Cathy Spencer – Gateway Insurance

Cathy and her staff do a wonderful job for their clients! I would recommend their services!

I used Gateway Insurance from 2008 until just last month, and don’t recommend them to anyone. I asked my broker, Lisa Garton, what my policy would look like if I changed my address to a different city, if I had to re-​register my car under that city, and if there was a different insurance company that they worked with that I could switch to that would allow my partner to drive my vehicle without having to pay a premium for him. Instead of answering my questions as hypotheticals, which they were, she instead processed the address change and processed a cancellation in my policy, this was on March 7^th. On March 10^th, she sent me an email telling me my policy had been cancelled for three days. Mind you, I had driven over that three-​day time that my policy was cancelled. At that moment, I responded back to her telling her to keep it cancelled, and then purchased insurance with Allstate online. On April 13^th, a month later, I received a packet of insurance information from Mercury, the company I worked with through Gateway. Turns out that they had just charged me on the 31^st of March $ 102.88 for my insurance, and were charging me again on April 14^th for $ 132.00 for another month of insurance. I immediately called Gateway angry, and asked to speak to anybody but Lisa Garton, because what insurance broker makes this kind of mistake. I was able to speak to Barbara Noll, who was very nice and was able to cancel the payment for April 14^th, and would help me get a refund for the $ 102.88. Barbara was very helpful, but this company is not a good company to work with. After some back and forth, she said that their underwriter required proof of my current insurance with Allstate in order to process my refund for the charge that was made on the 31^st. I sent them my paperwork from Allstate showing that I was covered by them from the 11^th of March until now. Because I wasn’t actually cancelled from the 7^th to the 11^th, and Lisa had read the information wrong and informed me that I was cancelled incorrectly, and changed my address without me confirming the change, I am not eligible for the full refund of $ 102.88, and instead will be getting roughly $ 80.00 of that $ 102.88 refund that I should be getting for somebody’s mistake.
All in all, this is 2015. You can buy insurance online, you don’t need a broker that will literally make you lose money. Don’t go with Gateway.
