Stephen the Tailor

Hands down the best tailoring experience I’ve ever had. It’s amazing how much better my suits look with just a few minor adjustments. The price was totally reasonable. They were able to give me a quick turnaround (1 week) for having two jackets taken in and two pants tailored. What’s more, everyone was very nice and helpful. Excellent customer service.
I will definitely stop buying off the rack and come here for custom suits in the future.

Been going to Stephen the Tailor for years! They always do great work and very flexible for your schedule. While they are a little pricy, Their work really stands that quality test. Won’t go anywhere else!

I had to get my suit and shirt fixed right before an important meeting and Stephen really helped me out. Glad we have his shop in DC. You folks in DC are lucky he’s in your neighborhood.

A lifesaver. My fiancé came in needing his suit pants hemmed in under 24 hours — Stephen and his employee said no problem (and with a smile). They were hemmed perfectly. I feel bad for the other reviewers here who state they had poor experiences, but we simply did not experience the same.

There is a saying that goes «good, fast, cheap, pick two». A 5-​star business would be all three, and unfortunately Stephen the Tailor is none. I am extremely disappointed with the work at this place, considering I’ve spent upwards of $ 700 on 5 suits and had a nearly 3 week turnaround time for each visit. On top of that, each visit they promised a phone call when the garments were ready but that did not happen a single time.
After about 1 year of regular office wear, 3 pants legs and 1 jacket sleeve hem have come apart. I also didn’t notice this until recently, but two of the jacket sleeves were hemmed crookedly. The very sweet lady who runs Mass Court Cleaners showed me the poor hand worksmanship, and she also noted the literally SINGLE string of thread that was used to attach the sleeve buttons on the jacket. As another reviewer said, it is simply too much hassle to return here to try and convince them to repair what they should have done properly in the first place.

I came here based on the feedback. I was having an issue with the shoulders on my suit, so I asked to have shoulder pads put in. I got it back and wore it for a few days, but still wasn’t satisfied, so I asked them to take the pads out — no problem, they said.
I come back the next day, and they had (without asking me) cut the entire original (half)canvas shoulder and just sewed a shoulderpad into the gap instead. (I know this because I opened it up myself later on to see what they had done)
Needless to say, I was confused why they would do such major surgery without asking me. This made the problem even worse and couldn’t be undone — the suit is unwearable. They kept telling me «just get it pressed and it will be fine.» I did, and that did not help at all. I never went back for a refund or anything because I was so annoyed.

This is my first Unilocal review… Please, if you are a woman, do NOT go here. I came here to get my bridesmaid dress hemmed for my sisters wedding and it is two inches too short. I even told Stephen
I thought it was going to be too short during the fitting yet he insisted it would be fine. He left no fabric to let it out. Please, save yourself the time, money, and stress and go somewhere else.

I wasn’t going to write this review initially. I was going to get over my frustration, get my jacket fixed somewhere else, and move on with my life. But then I got a new job, a couple of new suits, got busy, and completely forgot about the magnitude of the ordeal. Then, this morning, my (first) world came crashing down around me. I slid out of my Egyptian cotton sheets and out from under my baby albino goose down comforter, had my butler scrub me down, did my 1000 pushups while he shaved my face and moisturized me, then opened my closet to determine how I wanted to look while I crushed the working life this day. Then I saw it.
I was out of suits.
There must have been some oversight. Some mistake. Had Woodhouse forgotten my dry cleaning? It couldn’t be – the last time he did this, I took his wedding finger (it’s fine – he’ll never be married due to his blood oath, and he sews almost exclusively with his right hand).
No time to dwell, I had to work with what I had. As I frantically ran through my closet, I remembered the Brooks Brothers suit. Charcoal. 1818. Fitzgerald. Without thinking, I hopped into the pants (which had gotten a little snug in the backside, probably due to the butt-​enhancing underwear I was wearing), grabbed a Crisp White Shirt (CWS), and threw on my jacket.
Then I felt it.
The Pull.
A great jacket should fit like a glove. A larger, sexier glove that gets you promotions and girlfriends and happiness. When you button it, the jacket should Hug. A Hug comes from all parts of the jacket. Like a good bed partner, it lets you know it’s there without clamoring for your attention in the middle of the night. It brushes against you occasionally during the day, reminding you how great you look and how people should appreciate your handsomeness and charm. When you’re wearing a suit, you never feel the heat, only the Hug; like a well-​trained group of gypsy children, it presses against you and desensitizes you to everything, especially the status of your bank account.
My Brooks Brothers jacket was not Hugging. It was Pulling.
I felt it around my kidneys at first, a gentle tension that didn’t sit well with my protein shake. Then I stepped in front of the mirror.
Damnit.
It all came flooding back. The uncomfortable heat. The smell of the place. The transactional nature of the fitting. The feeling that I was waiting in line at a checks-​for-​cash spot. The platitudes exchanged over the +$ 1K piece of cloth surrounding my body. «Sure, that’s fine.» Men: a lesson. When you’re getting something tailored, nothing should be «fine.» Everything should be «perfect,» or «excellent,» or «wow.» That’s what you’re paying for. Turns out, I paid for The Pull.
This jacket was far from «wow.» After the initial tailoring (which went poorly enough that I had them re-​tailor it), I told them I wanted it more fitted in the waist, so they took the waist in and added… hips. I’m not sure why they decided to do that, or why they wanted me to button both buttons when they pinned the jacket. I’m not sure why the jacket no longer had a lumbar curve, or why even the top of the back had lost its tautness. I still had a lot of questions, about this jacket and life generally. Regardless, I now looked like a Bama Sig Ep on the way to his first formals (apologies to anyone offended by that, or any of this post, really): sloppy and disheveled, or perhaps like I was bootlegging liquor strapped to my thighs. I looked like a cross between Jack Donaghy and George W.
Of course, this is fine if you work in Ohio or want a suit that matches your dad’s. But I don’t work in Ohio. I work in Dupont.
Bottom line: tailoring should be a delightful process, not a trip to the DMV. And you should come out of the tailors looking like a million bucks – not sweaty, stinky, and with a horrible picture of yourself. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a great experience at Stephen’s. Maybe yours will be better, but mine won’t, because I’m not going back.
*Note: I do not have a butler, can only do about 100 pushups, and do not believe in taking goslings from their mothers.

