I LOVE Douglas stores, the Dupont one included. Yes, they are a little smaller than say a Sephora or an Ulta, but it means you get really individualized attention when you’re looking for something specific. These stores are very popular in Europe, so once in awhile you’ll come across adventurous-looking treats that wouldn’t find in American retail chains. In particular, they have a great assortment of anti-wrinkle creams and other skin care products. That’s mainly what I go here for. They also have a great assortment of nailpolishes. Be sure to check this one out if you’re ever shopping in the Dupont Circle area!

German Expansion in the USA dachte ich…

My impression of Douglas has improved since it’s been taken over by Blue Mercury. More smaller brands are available, and I just came from a very pleasant, non-pushy Chanel makeover session with Tiffany. She didn’t shove products down my throat — in fact, we barely talked about the condition of my skin or the products she was using. I got the impression she’d have plenty of recommendations if I asked, but otherwise was happy to just spruce me up. The Eastern bloc types that work the register can be a bit frosty, but who cares. There is a very nice German woman who loves to chat. She makes up for the others. Lastly, get samples — they keep all the little jars behind the register, so just bring them what you want. It’s a great way to drive before you buy.

Helpful staff, well-organized selection of body products, a lot of the latest nail polish shades. The two women working when I was there, were pretty sleek and informed. I like Sephora too, but the vibe at Sephora is more«fun» whereas this is more polished. I definitely enjoyed shopping here even though I’m no cosmetics junkie, and will go back in future.

I walked in to get some refreshing makeup removing face wipes(ideal for long flights, car rides, etc.) The staff was extremely helpful, in particular the German lady who helped me. She helped me choose what I was looking for, then proceeded to do my makeup. Maybe she was bored, but she did my foundation, blush, lipliner and lip gloss, gave me some tips about applying it, but didn’t try to push any of it on me. Just did my makeup and sent me on my way with the purchase I came in for!

Horrible experience there! My friend and I took a walk on our lunch break and stopped by the store to browse.(We were dressed professionally in suits, having just come from our office – we definitely didn’t look like bums.) My friend was looking at a display filled with glass containers of bubble bath, when one slipped out of her hand and fell to the floor, shattering. There was glass everywhere. Luckily, she wasn’t hurt. The saleswoman, who had been hovering by the rear counter approached briskly, with hands on her hips. She clearly looked annoyed. My friend was embarrassed for dropping and breaking the product and immediately apologized to the saleswoman. The woman continued to glare at her and didn’t even ask if she was okay or if she had gotten hurt. «Aren’t you going to ask me if I’m okay,» my friend asked incredulously. The woman responded with a huge ‘ol dose of attitude telling her that she should have been more careful. I had a few products in my hand that I was planning to buy. Seeing that, I threw the products down and we both left the store. Douglas isn’t worth the money – not if they treat their customers that way.

You’ve probably walked by this store a bunch of times and not even noticed it. It kind of just looks like a generic, small store selling cheapo stuff. I’ll admit that I probably would never have set foot in this store had I not spotted the«Clinique Bonus!» sign in front of their store while trekking down Connecticut. Having scraped the bottom of my beloved Clinique moisturizer just that morning(and no, of course not the Dramatically Different one, that one is terrible and I don’t believe for a second that one sells every four seconds), I stopped in to pick a new one up. The store is small, but it has a wide array of Clinique products, as well as perfumes and colognes, Chanel and Lancome makeup, and possibly Estee Lauder products too — I can’t quite remember. They’ve got a selection of makeup brushes and other such items, though it’s on the small side and I was disappointed that they didn’t have the size liner brush I wanted. They’ve also got a good selection of manicure tools and nail polishes, including OPI and Essie. The saleswoman greeted me when I came in, but let me browse until I approached her with a question. She searched the whole store for the brush I wanted and never tried to force me to buy a different size in its place. I also saw her and the other clerk with other customers and they always seemed to be helpful and pleasant. When I walked up to the unmanned register, I didn’t have to wait at all for one of them to come ring me up. This place obviously doesn’t have the selection of Sephora or a department store, but its location makes it incredibly convenient to get a specific item, or to try on a few new shades of lip gloss on your lunch break. That convenience and the friendly saleswomen earned it three stars, and I had to tack on the fourth bc there was the Clinique bonus available.
