CPS Computers is an unscrupulous business. While I did business with CPS Computers a long time ago, I dealt directly with the owner, Jim Winn, and he is still listed as the owner. I gave Mr. Winn an exact specification for a computer that I wanted him to build for me. When I picked up the computer that he had built for me, I was surprised to find that he had installed a different motherboard than what I had specified. Mr. Winn told me at the time that the motherboard that he had installed was newer and had better features. I had no reason to doubt him at the time. Later, however, I learned that his statement was incorrect. The Asus P4S8X, the motherboard I specified, had(at the time) a brand new chipset, was more powerful, more versatile, and could be upgraded farther into the future, while the motherboard Mr. Winn installed(Asus P4S533-E) was approaching the end of its product life. This was reflected in the fact that the motherboard he installed(P4S533-E) was substantially less costly than the one I specified in writing, and he agreed to install(P4S8X). When I first starting using the computer he had built for me, I experienced problems with it. I could not get the onboard audio to operate properly or consistently. The overriding problem, however, which made the computer unusable, was that, while moving the mouse, the computer would suddenly, and with no apparent reason, freeze up, unable to accept any input from either the mouse or keyboard. At this point, I would have to reboot the computer, losing any work that had not been saved since the last reboot. This event occurred with even greater frequency whenever the modem was in use. I could no longer productively use the computer. When I took the computer back to Mr. Winn and explained the problems I was having, he failed to determine the cause of the problems or remedy them in any way. His explanation that the problems were a result of not installing the Windows XP drivers correctly seemed dubious to me. Mr. Winn refused to fix the problems and told me that he no longer wanted to do business with me. The $ 800.00 computer that I had bought from CPS Computers was completely useless. At this point I paid for another computer, which I bought from Dell. Several years later, a friend of mine, whom I explained the problem to, was able to diagnose and fix the problems with the defective computer that I had bought from CPS Computers. My friend told me that the power supply that was installed in the computer by CPS Computers was«gerbil powered,» and did not meet the specifications of the motherboard. Mr. Winn had not only nickel-and-dimed me with the motherboard, but with the power supply as well. I was able to get the computer working properly by replacing the power supply with one that met the specifications of the motherboard; however, by this time, it was too late. I had no use for the computer at this point and gave it to my friend. I would definitely stay away from CPS Computers.
