We were looking forward to this place due to the great reviews. Walked in ask if we could sit outside and was told no problem. Someone promptly brought water. We waited 10– 15 minutes and nobody returned to check on us or take an order. I will also say the place was not busy. We left and ordered some great Chinese food around the corner

Extremely fresh and flavorful. The roasted pumpkin appetizer and the tomato-feta-mint salad were the perfect light dinner on a warm evening. Beautiful, unpretentious food — I will return next time I’m in DC.

Its IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIght. I’ve had the same to better quality at other places for cheaper(this is on the more expensive side of the $$ sign.) The ambiance is nice though, its like a little luxurious little spot in the middle of this seemingly run down building.

OK, not great. They were out of the meatballs from their menu, which is why I downgraded them.

This place is pretty bomb. Good service, good food. Kafta kebab was a flavor explosion. I was surprised at how good it was. The rice was crazy good too. Saffron with red sauce. Rice is not normally something people write home about but in this case Afghan grill is killing it! My only regret is not going all in with a yogurt side and bread. Next time!

Perhaps a bit spendy considering the food involved, but their consistent quality in an otherwise touristy and terrible area should be commended.

The food was good, but not great. Service was attentive. The atmosphere was okay. The bathrooms were in a different part of the building and sketch. The sampler appetizer was the best part. The lamb kabobs were. Well, nothing special.

This place was great. The food was a tad spicy for my taste but had great flavor. I tried a lamb dish the waiter recommended and was very satisfied. The waitstaff was extremely accommodating for my gluten free needs and I had no cross-contamination issues.

Delicious food, good and quick service and small cozy atmosphere without being pretentious; a perfect place for a date. You have to try the mantoo, steamed dumplings soaked into yummy white yogurt dip topped with tomato sauce; amazing! The appetizer sampler is a great choice to start if you are looking to taste a little bit of everything. The afghan salad has a strong minty-sour taste that I enjoyed and it is a simple salad that pairs well with the rest of the menu. My favourite dish was the chicken Kebob plate. I can’t wait to go back to this restaurant!!!

The lamb kabobs were delicious, well seasoned and cooked just right. Definitely ask for bread — it’s tasty and the green dipping sauce that comes with it(cilantro, jalapeño, oil, vinegar, herbs) is absolutely amazing.

In town for a conference. Stumbled upon this place across the street. Incredibly good food and service. I had the combination kabob plate — chicken, lamb, and beef, and could not be me pleased. Everything was spiced perfectly and very flavorful, including the cilantro-jalapeño dipping sauce for the Afghan bread. If I’m ever back in the area I will be back for sure.

My first time to Afghan Grill– delicious food, polite accommodating service and a very pleasant atmosphere. The bread dipping sauce was a perfectly fresh, tart combination of minced cilantro and garlic in a lemon oil. So good I put it on my lamb too!

It’s a small restaurant in Woodley Park. What I really like is that you can get many of the entrees also in(smaller) appetizer form so if you’re curious or undecisive you have options. Personal favorites include the kadu bouranee, which is pumpkin with meat sauce, and the chicken kebob, which have a nice touch of heat and a pleasant charcoal crispness. I’ve eaten at the restaurant and service was fine. I also ordered from them last night through Eat 24 and they got the food to me in under 25 minutes, still steaming hot. I almost hesitate to mention that because it’s such an impossible standard for anyone to maintain(even Dominoes) but to me it shows that they do care about their customers and food quality. This place is probably more of a four overall since we’re not talking innovative high cuisine, but they’ve always treated me so well, and the food is good enough, that I’m fine bumping them. I look forward to eating there and ordering from them more in the future.

I hadn’t been back here in 5 years but I had such fond memories of it that I wanted to bring my husband. It wasn’t as good as I remembered it; perhaps I didn’t order well or something has changed. The appetizers we ordered were great but the entrees were just okay. Overall, for the price it just isn’t worth it.

