Came into town to visit my parents nearby and wanted to get together with a friend for a nice dinner and The Depot definitely was a good place to go. There aren’t much options for some nice dining in Visalia, but this is well worth it. Built from an old train depot, hence the name, the restaurant is a nice traditional place with beautiful décor. The service is great and very attentive, but they might want to have their staff learn the menu fully. The chef should always walk the staff through everything on the menu so small questions could be answered quickly. As an appetizer, started out with the Salmon tartar which was nicely prepared and great mix of fresh avocado. It was light and definitely got the night started. As my main course, I had the boneless ribeye special on their menu in a blue rare(which they had to confirm if they could do) and it was actually done perfectly! The steak had the perfect sear and was nice and red all through the center the way I like it, preserving all the natural juices of the meat. I had a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio on the menu which is nice and extensive as well. Definitely a nice dining experience in Visalia!

This was my second time dining here and I was just as impressed this time as I was during my last. My husband and I made Valentine’s Day reservations, and were immediately seated by a very warm and friendly hostess. Our waitress was completely on top of her game. She recommended a lovely bottle of champagne, and made sure our glasses were never half empty. Our entire meal was simply amazing. We started with the Brie appetizer which was heaven in our mouths. We both had the tomato bisque, so creamy, and comforting! I ordered the filet mignon, and it literally melted in my mouth. Unbelievably tender. My husband had the steak and lobster, and made mmmm noises throughout his meal. We split their classic vanilla crème brûlée and it did not disappoint. Every bite was something special. The elegant detail shown with the presentation of each course also added a very lovely touch to our night out. We cannot wait to go back for our next special occasion and treat our tummies.

Took over an hour to get our food plus the male waiter was not very friendly. The duck was very undercooked. Won’t go back.

This restaurant is under somewhat of new ownership, so a lot of these not so favorable reviews are based on the prior owner/operation.

Tonight we stopped in for a quick drink. Didn’t quite know what we wanted and asked the server behind the bar for some suggestions. She had great questions leading us to our choice. I had an excellent Bourbon Smash. I always love this place. The atmosphere, people, etc! Join their mailing list and get the best invites for fun dinners with drink pairings!

I have been to this restaurant several times primarily while on business. The service is always friendly and courteous. I like the ambiance and the theme of the restaurant(old train station) is pretty cool. However, it’s the kitchen that lets this place down. I’m not a fan of their steaks and I guess I shouldn’t really order oysters that far from the ocean. Overall, the quality of the cooking lets this place down. I would expect better based on the premium prices they charge in this establishment.

My wife and I had a poor experience at The Depot when we went for our anniversary during an extremely busy evening. The owner personally called me to apologize and invite me back. We accepted his offer and the service and food was exceptional. We will definitely be going back. If you are looking for a great dining experience in Visalia, the Depot is on the short list of places to go.

Love the ambiance! We were greeted by the hostess who took our coats and brought us to our table. We order the smoked Bree appetizer, French onion soup, clam chowder, and the Rosemary chicken. The smoked Bree was heavenly and so was everything else. We were honestly stuffed after the appetizer and soups. But we still had to try the chicken. Our glasses were never empty. Great experience! We can’t wait to be back.

Had a wonderful dinner here tonight! We started with bacon wrapped dates, crispy Monterey Bay calamari, and grilled slab bacon for appetizers. We had The Depot French dip and the 612 Room burger for our main dishes. We had chocolate mousse cake and cheesecake for dessert. We had a Southern Belle and a traditional martini for our drinks. Delicious is a complete understatement! Everything was soooooo good tonight and has been every time I’ve visited. Like any other time, our waiter was very attentive and kind. Yummmmmm!

This place js a sleeper! That means it looks good but the food is AWESOME! I have lived in Paris, France, and the chef here is better than most chefs in France! And he uses French brazing and saucing methods! I had the special of the day which was a White Fish, scalloped potatoes, and thinly sliced Zucchini and yellow squash in a light lemon butter frazie. Save yourself the air fare and don’t go to Paris. But tell the amazing Chef thanks… for you, and again for me!

Because of the history I wanted to try one more time… mistake. Maybe I don’t know what The Depot’s signature dish is. I can tell you what isn’t, steak. Steak 101, tenderize it. Service was acceptable but should of been off the charts considering know one else was there. This used to be one of the top restaurants in Visalia… i’m afraid they wont be around for long unless changes are made which is really sad.

