This place has lots of candy and a good choice of ice cream. After eating 2 scoops of yummy ice cream, I bought some jalapeño peanut brittle. WOW is this stuff good!!! The interior is very old time decorated and fun to be in. The employees are all very good! I can’t wait to get back here again.

Always stop in here when in Virginia City. The fudge is okay, but only standard flavors which seem to be at all fudge counters — would be nice to expand a little — keep the«traditional» recipes but stretch a little — humbleberry, black cherry, orange creamsicle, even pistachio which is also common elsewhere. You’d have me taking a couple of pounds home! The reason we come here is the brittle(except jalapeño — didn’t find that too tasty) with any of the nuts they offer. If you do know what nut(s), try the mixed nuts brittle — perfect. The only issue is that the pre-bagged brittle was in small bags(smaller that a Zip-Loc sandwich bag). We asked the young lady behind the counter if she could break some bigger pieces from the bins on display, and she said she’d still have to break it small to fit the bags — apparently, there’s only one size(?!). After some back and forth a fudge box came into play, and it was perfect for large pieces of brittle. The attitude from the young lady was rather«snotty» however — a few of us in our group left so as to keep from biting our tongues off. Customer service isn’t what it used to be, I guess. .. but, the brittle is good, and this was the first bad experience we had(over many visits throughout the years). Will try on next visit — let’s see how things go that time. ..

I was going to give two stars, but the chocolate sprinkle dipped cone was fabulous. It’s hard for me to knock this place, because what I didn’t like isn’t really 100% their fault. However, they can improve and that’s what I hope will be a result of this review. It’s a bummer that this appears to be THE place for ice cream cones, yet what they serve isn’t homemade, but Dreyer’s. This wouldn’t be so horrible, except that it is the nastiest, freezer-burned Dreyer’s I’ve ever had. I got chocolate cookie dough, yet it tasted like a combination of mint chocolate chip, year-old frozen chicken, and freezer-flavored ice. It was truly gag-worthy. If this is the place where people get their ice cream cones and you pride yourself on your homemade cones, why for all that is holy, would you fill said cones with subpar ice cream? Red’s is an adorable place with truly delectable goodies. Either just forget the ice cream and sell your delicious fudge and rock candy, or get a better freezer and/or way to store the ice cream. It’s a bummer I wasted so many calories on ice cream that I tried not to taste when I could have had Cold Stone back in Reno Town.

BEWARE! Even though this business is a candy store and caters to a lot of children, my young son was scalded badly by hot water in hot chocolate. My son received second degree burns and had to be rushed to the E.R. Red’s needs to monitor the temperature of their hot water!

Red and his family were so nice. I loved this candy shop. Homemade yummy candy! The truffles were decident, and beautiful. The store was getting ready for the holidays, putting up lights and garland. It made for a cozy feeling. I would reccomend Reds to everyone. Top knotch!

There’s obviously no management on site, here. My aunt wanted a funnel cake. A bucket was brought out from under the sink. As the teenage boy with the«F*ck Yeah» bracelet attempted to stir the dough, our eyes widened. The substance seemed like concrete, but after a few minutes of beating it he declared it was ready. We watched as he poured a stream of dough into a vat of rust-colored oil. We asked when the last time the oil was changed, F-Yeah, said, «Not my job.» The cooking failed. He tried again. FY finally asked a co-worker what could be wrong… turns out he was using sugar cone dough instead of funnel cake dough… the buckets weren’t marked. We backpedaled and went with an ice cream cone, and I asked the young man if anyone had ever commented on his bracelet. He looked at me for a couple of seconds and said, «Yes, just yesterday.»

Sweet! No, literally — sweet! This is one of those nostalgic, come in and get your sugar buzz on places. Pick your sugar poison. Will it be a candied apple? A towering scoop of ice cream? A bucket of caramels? A flat of fattening fudge? Crave it, it’ll probably be here. Over the years, I’ve come here with tourists in tow, and no one ever leaves empty handed. Try to avoid coming here on a Saturday during the summer — it’ll most likely be mobbed. You never know who’ll be helping you, sometimes it’s doofus high school kids, like, who, like, you know, like, can’t, like, be, like, bothered.

This shop has a good old time feel to it. There are three sections of the small shop: the ice cream parlor, the snack section(offering hot dogs, corn dogs, nachos, etc.), and the candy shop. I got some ice cream in a sugar cone. It was pretty tasty. The staff was friendly and even the customers inside were so friendly. There are restrooms in the back to use if you took a long drive here to Virginia City. There are also a lot of tables to sit down and enjoy your ice cream or snack. The inside is an original old west building and it’s really amazing to see that it’s still standing. A must see in Virginia City.

On a recent visit to Virginia City, I made the unfortunate choice to take my family here to eat lunch. There was a simple mix-up with my order but the guys at the counter stared at me like I was speaking another language. The bratty kid at the counter actually told me to «leave him alone, that he was busy with other orders and to go away». When I asked to speak with a manager he stated that there wasn’t one on the premises and then«oh, you want to speak to my dad?». I can’t remember the last time I have been treated so poorly. And the food is nothing special… Frozen/reheated, tasteless crap. I will NEVER, EVER return here and I will tell everyone I know that this place is HORRID!!! Stay Away! I wish I could give negative stars…

Quaint. A bit pricey… Just Dreyers Ice Cream — none local. Daughter had caramel apple — caramel was bland as could be. The staff was barely interested in serving us — they were too busy paying attention to eachother. Just okay.

Visually this place is great, once you get past that its not so great. I got a mixed bag of salt water taffy, my gf got a bag of turtles chocolates, and an ice cream cone. The ice cream was okay but once we got home we realized the taffy was rock hard and the chocolates tasted ancient. The two teenagers working there were less than happy to help. I would never go back here.

BINGO! A perfect treat for the old western stroll down the boardwalk. Been here 2 times and both were delightful.

I got a caramel apple from here. The caramel was not tasty and the apple was too soft, like mushy. When I asked the guy behind the counter if the popcorn was fresh, he didn’t even look at me. He continued what he was doing and said«this morning.» I guess I gave them two stars because they had deep fried candy bars like at fairs. Maybe next time I’ll try one: /

I stopped at Red’s a few days ago while cycling through virginia city. There was a closed sign up at 11am but the front door was open so I headed in. There were no other customers inside and there was rap playing through the sound system. I asked if they were open, a young lady told me they were. I walked over to the counter to order some food and the guy there stared at me for a good 30 seconds without saying a word. I said hey to him and he turned and walked away without responding. The girl that was working came over from the other side of the store and took my order. As she was getting my food ready, the guy, I think his name was Curtis, was throwing boxes around complaining about how, «Nobody does SHIT in this place besides me, that’s why I can’t go home early». The girl kept calling him boss so I’d assume he’s a supervisor or manager. I took my food and ate outside, I won’t be heading back.

Fudge, lots and lots of FUDGE. They have all kinds of flavors and don’t mind giving you a sample or two :) they also have pre bagged candy all over the place. If you want it they just may have it. You can smell the sweet scent from down the road. Once you enter the store your eyes almost pop out of your head with excitement. I walked away spending a pretty penny but my sugar high feels well worth it.

We stopped for some ice cream during our Virginia City visit. I liked they offered both commerical ice cream but also ice cream«homemade» from a local Lake Tahoe dairy. Various eye appealing candies line the walls and counters and this store like many have lined the walls with local history. The employees were friendly and the prices were fair(priced for tourists). I’d go back :)

They also have some decently priced snacks here, including cheese fries(not on the menu, but you can request it!). Note that everything comes out of a microwave, but its still a cheap place to get a snack, especially if you have little ones and don’t feel like spending an arm and a leg!

The smell of sugar is overpowering and all encompassing as you walk through the doors. Sugar, Oh, Honey Honey. You are my candy girl, and you got me wanting you. Honey, Oh, Sugar, Sugar. You are my candy girl and you got me wanting you. If you are a candy girl(or guy), this is the place for you. If you are doing the tourist thing in Virginia City, this is the place to get your sugar fix. They’re an old fashioned candy shop with all the sugar your modern heart(or sweet tooth) craves. They also have sandwiches, drinks and some non-sugary snacks which you can of course follow up with some CANDY! Have fun and don’t forget your insulin.

Red’s is located in the heart of Virginia City, an old mining town turned tourist destination. The streetscape has been preserved with the original wood-slatted walkways, narrow thoroughfare, western victorian style buildings, and of course tons of ye-olde-west saloons, pubs, and most importantly, candy stores. I mean c’mon. What gun-toting silver-grubbing cowboy –wouldn’t– want some peanut brittle to chase down their sasparilla or ale? Certainly not me. Taken straight from their brochure: «Red’s Old Fashioned Candies is the oldest operating candy store & factory in Nevada. They make a wide variety of fudge, brittles, nut clusters, barks, turtles, english toffee, caramel, candy & cinnamon apples & some hard candies.» Anyway, Red’s has a delightful selection that is varied enough to please even the most discerning sweet-tooth. Some of their prime offerings include: — Fudge(in a variety of flavors) — Ice Cream with chocolate dipped waffle cones — Nut Brittle(macadamia, peanut, cashew, brazil nut) — Crystalized Hard Candies — Sandwiches and lunch snacks — Caramel Apples My personal favorite was the macadamia nut brittle. Delicious! If only they sold guns, knives and confederate flags their operation would be complete!
