Ordered scrod with spinach, crab, scallops and olives. The scallops were salty and the fish tasted bad. I should have returned it. The sides they give you are good– but very small about 2 oz– are you kidding. No value there. My husband got sesame chicken which was very spicy– they should have asked the customer if they wanted it mild. The chicken soup was very salty. The food in general did not taste fresh– very disappointed. I will go to another restaurant next time. The waitress was ok. Do not waist your time here– gone down hill! I threw out my fish when I got home– not wanting anyone to get sick!!! omg!

For a newbie, at first I felt a little unwelcome. the place is full of blue hairs that seem to never leave… and for a short spell I was ignored. But it wasn’t awful. BUT, so what. The food is great… the selection is almost too much. I wish I was in town longer, I would eat there all the time… the blue hairs are old, not stupid.

The food and service are always good. The menu has plenty of choices for everyone. We dine at GFI often and are consistently satisfied.

I’ve been there 3 times. I wanted to like this place because I see how busy it is and people always say how good it is. I have had nothing but bad service(takes forever to get food and staff was rude) and bad food. It’s dark and the carpeting looks dirty. My glass and silverware was dirty as well had to ask for new set(then the attitude came from the server). Our apps were cold, and I had ordered fish which was very dry and my sides were cold. So, I’m done with this place not worth the aggrevation!

Comfortable atmosphere and welcoming staff. They were very accommodating to food allergies. Draft list is better than most. I’ll be back again.

I don’t think we will be reading much about this place on Unilocal in 6 months… horrendous… went for New Years dinner… after an hour and a half we left without eating because we had to return our meals twice… we only got the first meal because we hailed another waitress after our first one never came back… we have been there countless times but pretty sure it is hitting rock bottom… awful…

Half lobster roll, 2 stuffies, and a cup of sweet corn chowder for 10.79 + tip. Also bread: was quite good. Impressive quantity of lobster meat. This is good solid Rhode Island eating.

The best french onion soup I have ever have. The baked stuff shrimp is outstanding! The scene is a little old but who cares you get tons of food for the money you pay.

I don’t usually eat here. It is mostly an older crowd. My grandfather is in town and wanted to eat here. It is so cold I am freezing my nips off. Food is good, enormous portions. I will be eating this chicken cutlet for two days.

I would have liked to provide a better review because our service was so good but the food just didn’t match the service.

Very good food, service fine. The neighborhood restaurant that still exists should you look for one. Recommend their house favorite, Prime Rib, cooked to perfection, always. If you want to know«Where’s the beef?» Governor Francis Farm is where to go!

Great selection of food, reasonably priced, friendly service. If you want a simple meal that’s close to home, this is a solid choice. I always get the Veal Parmigana, and just tried their spicy chorizo soup and that was delicious!

Never a disappointment! Been going here for years(10+) They have consistency. We usually order their baked scrod, stuffed mushrooms, chicken parm and mozz sticks. The stuffed mushrooms are the best I’ve ever had!

My fiancé and I went here for lunch because of a gif certificate that she had received for some volunteer work. The service was friendly and the food was cheap. Price is very important to me, as I have been hosed by places in the past with high prices and low quality food. They have a terrific lunch specials menu with most meals under $ 10. Included with your entrée is soup/salad, a starch, and a vegetable. Portions are standard sized, but you really do get a lot of food. I had the stuffed scrod(spinach, rice, etc.), over a parmesan cheese sauce. Very good! It’s homestyle, so you’re not getting everything fresh or made-to-order, but you know that going in. There were a lot of elderly people in there for lunch(cheap!) and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. I would go back if I was in the area again, great variety!

Reasonably decent food, reasonable service and experience. I have come here twice, although neither occasion was by my own accords. The food was good and the portion sizes were fair. Service was a little slow on both occasions — one was understandable, being a holiday, but the other was a pretty ordinary day. Governor Francis Inn feels quaint on the inside, but it’s just missing something. This restaurant is great to take your extended family to: the type of place that won’t offend anyone because the menu is so varied. Unfortunately this means Governor Francis is unlikely to make an impression. The food prices trend a little higher than might be expected from the exterior; however, the portion sizes are pretty fair for the prices.