I’ve eaten Afgan food for many years in Afghanistan. Generally speaking, Afghan food is really good when done right. This restaurant just doesn’t cut it. My origin is Asian, which means I am passionate about rice. When I am served old rice I am offended. The Qabili was made with old rice, probably cooked earlier in the day and kept in a warm place. You can smell it as you eat. Sadly, I couldnt finish it. The bread was old as well. Reheated. Dry. I have never tasted bread like that in Afghanistan. I give it one star for the two things that was done at least to what one would expect: Bulanee and Firnee ;)

After a day off walking around D.C., catching a D.C. United match and walking all the way back to the Jefferson monument, I needed something nice to eat and the Afghan Grill sounded like a great idea even though it was far away from where I decided it was time for dinner. It is a block away from the Woodley Park metro station on the Red Line. The settings are relatively casual and the staff are friendly. To start off my dinner, I ordered the Aush — a hearty soup of noodles and vegetables. It tasted great on a day where I had to go buy a hoodie because of the dropping temperatures. I then ordered their version of the Qabili Pilao — a medley of well flavored rice and raisins and julienned carrots served with curried lamb. It was tasty and fragrant. I then ordered the Kofta Kebab and it was tender and juicy. It was served on top of fragrant rice with a side of a simple salad. To round off the dinner I had the firni — a rose and saffron flavored rice pudding garnished with powdered almonds. It tasted amazing. The funny thing that happens to me at restaurants happened here too — as I ordered multiple entrées, the waiter gave me the all too familiar«are you sure?» look. I get it people, you are supposed to seem concerned about me, But I am 29 and eating two entrées for dinner is what I do. Chill, man. I got this.

the food was totally delicious and the service was friendly and helpful and I want to give them five stars but I can’t because it’s really wheelchair inaccessible. There’s a short flight of steps to get into the restaurant, and another flight of steps upstairs to get to the bathroom! The red wine was delicious and dry and went really well with the food.

This is one of my all time favorite places near Woodley Park, DC for some really tasty and authentic food! It is a small restaurant but the food here really beats all of the nitty gritty issues of this place. I would highly recommend the Mando — the steamed dumpling with a afghani gravy on top! Also try any of the afghani kebob entrees– you wont go wrong! I recently tried the Eggplant entrée(with chicken instead of the lamb) which comes with rice and it was great! Definitely worth trying!

I was in the Woodley Park area for a conference a few weeks ago, and desperately seeking yummy food(not conference food). Having lived in DC some 10 years ago, I knew that ethnic food in this area was plentiful. I used trusty Unilocal to steer me to the Afghan Grill. Oh, buddy, it did not disappoint. The dining area is small(hey, it’s DC… most places are tiny). I was seated right next to the door. Each person coming in apologized for wafting my paper tablecloth into the air. Just a small annoyance. So if you dine here, stay clear of the door. Everything on the menu looked so soooo yummy. I’m a sometimes meat eater, and today I knew I didn’t want dead flesh interfering with the spices of Afghanistan. I chose the Badenjan Chalao. This is a tomato-y, eggplant dish. Very saucy. Nice and spicy. It is served with rice, a nice texture addition. They will also serve it with lamb for an additional $ 1.05. I loved every last bite my stomach could squeeze in. Oh, yes, the portion size was plenty. I wished I hadn’t gone nutz-o over the delicious bread they served at first. Service was prompt through the entire meal. There were a few other tables, couples, a big group and a few others also eating by themselves. I saw two servers. They were pretty on top of it. Five stars awarded, because weeks later I am still thinking about my meal.

Having now eaten in as well as taken out, I feel the same way as I did before. The spinach dish I tried this time was tasty, but no less salty than the other dish I’d tried, which is to say it felt like I could have thrown some spinach on my front steps to keep them from icing up. Eating in, it seemed that there was only one or two people working the floor, and often no one was out front, meaning we waited longer than I would have liked for water(important, given the salt factor) and our check. And the bill for a hardly excessive evening from three lightweights cracked $ 100 this time. They’re nice enough people, but it just isn’t worth it.
