Peruvian Connection

If you can shop at their brick and mortar stores — fine. However, the online return pricing is out of step with other retailers as they not only charge you $ 7.95 return postage — but deduct the original $ 13.95 initial shipping — a fact that does not appear on the «convenient and easy returns» paperwork.
Obviously their online business is an afterthought and you can do business with better online retailers.

Some of the clothes are really wonderful and worth the high price. The store is lovely.
However, on my last visit there was urban music playing much too loud. Two of the staff were on the phone chatting. Another group of them were having a loud conversation in the middle of the store. I left quickly without trying on a lovely expensive dress. I would buy by mail but their sizes are too quirky and the shipping fees too high.

Peruvian connection has had incredible fashion (on paper/​webpage) but quality terribly deteriorated over the years while prices went up (definitive disaster since some clothes Made in China, overpriced, of course).
I rarely buy anything anymore, unless I have «urge»…
My latest experience is following: I bought 3 hand crochet dresses, 1 had to returned immediately, 2 others are keeper because «these are beauty»…however believe or not both have so many, I mean so many (tens of dozens) running threads and holes… it is my 3^rd weekend sitting at the window and finishing crocheting and repairing these holes… so, my conclusion, if quality and money is not the issue, shop for Peruvian connection fashion.

I purchased the canvas tote for $ 159. I love the style because it is very basic/​plain. However, the handle is almost too small for your hand to fit through. The shoulder strap is too narrow and too short. To be called a ‘tote’ it is a bit small. The suede handle has raw unfinished edges. The price is typical for Peruvian Connection — way overpriced. Made in the USA.

I have always adored Peruvian Connection, although they are too expensive. Yes, over the years, I have cautiously purchased items there, but always, always on sale. My last purchase was a set of leather/​silver (might be silver) bracelets — my first jewelry purchase. I purchased them Memorial Day weekend and last month, they came apart — unglued, undone, separated and unwearable. I called the store without a remedy, ultimately calling the main customer service and they suggested that I call the store again. I called the store leaving a message for the person I had originally spoken with and I have yet to receive a call back. I can safely say I will no longer shop at P.C. I’ve grown so tired of corporate greed — it’s not just Wall Street or banks or larger corporations. Their offerings may look good but, like everyone else, it’s strictly marketing and profit — to many retailers, the motto is, there’s no profit in quality or customer service. Point taken P.C. (When was the last time you’ve opened an item you’ve purchased and have seen the slip, «inspected by. .. . «?) The new definition of quality control is standing at the docks waiting for the latest shipment from China and counting the units ordered.

This is by far the WORST customer experience I have had with a catalog retailer. An extremely overpriced cardigan that lost shape, stitching and was very flimsy. After avoiding wearing it, I inquired about returning for an exchange. Was given a unilateral NO — not even the absurd re-​stocking fee. This retailer should be ashamed of their appalling customer service and should be reported. DON’T BUY!!!

I am a very long time catalog buyer from this company and have been happy until a most unfortunate recent experience which required dealing with customer service. There was a problem with a jacket that I purchased which did not have proper care instructions. I needed to have the jacket exchanged. The first customer service agent/​supervisor was not only not helpful but surly and disagreeable. She would not confirm a replacement but instead said they would make a determination after receiving the jacket back. Maybe they would replace and maybe not. I asked to speak to another supervisor who at least was pleasant but still would not agree to exchange the jacket. Hellooo!
I have been forking over piles of money to these people over the years plus paying their exorbitant shipping costs which are certainly not sent Priority Mail. I expect better treatment and more courteous responses than what I received. I am now very hesitant to ever order from them again. Its a shame for a company to lose a big buyer when all they had to do was be pleasant and agree to an exchange. That’s all I needed.

CHECK THEIR RETURN POLICY before you buy anything. If you wait more than 30 days to return, there’s «up to» a 50-​percent restocking fee! Restocking fee? For clothes? Are they kidding? 30 days is easily surpassable when you order online. And their clock starts counting from time of purchase, not delivery.
What’s more, they «request» that you return items within 15 days. 15 days? Let’s see: you buy on the 1^st, it arrives on the 7^th if you’re lucky, you give the item to your wife on her birthday, which is the 15^th — if you’re into deadline shopping. There goes your return window — out the window.
My wife understandably takes at least a few days to try on and consider things I buy her — and I buy her a lot, and she doesn’t have all the time in the world to try on things and see how they fit, how the style and colors work for her.
And Peruvian Collection wants its stuff back within 30 days or they’ll charge me a 50-​percent restocking fee on a $ 398 sweater? That’s insane. It’s insulting. Very bad business. I told them to check out Nordstrom’s for a generous return policy. Even Neiman-​Marcus is better. 60 days should be a minimum. And restocking fees are for furniture, not clothes. Bad Fail. I’m off their mailing list.

I purchased an item from the catalog and paid a pretty penny for the shipping. I have increasingly had to return items — tops, dresses, skirts, pants are just too long. The sweaters are really itchy, as well.
I was visiting Kansas City and brought the sweater back for a refund and had selected another sweater for exchange. They don’t accept catalog purchased returns at their retail stores!!! Which means an additional charge for shipping.
I did not buy the sweater and I plan to return the other sweater for a full refund. I also plan to NEVER shop at Peruvian Connection again.