Just no. Maybe they do a decent job on men’s clothes or on a simple pants hem, but Ladies: DO NOT take a dress to this place!!! I brought my very simple reception dress here as I wanted the lining to be extended to the floor rather than stopping at mid-​thigh (looked strange in lighting and wouldn’t have photographed well). While they told me this was a straightforward job, when I got the dress back it was SO wrong in every single way. I could have done a better job at putting in a lining MYSELF. It puffed out from a slit in the leg, had visible seams where they haphazardly attached it to the original lining, and was completely unwearable, even after they had kept it for THREE WEEKS! I had to take the dress over to Green and Blue where they shook their heads in disbelief at the work had been done and put a proper lining in — should have gone to them first!

Great service. I had some pant legs tapered, and it turned out I’d asked for them too skinny; they took out the taper a bit to where I wanted it, and didn’t charge me anything for the fix.
Took about a week each time for the tapering, though. I don’t frequent tailors, but I suspect that isn’t the quickest, if you’re in a time crunch.

I was the MOH in my twin sister’s wedding. I needed the straps shortened on my bridesmaid dress, which they said they could do no problem, but I would need to wait almost two weeks for the alteration to be complete. When I went to pick up my dress, I was pretty horrified. It was so blatantly obvious where the dress had been cut and re-​sewn, both because of the quality and because the thread they used to sew the straps did not even remotely match the color of the dress. In fact, a different color thread was used for each strap. One side was less atrocious than the other, but they agreed to resew both with a thread that actually matched the dress. No one at the shop seemed even remotely apologetic about the mistake, which was the worst part.
The next day I went to pick up the dress on my way out of town for the wedding. The thread color matched the dress and the quality of the job seemed to have improved. However, the day of the wedding the seam on one of the shoulders literally fell apart within 2 hours of wearing the dress. 10 minutes before walking down the aisle, the bride was re-​sewing the seam of my strap, which I had just paid close to $ 40 for professionals to do.
Needless to say, I won’t be returning.

The tailors here are ridiculously skilled, no question. They’ve made even extensive alterations on my suits with the utmost skill. Unfortunately, they are INCREDIBLY busy — even minor alterations (adding a pocket to a coat) have an ETA of 2+ weeks. Be warned, this probably isn’t the place for emergency work or for impatient folks (like me).

Alterations came apart after 2 wears– save yourself time and frustration and go somewhere else.
Follow up– they fixed it free of charge with extra stitching and it hasn’t split since in over a year.

I had to leave town on Thursday for a wedding and I brought my bridesmaid dress in on Monday. I needed it in two days, and even though he was backlogged with all the graduation dresses and suits, he worked with me on my schedule and did the alterations I needed. It looked so much better. Can’t thank him enough.

StT did a great job re-​zippering my motorcycle jacket and they tailored a few shirts, price was reasonable and service was quick.

While maybe Stephen The Tailor is better at his work on suits, I have been left unimpressed by his work on my gown and some simple hemming on pants.
I felt like part of the problem was that he and his staff were not up to date with current women’s fashion trends. On my skinny jeans he hemmed the jeans so that the front was shorter than the back– think of a boot cut/​flare jean where you want a slight amount more in the back to cover your heels. However, this is not «the look» with the skinny jean where the jeans are stopping at the ankle and NEVER does the back fall below the shoes. While these jeans have worked for the fall I now must go to get them re-​hemed/​altered to that I don’t have a bizarre look where my skinny jeans have fall over my heels. This happened with both pairs of skinny jeans I took there.
His work on my gown was better, however I felt it was overpriced for the very slight alteration made.

Devon and his team are great. I flew in to the states for a three-​day break from deployment. I dropped my off-​the-​rack suit off on Tuesday afternoon. By Thursday afternoon, the suit fit like a glove, ready for a Friday wedding.
Not just great tailors, the whole team looked after me. They easily accommodated my rushed schedule, even giving me an early call to let me know the suit was done and ready for pick up.
There’s a lot of stress returning home from five months overseas. Getting your suit right for your buddy’s wedding is top priority. I couldn’t have done it without these guys. Thanks fellas, you’ve got my business when I come back for good.

After so many positive reviews I had to check the place out. I went once to get pants hemmed, and while expensive, they turned out fine.
But what really soured me on this place was when I came again to get a jacket I bought online altered. The company that I bought the jacket from would reimburse me the alteration charges as long as I told them exactly what and how much the jacket was taken in. When I went in to Stephen the Tailor, they didn’t want to tell me how much they were going to take in the jacket and from where.
Basically, they wanted to withhold information related to a service I was paying them to do. It’s as if you went to a mechanic to do work on your car, and he would do it but didn’t want to tell you exactly what he did.
There are places that are cheaper and have better customer service than than Stephen the Tailor.

I picked Stephen the Tailor based off the Unilocal reviews and because it’s super close to my office.
These guys are great. I’ve mostly only had simple alterations, like hemming dresses, jeans, and suit pants. The quality was top notch. He does a great job hemming jeans, both with keeping the original hem and cutting them and hemming them.
I find the prices moderate ($ 15 – 25 for a basic hem).
