Tired of the tourist traps, I sought out a local joint. Cool café vibe with all the youth of Maui on tap. I had a tuna sandwich with chips and a juice. Sat outside and they called my number. Great sandwich made fresh and all organic down to the cups. Off the strip, but that is where all the best places are.

Great place for drinks. Good selection of wine to choose from. Food prices are reasonable.

Best and Coolest Coffee Shop on Maui This is everything a cool coffee shop should be. This place has added so much vibes to Market Street. Thanks guys! Cutting edge musicians chill there. It’s a great place for real rock stars to show up incognito and steal some hot local riff. Stone cold chillin’

YEAH! Tasty and Healthy dining in Wailuku. Had a great Lunch here on the 4th of July, Dining Al Fresco in the patio. I had a yummy Pita Pizza with mozzarella cheese striped with red roasted bell peppers, zucchini, and green pesto. My husband had the magaherite sandwich. We shared, and everything was delicious. Each lunch was $ 9.50 but came with a mixed green side salad, making it a pretty good deal. Most items were in the $ 9 – 9.50 range. On previous occasions I have had their dolmas appetizer which is great and comes with fresh squeeze lemon. The hummus and warm pitas are delicious with garlicy goodness as are the mediterranean tacos(pitas and hummus and veggies). I had the turkey and cranberry sandwich and that was yummy. Do you see a pattern here? I haven’t found anything I don’t like. Like Chocolate? Try the ganache chocolate cake. It is rich and sinful. They have wines and cheese platters in addition to full coffee and expresso service but I come here for the healthy food.

Sometimes you find good things when you least expect them — in my case, a latte on the seen-better-days-but-coming-around Market Street in Wailuku. A little sunburned and tired, I needed something to perk me up while waiting for the boyfriend pouring through the record selection next door at Requests. Call me crazy, but a hot latte sounded great. Quickly greeted and served, I didn’t have to wait long for my coffee to appear. The espresso had a slightly burned edge to it, but the milk was foamed just right and a quick swirl of Maui-grown brown sugar was all it needed to enter the realm of perfection. Given the lack of quality espresso options nearby, I’d definitely make Mark Aurel a regular visit. I visited mid-afternoon on a Sunday and the café was deserted — signs for live music and evening specials indicated that things would pick up later in the day, and wine tastings and a general laid-back atmosphere make me wish that this café were only around the corner from my house.

Café Mark Aurel is a little spot in Wailuku with some of the best wine selections in the area. I happened in there one afternoon & enjoyed a light lunch, but what drew me back later in the week was an impromptu meet-up with new friends for wine & a cheese platter. I’m not sure of the owner’s culinary certifications, but at the time, he was conducting wine classes, and wine pairing classes on site throughout the week. The atmosphere is charming with it’s use of darker paint colors & rich artwork. Walking in, you think you are going to spend a lot of money, but you would have to make a grand effort. It’s group-friendly & open air. If you buy a bottle of wine, but don’t finish the whole thing, they will recork & save it for you sans any extra charge. Also throughout each week, they do open mic nights & poetry readings. It’s a great place to plug into the community. As with most things in Hawaii, casual & low-key is the dress & mood. This place also offers a newsletter that you can sign up for via e-mail. Hali or Kama’iana — makes no difference — go into Café Mark Aurel’s!