Very inadequate customer service. I ordered an item on a Saturday night, it showed a confirmation «Thank You For Your Order.» Yet, I received no confirmatory email. I called customer service the night of the order and again the next morning, yet I was told I’d have to wait to call again on Monday to determine if the order had gone through. Also, in the first call to customer service, he posited that their computer update (which would be occurring hours’ later) might be to blame. The merchandise was a sale item, and by the time they figure out what is going on with the order, it may be sold out.

This is only a review of the catalog. I have two complaints: (1) shipping costs are unusually high (2) to add insult to injury, returns to the local store are not allowed.

The first thing that struck me about this place is that I can’t afford anything in here. That’s fine. Though I was a little displeased that the lowest priced items, tiny silk scarves dyed in subtle gradients, were still in the 40s, 50s or 60s. Really. I’m sure they’re hand dyed, but they’re small and you can get hand painted scarves which require much more labor for that amount.
So here comes the part of this review where I have to decide whether I’m going to rate this place as a typical sweater consumer or a knitter. As a knitter the experience was very love/​hate. I was expecting a lot more hand knitted work or gorgeous, sumptuous pieces with all kinds of flourish –I mean, come on, the name «Peruvian» implies it will be all about those gorgeous, traditional Peruvian knits — as opposed to machine knits and jersey items, but there were a few inspiration pieces (at whopping prices) that got my gears going. They had a lovely display with yarns and spindles hidden in a wall cabinet to the side.
As a seeker of cozy winter wear, this place was great if you can afford it. The obvious machine knits were certainly more affordable than the items that looked like they could have been handmade. They also took care to make sure that every top has a matching bottom so this is a great place to come and purchase an outfit as opposed to just a sweater. I find that that’s often tricky with sweaters, so that was a plus. It’s just very niche. If you are a sweater aficionado, willing to spend money for high quality cozy, this is the perfect place for you. Otherwise… you could probably buy a perfectly satisfying sweater at TJ Maxx for a portion of the price.

We’re not so lucky out on the West Coast to have a store so I just peruse the catalogs. The women’s clothing is interesting and there are maybe 1 or 2 items I’m really interested in possibly once a year. I’ve ordered only twice from these folks in the several years I’ve been receiving their catalogs, and both times they were back-​ordered. But get this, I ordered a cute tunic sweater top back in May this year and here it is Oct and I just rec’d the item. I was about to give up and tell them to cancel the order-I’ve already forgotten what it looked like, at least the style isn’t dated yet!
I cannot understand why an item is offered for sale when they don’t even have the stock-​oh, maybe they had 1 in each size… Anyway, I gave only two stars because their prices are too high and they don’t seem to know how to manage their stock. I think now it’s just not worth it for me to order so I won’t be perusing their catalogs any longer, there are comparable products and with only 1 or 2 items that are of interest to me, ehh, I’ll look elsewhere.

I usually order from the catalog, but whenever I’m in DC I like to stop by the PC store. Everything is so soft… it’s pretty pricey, but the quality makes it worth it. I have a few dresses that will be in my collection for life. I’m even lazy and just throw them in the washing machine, and they turn out just fine — no piling or shit that happens when you end up buying something from H&M. Not that I don’t love them, I do, but nothing beats a quality made dress.
Sizes run big, so try on something smaller than what you think your size is.

I’ve always been mystified by this store, which opened up in a shiny, pretty, renovated building on 10^th and F less than a year ago in the terrifying Disneyesque development that is Penn Quarter. «Another one?» I thought as I passed it for the first time, «How could there possibly be demand for more ethnic products at cocaine markup that isn’t already satisfied by Toro Mata, Pangea, Go Mama Go! and any one of the millions of crunchy stores already dotting this city like probiotic, macrobiotic, raw, vegan fungus?»
It’s hours are wildly inconvenient for me, closing at 6pm on most days except for Thursdays, when they are open until 7pm. I finally made it in there when I escaped early one day, and it all began to make sense. See, Peruvian Connection doesn’t peddle «ethnic products carved from condor bones by Quechua Indians on top of cloud-​haunted mountains» so much as, «things you’d wear if you were starring in a movie where you are the recently-​widowed, but beautiful and strong-​willed, young haciendada on a sprawling Andean estate where you narrow your eyes a lot and eventually fall in love with a handsome, manly vaquero whose insubordinate attitude and sullen looks belie his burning passion etc., etc.» Basically if you are Penelope Cruz in any period movie set in Latin America ever made.
So this means lots of fitted, stiff-​collared jackets, drapey sweaters, floaty mid-​calf skirts, brocade, lots of taupe and espresso, forest green and burnt siennas, dangly earrings, and floral shawls.
Also, the belt I bought from there is made in China, not Peru, and was on sale for $ 89 down from $ 129 which means that I bought it at a markup of only 1700% instead of 2600%. It is a great belt though.
Which brings me to the prices, which are «super expensive.» Like, $ 80 pyjama pants kind of expensive. Like, «No, I really don’t have anything better to spend my money on, because I’ve already bought it» kind of expensive. Rich old lady who does listless yoga at Exhale Spa kind of expensive.
It’s mostly women’s clothing, but I think men can buy ugly but expensive Cosby sweaters from them as well. Like this one:
