Pitango Gelato

We tried 2 of the sorbets and was not impressed (3). The pistachio and hazelnut gelato is creamy, flavorful and delicious. We’ll be back soon, yum can’t wait.

I went here with a couple of friends and it is a nice gelato /​coffee place. The gelato is almost on par with Dolcezza and their coffee is probably the most decent in the area for coffee early night time. It’s located in the happening Penn Quarter.
Definitely the go-​to place in the Chinatown/​Penn Quarter for gelato.

DC’s ice cream game is so weak. Soooo weak.
I was visiting DC with one of my friends whom I share quite the ice cream affinity with. So when we were sitting around, bored since all the museums were closed, we tried to scout out ice cream in the area. We stumbled upon Pitango, which had decent reviews so we decided to come. The gelato was extremely underwhelming, although I gave it another star back for it being legit gelato instead of ice cream calling itself gelato. It was ridiculously expensive for the smallest size, which we shared, and I just remember both of us being really disappointed at the whole ordeal. Sigh. :(

I tried multiple ice cream places while visiting NYC and DC and Pilango is my favorite one by far.
Couple of things I really liked:
1) very patient customer service. I was able to sample multiple types of ice cream and got some good suggestions with workers being very helpful
2) obviously ice cream is simply amazing, one of the best pistachio gelato I have ever tried
3) great coffee. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this place uses my favorite organic milk for their cappuccino (and other coffees), so it tasted really great
This place is a bit above the average for ice cream, but it is totally worth it and I would recommend it to anyone

I liked the gelato here, but it was a little expensive. I had the black tea and the stracciatella. The black tea was impressive. Strong flavor but still really milky and creamy at the same time. The stracciatella was good but more expected. The service was quick and impersonal. Not unfriendly but they just kind of rushed us down the line even though there were only a few behind us.

I used to think that gelato was just expensive ice cream, and then places like Pitango blew my mind. Good gelato is rich and creamy in ways that ice cream can’t even approach. Yeah, it comes in little cups and you eat it with a tiny spoon-​spatula… because if you served yourself a quadruple-​scoop waffle sundae extravaganza of gelato, you’d die before you finished it because it was too awesome for your mouth. A little goes a long way, and it’s worth every delicate little bite.
Pitango does both sorbets and gelato, so there’s something for nearly anyone. The good news is — the menu changes daily, and includes both classic flavors (like chocolate, pistachio, or strawberry) and more unique options (like dark chocolate orange, white grapefruit, or mojito). The bad news is — the menu changes daily, so if you show up with a favorite flavor in mind, they might not have it today. But the menu is so diverse and delicious that you won’t be disappointed for long!
My favorite? Black tea. I’m a big tea fan, in any form, and this is like the perfect tea latte in creamy frozen form. I’ve tried other flavors — dark chocolate orange is just like chocolate-​covered candied orange peel, and milk & honey is gooey and sticky from all the real honey — but I keep coming back to the black tea flavor. What’s especially nice about it is that it goes with pretty much everything — so you can do a scoop of black tea with a scoop of whatever floats your boat!
Pitango is also a café, which is largely lost on me because I can’t drink coffee. They used to offer hot chocolate served over gelato, like an affogato, but it wasn’t offered at my last visit. I’m hoping they’ll bring it back so I can try it!

They have a really great flavor selection. Tried the black tea and it was very unique – the after taste was definitely a bit reminiscent of drinking a cup of tea and very refreshing. I would have liked to try the matcha as well if they had it at the time. The texture of their gelato is a bit different from most other gelato I’ve seen, as it’s less thick and easier to scoop. I probably would’ve preferred the more usual consistency, but that’s just a matter of taste. The availability of flavors is enough to keep coming back.

Great place for gelato. I have been to frozen yogurt places and of course, ice cream places. I am guessing gelato is just another way to prepare dairy?
This place had two flavors I had to try: mojito and espresso. Both were exquisite.

