Food Express Pizza & Deli at Via Latina

I have long loved the sandwiches at Via Latina. Even so, when they started offering pizza, I wasn’t expecting much more than just another pizza joint. Man, was I wrong! The pizza is… amazing. The crust is thin but chewy and the toppings are outstanding. So far, I’ve had the wild mushroom & asiago pizza and the andouille sausage pizza. Both had delicious, high-​quality ingredients and were baked just right. I can’t wait to try more!
PS Not to give the sandwiches short shrift: they’re made with good, fresh cold cuts & nice rolls, and are quite large (big enough for 2 lunches). My favorite is the North Station a.k.a. muffaletta. Best muffaletta around – well, this far north, anyway!

I love food. I do a lot of my own baking and understand the process of making dough better than most. One of my greatest frustrations about living in Waltham is finding the right crust. There’s good pizza. There’s even great pizza. But then you walk into Food Express and discover the Holy Grail of PIZZA! They call it «artisan pizza», I call it Neapolitan Nirvana. The dough is made in house and once you sink your teeth into that first slice and you know you’re getting quality. First thing I noticed was this dough is not just some grocery store flour based dough. It’s a blend of the finest hard wheat. The next difference is the sauce. Chain pizzerias and most of the Mom & Pops around here spread a sugary sauce atop the dough. At Food Express you get dollops of a real tomato based sauce which probably required no added sugar (the owner won’t say one way or the other). Last, but certainly not least, is the quality of the cheeses which finish this pie off nicely — not too greasy and certainly not some processed cheese which leaves a reservoir of oil on the pie. If you base your pizza decisions on my other favorite — Stella’s in Watertown — then Food Express Pizza & Deli should be your next stop!
