I make the Perkins Street Schat’s my usual stop on long drives up 101. They have an incredible selection of breads, and pastries… not to mention a great lunch menu. They have a good local coffee brewing, and teas to go. I haven’t been to the other locations, but this one is a good lunch place, which I imagine is busy during the week, as it is located across the street from the courthouse.

This place has good food but the customer service is terrible. I went with a group of people and we all got lettuce on our sandwiches and there were two different types of lettuce but when we ordered they didn’t ask us which one with wanted. Also, they ran out of some of the bread rolls and told us they were out after we ordered. I do not recommend this place unless you don’t care about customer service.

On another Friedman’s excursion I decided to give Schat’s another try as I reached a high hunger level. I walked up and noticed the basket of muffins in the glass case. The woman said they were all priced differently and I opted for a poppyseed and almond, my fave. Thankfully it was quite moist and filled with poppyseeds! So although I won’t be back for the macs, they do make a pretty good muffin!

Tried this place for the first time today. Delish sandwich! And the cookies and can no liability were yummy too! Who knew you could get good food inside a hardware store!

This place is an embarrasment to the Schat’s name. We waited 30 minutes for 2 sandwiches. It was not over-crowded and there were six employees working — so they were not understaffed. Yet, we had to go back to the counter and ask about the status of our order before we were finally handed a couple of wrapped sandwiches… no bag, no napkins, no apology, nothing. The whole order was wrong but we didn’t notice until after we stopped later for lunch. We asked for a tri-tip sandwich, but got roast beef instead. We wanted 2 small size sandwiches but got a large and a small instead. I had anticipated some delicious fresh bread from the bakery, but the sandwich bread was dry and most likely some of the«day old’ bread off the discount cart. We will not stop here again. Many other options along Highway 101.

This place is busy! If you can get in the door, order and find a place to sit, the food is going to be great! I wish you could sit down and they’d come take your order though because the standing in line thing is a little weird to me.

Delicious sandwiches. Fantastic organic bread. We like the Friedman’s menu best. A Ukiah staple.

I was a regular at this place for years. As the years rolled by, it became obvious to me that Zack Schat was totally indifferent to whether his bakery provided any degree of hospitality or even common courtesy. The sheeple keep on coming. They merrily wait in line for institutional indifference. I used to get bacon and eggs there more often than my cardiologist would approve. When doing so, I would sit where I could see the pickup station. If I didn’t, the eggs would sit there for as long as 10 minutes. What finally did it for me was the morning I had waited in line for the better part of 10 minutes. I arrived at the order station. While I stood there, another employee complained that some newly baked bread was in his work area. The cashier rudely told me she was«busy» and to go elsewhere while she sacked bread. I found myself in back of another long line. As luck would have it, by the time I got back to the front, the same cashier reopened. I said to her, «that was no way to treat a customer». She literally spit«sorry». I haven’t been back in a year. I refuse invitations to lunch if it is to be at Schat’s. The past two decades have lowered general expectations down to the level of the chow line at the local jail. Schat’s usually makes it over that bar. I am an old fud who remembers better days. Zack will continue to get rich but not on my dime.

I really love their food! I ordered the chicken pasta at one time and I loved it!!! Their tuna sandwich was good too. All their bread and pastries are something I’d crave for. I’m only giving them four stars because when I ordered a sandwich for my colleague, they put the wrong one in the bag. Five stars for food, four stars for not double checking orders. It’s ok, I’ll comeback here again for sure!

The service is slow, bread isn’t that great. Whenever they heat something it’s usually in the microwave. The cupcakes are about the only thing worth getting.

I had a half sandwich(a more than decent portion) and soup. The sandwich had avocado, turkey and bacon. It tasted great and was fresh. I would definitively recommend this place!

I WANT to love this place. The sandwich options are among the best available — large sizes and lots of good ingredients. The baked goods are pretty good, too, but I wouldn’t say sweets are their strength. Their bread is very good. However, I’ve gotten used to, as Jason C. writes, «some kind of wrong» in my order there. There has been some type of screw-up* the last several times I’ve ordered something at the Friedman’s Schat’s. Today, over our sandwiches, several friends and I were discussing this and it turns out there are many people that know this to be true; Schat’s will mess up your order. It’s too bad their customer service(lots of turnover in staff!) can’t keep up with the yummy items their menu offers. When things go right, a Greenhouse with added pastrami is my go-to. Tons of veggies and some protein. *Examples of mistakes: – Missing or extra items in take-out orders – Never was served ordered items when dining in – Wrong ingredients on sandwich order – Exceptionally long wait with no apparent reason – Small sandwiches given instead of the large as ordered

This bakery has wonderful food for lunch and breakfast. The broccoli cheddar soup was amazing and my sand which went perfectly. The red velvet cupcake was really good as well. The chia tea left something to be desired however and I would not order it again.

Poor service. Coffee pot empty was not refilled for 10 min. The ladies were not busy. Also the coffee lids bin was empty. I understand if they were busy but they weren’t.

I used to go to Schat’s as a little kid in Lone Pine, CA. When I saw the sign from the freeway, I knew that was where I wanted to stop for lunch. I ordered a turkey and cheddar on Sheepherders bread and it was wonderful — one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time.

The baked goods here are always stellar. Made right on site and fresh daily, there’s nowhere near here that can hold a candle to their baked goods. Unfortunately, the service is regularly very slow, unnecessarily so most of the time, and on many occasions your order(if it doesn’t come out of the case) will be some kind of wrong. I go here often, and have just come to accept the regular negatives that come with visits here.

