is ran by a different member of the family, and as such, each one is ran just a little differently. Unfortunately the quality/taste varies a little from location to location — but the original El Lugar on Gentry is hands down the very best one! Great job guys! Go Local!!!

This place is delicious. I always get the flour number three. It’s a beef taco with cilantro, tomato and avocado. So good! My sisters get the number seven, and they really like it. That’s a large quesadilla with beef. This place has the best tacos, but it does have a weird smell downstairs. I dine upstairs whenever possible. If you absolutely cannot stand the smell, try the location on the square. Their tacos aren’t as good there, but they are close and there is no smell!

We’ve been hearing about this place for years. Called before we got there to ask if they were open for breakfast, and they said yes(10:30); showed up and they were open, but no breakfast. The chips and salsa were good. However, we tried the famous #7 and a super taco jr, and none of my 4 family members were impressed. Like other reviewers, we were not fans of the beef. Very chewy and even had to spit some of the grissly stuff out. I’ll give them another chance, but probably order chicken or ham next time. Gotta say, not real sure why they’re so famous.

I hate to admit I took this place for granted when I lived in Tyler. For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed the tacos here. Now that I’m 2,200 miles away I crave this place.

Overpriced, not an acceptable ratio of vegetables to meat. It was packed with meat and almost no veggies which usually I’d let slide but their meat wasn’t good, had a weird kind of bland taste. Sauces were okay. Tacos were okay, the corn tortillas were old. My husband never complains about where we go even if I think it’s awful but even he said it was way overpriced for the amount and quality.

So… this little place is easy to miss but is a gem in my home town. They have a small menu but it is delicious in so many ways. Real down home mexican hole in the wall, run by the family. Order at the counter, no waitstaff and they make your food right then and quick. My fav has always been the super quesadilla, yum! All in all… Legen … dary!

We were at Cedar Creek lake this weekend and decided it was time to go to our old favorite El Lugar. Only trusting the original location we returned with eager anticipation and were sorely disappointed. Something told me when we saw no crowds as in days gone by that something had changed. We placed our order as always and waited, waited, waited for our iced tea. It never came. We went downstairs to ask, and got an apology and that it would be right there. This really surprised me since there were only a handful of customers in the whole place. I think there was more help in the kitchen than total customers on hand. It finally came, then the ensuing longer wait for our food. We failed to get our sides but at this point it mattered little. What we did notice was the #7 is half the size it always was before! The only salvo for me was that the quality and taste was still the same. I left hungry even after splitting a second one with one of my comrades. Adding insult to injury, we always take our cups on the way out and get a refill for the road. When we got to the refreshment stand, the urn was gone. I waited for the young lady to come back out of the kitchen and when I asked about the tea she simply responded«We ran out». «You can help yourself to a coke out of the dispenser.» That was a «wow» moment for me in light of all the other disappointments. I have never heard of a restaurant running out of tea. Since they are only a couple of blocks from a huge grocery store I found that amazing. I fear that this one time«destination» may well be on it’s way out. It certainly gave every appearance of being so. Color me very disappointed.

Love the green sauce at el lugar decent service and decent prices. My only complaint is the meat is kind of chewy and doesn’t seem to be good quality but hey it is a taco shop not a steakhouse

Was with my wife in Tyler for a work trip and we stoped by this place with little expectation. We looked through Unilocal and went here after a visit to the rose garden. The restaurant looks like a hole in a wall but the food is very authentic Mexican. priced right I will stop by this place of I am in Tyler again.

I don’t quite understand all the love for this place. The lengua is pretty good, but sometimes they don’t have it and their other locations will sometimes look at you funny for asking for it. The tacos are all right, but you get the choice of beef or chicken(with occasionally lengua, too) – sans any of the other taco stand staples. Really? Do you have to gringo the menu down this far to exist in Tyler? I don’t think so. Cash only. Mexican cokes FTW. You can call in orders and pick them up at the window, which is neat, but geez – at least add a little variety to the menu.