May 3, 2014 When it comes to doing restaurant reviews, Mom and I each play a different part. I write the review, take the pictures and post them online. Mom has the more important role — finding a place to eat. She sits in front of the computer(or the TV when the Phantom Gourmet is on) doing her research and trying to find«us» kind of places. When she read about Governor Francis Inn, she said it had«us» written all over it. She was right. We arrived at the restaurant just in time to see a group of senior ladies heading out to the parking lot with their leftovers. I looked at Mom and she said, «I told you.» You see, we love places like that. I know we should like to visit fancier establishments with small plates and sushi and a chef’s menu, but that’s not us. Wherever the grandmas go, that’s where we want to be because that’s where the good food is. Remember, Grandma’s on a fixed income. She doesn’t have money to waste. She wants quality and so do we. We were quickly greeted by a host and shown to an old fashioned, high back booth. We loved it already. Our waitress — Lynda — arrived to take our drink order. In case I forget to mention it, I want to point out that Lynda was absolutely fantastic. She was friendly, funny and seemed to know every customer in the restaurant. As we sipped our Diet Cokes($ 2.25 each) we perused the vast menu. There is definitely something for everyone at Governor Francis. After narrowing down our potential choices, Mom decided on the cheese ravioli with meatballs($ 12.99) and I went with the chicken milano with my choice of linguini($ 12.99). The meals came with soup or salad, so we both decided to substitute a regular garden salad for a caesar($ 1 each). Lynda brought us a basket of bread to munch on while we waited. Mom had read online that some people suggested the possibility of Governor Francis Inn getting a makeover because they feel it is a bit outdated. However, we love coming to places where the reviews online start out with«I used to come here with my parents when I was a kid.» Governor Francis Inn is the kind of place that — if you were a frequent visitor back in the day — you’ll always have fond memories of. Oh yeah, and I heard the food was amazing. On that note, our food arrived quickly and was steaming hot. The smell of the Italian sauce on both of our dishes was intoxicating. Mom’s cheese raviolis were stuffed — but not overstuffed — with creamy cheese and the meatballs were thick and had a hearty taste. You could tell that they were homemade because they just fell apart with the fork. Mom could also tell that the sauce was homemade because you could see chunks of onion scattered throughout. She loved everything and the portions — her dish and mine — were large, but not ridiculous. My chicken milano was a breaded breast topped with provolone cheese, roasted red peppers and mushrooms. It was fantastic! I ate every bit of that chicken, which had a beautiful white color inside and was cooked perfectly. The veggies on top were fresh and the cheese was delicious. The pasta was also good, although I’m not a huge fan of noodles.(I prefer stuffed pasta.) Everything was wonderful. Mom spotted the lemon meringue pie($ 5) on the dessert menu earlier, so we decided to split a piece. It was definitely the perfect way to end the meal. The citrus tasted cooled down our hot bellies and we just love the texture of the soft meringue. Our total came to $ 40.47. A side note: Mom and I used the ladies’ room before leaving and I have to say it was one of the cleanest and freshest smelling restrooms we’d ever used. Between Lynda’s excellent service, the fabulous food and the clean and welcoming environment, we can see why people have been flocking to Governor Francis Inn for years. We started talking about a return trip while we were still in the parking lot. If you’re into trendy places, this might not be for you. However, if you’re looking for a good home cooked meal, Governor Francis Inn is waiting. Visit for more tasty reviews from Southern New England!

Good food but rather slow service. We had the combo appetizer(chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, potato skins) and I had the Delmonico steak sandwich for dinner. Comes with a soup/salad and a side, I got mashed potatoes. They have a zinfandel vinaigrette dressing which was interesting! Tasted like raspberry vinaigrette but more tart. We’ve been going here for years when in town, though, and usually the food and service is good.