If you spend anytime in DC during the late spring/​early summer, you will likely need something to cool off from those sweltering days and nights you can only find in a town built on former swampland. I stopped in here a few times to check out the gelato and try their iced coffee.
If you are a coffee aficionado, you may appreciate that this place uses the Japanese method for iced coffee. I’ve tried this version of iced coffee at other cafes, and I thought Pitango’s version was on point. I guess I should also give credit to the Counter Culture beans, which has definitely turned into one of my favorite coffee brands in recent years.
I will say that line system is a bit confusing for people ordering coffee rather than gelato. It took me more than I liked to figure out how to get a server’s attention as numerous people in front of me seemed to bypass my on their way to gelato. The snarky attitude from one of the staff members seemed also unnecessary, but I chalked it up to some of the DC/​East Cost ‘tude that I know and (mostly) love.
Oh, I guess I should talk about the gelato, but I never ended up trying them! Next time, Pitango, I will have to sample your amazing gelato flavors!

The gelato here is amazing in variety, flavor, and texture. I had a small size with black tea and pistachio and loved the rich flavor of both. I also tried some affogato. This is the first time I’ve heard of this dessert, but now that I know it exists it won’t be my last! The creamy gelato meshed well with the deep flavor of the espresso.
As for service, while they were polite the two staff members looked genuinely unhappy to be here.
Definitely a good place for gelato and drinks if you don’t mind the dour faces!

Love this gelato… It’s done right and with amazing ingredients.
These are words coming from someone who admittedly was once a… Gelatoholic and now a 3 yrs. sober member of GA — «Gelatoholic Anonymous!»
Pitango Gelato does this dense, rich, creamy confection… right for me in so many ways. They create authentic gelato focusing on classic Italian flavors rather than… novelties or trends. No «Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors» or «Zoolander Crazy Mix» of flavors here! Just simple, grass fed organic milk and fresh high-​quality all natural ingredients… no artificial ingredients of any kind. Its smooth creaminess outshines most gelato/​ice cream offerings from shops around DC any day of the week, in my opinion. And, Pitango’s flavors pop in taste and is an outrageously silky experience on the tastebuds. Pistachio is the benchmark and flavor I judge all gelato by; as a comparisons to other places. Pitango definitely delivers and by far the pistachio is my favorite at this location! It’s so creamy and captures the authentic nutty, salt flavor of a pistachio. So that only means that the other flavors must follow suit, right? And, that answer is yes! I have tried all the flavors from here and none of them disappoint.
Three flavors highly recommended and noteworthy:
+ Caffè Espresso — A crowd pleaser. You can tastes Dcozens of shots of espresso whipped into a batch of creamy Italian custard; with a hint of lemon zest hitting the tongue.
+ Stracciatella (Vanilla Chocolate Chip) — Sweet milk gelato and chocolate chips form the perfect marriage in a cup.
+++ Chocolate Noir (Dark Chocolate) — A must Try! Dark, deep and complex. An intense flavor that’s not too sweet or too bitter. It’s also rich in antioxidants, low in fat and dairy free. LOL
Definitely winning flavors to enjoy alone or in combination with one another. This place lets you combine them however you like.
I also love their use of espresso to complete the experience. Try the Affogatto, if you get a chance. It is a love child of gelato and espresso combined together — to create… the taste of HEAVEN & BLISS in a cup! One taste and you will know what m talking about. Definitely, a foodie moment that keeps me coming back! So perhaps the next time you crave that sensational treat… head on over to Pitango. Definitely worth a visit… or two… or fourty!

This place is awesome! Probably one of my favorite gelato place in the US. I went to Italy and overdosed on gelato. When I came back to the US, I tried to stray away from gelato shops, because I thought that I couldn’t find something as good as the ones I’ve had in Europe. Fortunately, Pitango is here to cure my cravings. Unlike many other gelato shops that serve icy, airy, melty, overly sweet, and other horribly textured gelato, this place have a denser and creamier texture. They also have sorbets which are not too sweet and icy like a slushy.
I recommend trying these flavor combos: Nocciola (hazelnut) and Milk & Honey, or Strawberry Sorbet and Black Tea. They have seasonal flavors, so some of these may not be there.
It is slightly pricey, but it is well worth the price. It’s not something that you’d eat everyday. Treat Yourself!