Great sandwiches and bakery goods. Never ate in a home improvement store before but don’t let that stop you!

My husband and I ate here yesterday, usually everything is fine but for some reason they were extremely slow at getting orders out. And then they were out of essential Sunday morning stuff like croissants and sausage. We ended up asking for our order to go(which was a just a breakfast bagel with bacon) then they brought it out after waiting for almost an hour just wrapped in aluminum foil and its was very skimpy on all accounts. Portions are usually quite large and we split it between the 2 of us. Hopefully this was just an off day for them as we eat there quite often. Jack Schat must have been rolling in his grave.

Geesh, I don’t even know where to start here. First off, I know Zack Schat(the owner) pretty darn well. I actually even used to work for him as a lead cook way back like 100 years ago). We have had our ups and downs over the years, but I’m assuming that we both respect each others achievements in the culinary world. Zach knows that I’ve been in this profession for over 20 years now and Ive seen it ALL. From dishwasher or prep cook to lead or manager, to sous chef to Executive chef.(heck I’ve even owned a restaurant), so my food industry experience definitely has influenced my opinions(on businesses) over the years. Ok, so that being said, my girlfriend and I had an unbelievably HORRIBLE experience there yesterday! So horrible, that it prompted me(after several years of contimplating) to start my own Unilocal account. I have NEVEREVER had such bad customer service neither has my girlfriend. We left agreeing that what this girl did, was what every owner would have as the exact model of «What to NEVER do/say to customers»!! So we walk in, and this girl«Crystal» greets us with a bland«Hey, can I get you guys sumthin? I ordered a full sized sandwich „The Hammer“(which btw I personally invented like 18 years ago and is STILL the biggest seller at all Schats locations.(don’t get me started about Zach and mine original agreement when he put the sandwich on the menu). haha! OK… sorry, back to the story… so I order the sando and my gf orders 2 small orange juices. So the girl starts out(in a rude voice) „Did you guys want us to split the sandwich for you?“ Me-„yes please“. Crystal-„„Well that will be a $ 1 charge“(while handing me my $ 5ish change from a $ 20. So about $ 15 for one sandwich and 2 drinks!!!) I said „no thanks we dont want to pay $ 1 for an extra plate.“ She then began to get even MORE rude in her tone. „Well Ive worked here over 1.5 years and EVERY place charges to split a plate!“ This is where it really started going downhill. I told her I’m very much aware of the „split plate“ charge the most places do, in fact I work in this biz also, in fact I’ve cooked in this very restaurant when it 1st opened etc. OK, then she said, „oh so your a cook eh? Well FYI we need a new cook here soooo bad!!! The cook sucks and our food is disgusting!!“ My gf and I simply looked at each other in amazement. We could not believe she just said that! Ok so the sandwich is ready and she is 20 feet away(and not busy) and instead of bringing it to us, she calls out my name and has me get up and walk over to get it. I ask.“oh what about the Orange juices?“ She looks at my like I’m crazy.“What orange juices??» I said«My GF ordered 2 sm OJ.» She insisted I was lying. She said«No you didn’t order those! And I said „how come I only got $ 5 change from one sando? And you never gave me a reciept or I could prove it.“ Then she almost got to yelling point saying, „YOU never asked for a receipt! And you guys only ordered one large OJ!!“(So it went from we didnt order ANY sm drinks, to now she says we did but it was one large, and telling me its my fault for not asking 4 a receipt etc». Then I ask, «well.now can I have the receipt?» She then angrily crumbles up some paper and dictates to me.“JUST grab the stupid juices!!!” **As if she knows I’m lying but is just so fed up of dealing w-me that her patience is thin and she is willing to just let me take 2 drinks for free. By the way, every other customer there had eyes as wide as you could imagine! She only got more rude and short. Basically turning her back on us and mumbling(but so we could hear) some words of disgust etc. SO, finally at that point I said, «I’m sorry can I get your 1st name? I’m so upset I’m probably going to give Zack a call and tell him about this whole incident.» She replied, «So what, go ahead and call Zack, I don’t care!» I said, «well I just might and fyi I’ve known Zack for a long time and he is a friend of mine.» She said.“oh yeah, well guess what, he is a friend of MINE too, and so go ahead and call him, I don’t care!” Finally this very sweet and caring person(Martha I believe her name was) came into the picture.(Apparently she was on her break out back during all of this). She asked Crystal to go outside on a break while she talked to my GF and I. She was very professional and had 1000 apologies etc. She offered to buy us something(anything) out of the deli etc. We didnt accept because we felt so awkward and the leftover energy was so uncomfortable, we just wanted to scarf down our sandwiches over our napkins(chose no split plate) and get out of there! This was seriously the worst customer service I’ve ever seen in my life. She was rude, accused us of lying, told us the food there was utterly disgusting(after we ordered), challenging me to call her boss, telling me why I didn’t ask for a receipt so therefore its MY error why I didn’t get my drinks.etc. By the way, we DID get the original receipt! *1 Full Sandwich and 2 small orange juices

Well, I thought that I’d already reviewed this place, a great example of what makes downtown Ukiah so nice. Run by an offshoot of the Schat’s in Bishop, CA, this is a great bakery and sandwich place, perfect for breakfast and lunch, in the heart of downtown Ukiah. It’s right across the street from the courthouse and has great sandwiches, bread, cookies, etc.