What a fun experience! I am a frequent of downtown restaurants and decided to try The Depot with a friend of mine. We were pleasantly greeted at the door and asked to sit in the lounge area. The staff was extremely friendly and recommended a commonly liked appetizer, the warm Brie, and to our surprise it was amazing! The atmosphere was casually fun and our dinners were cooked to perfection. Hers– the salmon and mine– bacon wrapped filet.

Decided to try this establishment while traveling. First impression. Walk in and there is no one to greet you, hostess appears from bar area and we are seated in a spot where there is a huge spider and web. She offers to get something to kill it I ask to be moved to another table. It’s a Friday night and not busy at 6:00pm. Ordered New York steak, side of gratin potatoes and salad. Potatoes was dry and not really any taste(only took a bite), steak was ok. See no reason why I would be back here.

My wife and I went out for an early mothers day celebration. It was our first time dining at the depot and we were delighted. From the moment we walked in and we’re greeted it was a terrific experience. They start you off with the drink list and bread and then bring you the menu, which is not very big maybe only 20 items on it. My wife ordered the bacon wrapped filet mignon(medium well) which comes with a salad(we both had the chopped) twice baked potato and some veggies and I ordered the rib eye(medium rare) which comes with the same as hers. The chopped salad was one of our favorite salads ever it looks small but fills you up. Both of our steaks were cooked to perfection and we’re the BEST steaks we have ever had and we go to steak house all over. After our meal the waitress brought us some complimentary cotton candy which was delicious but hard to finish because we were so full from our meal.

Visited on a Monday evening and had a very pleasant meal! We were seated in an almost completely empty room(minus one other couple in the room and a large party next door). We were handed only a wine menu and left to our own devices for a few minutes. Ordered our wine and we’re finally given a menu and read off the specials of the day. We selected the calamari(small portion that looked to be fried too long), the warmed Brie appetizer(EXCELLENT!), and a HALF dozen oysters on the half shell(he brought out the FULL dozen but I didn’t correct him before I dug in and ate the whole dozen for $ 36(!!)). I wish he was more attentive to our wine glasses and left us to pour our own refills(which I wouldn’t usually mind but it was a red and we had a nice white table cloth). Next we had our salads. I had the regular house salad. I don’t know WHAT kind of dressing was used, but the greens were HEAVILY salted for some weird reason. I had a few bites before I quit the dish. Next, our main course: a rare filet mignon with potatoes gratin and brocolini(cooked to perfection). I had the veal chop special with a side of brocolini and mashed potatoes. This was AMAZING! I finished with a crème brûlée and my friend and espresso. Both were perfect. All in all, I would most definitely return for a romantic evening out with my husband or would highly suggest this as a venue for a nice get together. One star withheld for the little minor things!

Stay away from the Lobster! Went there on 1÷13÷15 with a party of 6. Four of us ordered Lobster. A strong ammonia taste had two of us sending our plates right back to the kitchen. The third person ate it and was sick by midnight. Ammonia smell or taste indicates the lobster is spoiled. Appetizers and salads were great. Disappointing that a restaurant of this caliber would allow rotten food to pass through the kitchen. Won’t be coming back. Ever.

Service was great. And I highly recommend the lamb t-bone. Use it’s pricey but well worth it. U get what you pay for. The oysters were great! And the manager and servers were very attentive. If you go here, go expecting to enjoy a nice dinner, not a fast dinner. If you want fast go to McDonald’s

This is not the Depot I remember. Went for lunch today for my birthday and the menu was missing good stuff they used to have like the New York steak sandwich. 4.75 for a lemonade AND they charged a desert fee of 3.50 a person for a cake we brought in and cut at the table, they only supplied the plates and forks. Do NOT go here.

Coming in after a weekend at Huntington Lake, we were pretty under dressed but everyone at the Depot was extremely hospitable. My friends and I all ordered the french dip at the bar, the locally grown beef did not disappoint. It was actually one of the best french dips I have ever eaten. Quality you can taste. Travlers! Do not pass up, get your local, fresh food fix here and get back on the road. Great food, friendly service, stiff drinks. I will come back again!