YUMM!!! A friend had said this was his favorite gelato shop in DC and also almost comparable to the gelato he had in Europe, so I had to try to this place. Pitango is delicious! I love the consistency as it is almost a creamy/​thick texture, rather than being watery/​airy and melting all over the place. I love that they let you try all the flavors before purchasing and to be honest… I wanted to buy all of them, as they were all really good! My personal favorites on my first time there was the black tea and strawberry, but I will definitely be back again if every in DC!

Six dollars. I feel the need to spell that out. S-​I-​X dollars. Even. Just so you know. That is the price for their regular gelato. I liked the size of it — it’s a totally reasonable serving. Just, you know, six dollars.
The damage was done. So how was the gelato? Meh. It was okay. I appreciated their commitment to quality ingredients and an authentic process. No problem with their avoidance of gimmicky flavors. But as far as gelato goes, I’ve had better… and not just on that spring break trip to Europe in college you really want me to shut up about.

A bit pricy, but good nonetheless. They have a variety of flavors but Sicilian almond is definitely one to try. The texture is right and it’s aromatic and creamy. Honey and milk was good, but plain.

I don’t know about you but this place is perfect after walking around museums and such or just for dessert!

My wife and I came in to cool off with some gelato. We ordered a scoop of black tea Gelato and a scoop of cantaloupe sorbet. Both flavors were good and suble. Nothing g was overly sweet or too overpowering. However, considering the price, the size of the scoops were a little too small. At $ 6, I would have expected a slightly bit more in that cup!
This is a small place and there isn’t a whole lot of seating. Since the Gelato is so delicate, you don’t really want to eat it outside and have it melt on you. However, there isn’t a lot of room inside either and there isn’t enough space to mill about. When I was there, there were two people who appeared to be having some sort of business meeting and were clearly finished with their scoops. Kind of strange.
I can’t complain about the service but there was nothing really stand out either. My only suggestion would be to have a water fountain or something like that for customers to wash down some of that milkiness from the gelato.

Excellent Gelato and Sorbet!
I’d say it’s very close the real thing. My raspberry sorbet took me all the way back to the streets of Rome.
Ice cream aficionados be sure to try this place out if you’ve never tried Gelato.

Mmmm! So worth your time to make a trip here! Every flavor is amazing and tastes so
Fresh and creamy. They have a wide selection of flavors to pick from and they let you sample them. There is a significant size difference between the large and the small, so I say go for the large:) they let you pick different flavors in a large so you can get best of both worlds. I have even seen people get three flavors in a cup!
The line might seem long and not worth your time, but trust me there’s a reason why people wait in a long line at a tiny shop. The line also moves relatively fast.
There is not a lot of seating at this place, so you might have to enjoy your gelato outside while standing, or you might be lucky enough to grab a seat at one of their stools. Whatever the case, you will not be disappointed!

Oh Pitango, thanks for bringing a tango of flavors into my mouth! You have continued to feed into my love for gelato and just great tasting flavors. For about 5 dollars each my friend and I shared 4 different flavors!
Crema — very creamy yet delectable — isn’t your regular original gelato. It has the right amount of sweetness and goes well with any of the fruity flavors.
Pistachio — not really sweet but delicious of you like pistachio — would not recommend with any of the fruit flavors. It went well with the chocolate noir!
Raspberry — paired this with the crema and was just in love with how fresh and sweet it tasted. It seriously tastes like you are eating a handful of raspberries. So jsbeheusnrnskif refreshing. Excuse my word vomit it’s just flat out amazing!
Chocolate noir — no question get this for chocolate perfection
