I meet a colleague for coffee last week. I arrived about an hour early. It was early morning and they the customer traffic was never really heavy. I ordered their BLT and a coffee. Cashier forgot my coffee and gave it to me at no charge(e.g., great customer service).

****CLOSED. So sad to see that this coffee shop has now closed:(I am not a big coffee drinker so I usually get the Northwest Spiced chai and the waffles. They always went above and beyond to get to know each customer. Wishing you guys the best of luck at Columbia Heights

This Tynan is essentially in the same building as my office. It used to be half-way decent, but has gotten progressively worse for the past year. First, they don’t have decaf coffee at all. What kind of coffeeshop doesn’t even have decaf coffee? Second, their accuracy for making drinks is about 50%, meaning half of the time I order something they get at least one component of my drink wrong. The last time I ordered a Teaquila Sunrise and they gave me a Tea Breeze. To their credit, they were willing to make the drink over again. But this happens on a regular basis which leads me to believe there’s some type of systemic issue they face in getting drinks made to order. Finally, they only have one flavor of sugar free syrup(vanilla). Not the worst thing in the world, but the Starbucks down the street has 3 or 4 options which is very much appreciated for those of us in the world who are careful about not drinking too much sugar! Finally, the employees are so-so. None of them are particularly cheerful, but some are better than others.

I’m honestly surprised by Tynan, particularly considering where this one is located. Everything else around here is an utter nightmare while this coffee shop is downright pleasant. Every single time I’ve come the staff has been exceptionally friendly and helpful. The food and drinks are nothing special but perfectly decent. The turkey sandwich I’m eating right now is quite good! There is also outside seating and it’s never crowded. The atmosphere is rather corporate chain with little character, the prices aren’t exactly a bargain and«NOMA» is a mess but besides all that I’ve really been impressed, almost shocked with Tynan!

I went to do work with a friend on Sunday afternoon, and the all-around experience could be much improved with one more staff member and preparation. The tea selection was good, and I loved that they serve breakfast all day and have a ton of seating. However, they ran out of eggs while I was there, and the two staff members were just too busy, so service was a bit slow. Coupled with slow and patchy wi-fi, I don’t plan to spend much time at Tynan NoMa.

The menu is a very close replica of Starbucks(with the exception of the bagel with smoked salmon… LOVE!!!) which I love. The people are just as nice. The location was great as it was next to the hotel we stayed at and the NoMa Metro. They have a good amount of outdoor seating as well and there are plenty of tables inside. The servers that handled us each day were outstanding and very bubbly, engaging and funny. That is the reason I would choose this place over Starbucks :) BRINGTYNANTOMASSACHUSETTS!!!

Terrible. They are apparently too hip to serve decaf, so people on caffeine restricted diets don’t get coffee(sorry, pregnant and nursing moms). The woman behind the counter was nasty, and when I nicely asked about the whereabouts of my drink, which they had forgotten to make even though there were no other customers waiting, she gave me attitude like it was my fault. Avoid!

The selection of teas here is top notch. The staff is very knowledgeable and explained the subtle differences between each variety. I learned alot and would prefer coming here instead of the major chains in the surrounding areas. Overall a nice place to sit and sip exotic teas. If you decide to enjoy your beverage inside, request a glass mug, as it dramatically affects the taste.

Ordered a vanilla chai and loved it :) The service… not so much. Staff was quick to bring out orders but the food was bland, several of our orders were messed up, and one of our drinks was forgotten. One of my friends ordered a breakfast sandwich with sausage but they gave her bacon TWICE. Not to mention the server gave us attitude while giving her the replacements. I ordered a waffle sandwich with turkey and they gave me bacon as well but I didn’t bother correcting them after seeing how they handled my friend’s order.

Decent coffee shop in NoMa. The service is great and the coffees are large. I got a cappuccino and it was served in a huge coffee cup which made the place feel a little more homely. The cappuccino was good, although it was light on the foam and the foam itself was not very creamy. Decent drink but not super memorable. All in all, good spot to grab coffee with a friend but I wouldn’t make it a destination in and of itself.

This location still seems understaffed. That said, the grown-up grilled cheese is the fastest item on the fast-serve menu.

Several months on and slowly adjusting to life in NOMA and I can honestly say that my experience at Tynan’s has improved significantly. The staff has become more friendly and engaging. Not just to me, but generally. Also love the nice china used when I have time to drink my coffee in the café. Now I do make this my go to for morning coffee!

Great spot. Good coffee, friendly staff, reasonably priced, and great layout. I’ve only really had their coffee so I can’t speak to the rest of the menu. However, they have booze and a happy hour, so I’ll be back for that later.

Some of the staff needs more training. The cashier kept making small talk with someone else while people were waiting in line. When she finally got to me, she was distracted and didn’t hear everything I said. When I went up to get my drink, the other employee seemed annoyed that I didn’t know where she put my drink, which was out of sight.

Not sure why the only 3 star review, possibly because it’s slightly pricier than the Starbucks a block away, but the quality of both food and drinks is also triplefold that of Starbucks and this isn’t a large chain to my knowledge, which is also a plus in my book. There’s more room for sitting in comfortably(compared to the neighboring Starbucks) and there’s ample outdoor seating which is a huge plus! They also serve wine which I have not had yet, but it seems like it would be a nice spot for happy hour if you work in or around the NOMA area. They serve breakfast all day(who doesn’t love that?!?). My favorites are the caramel macchiato and the dirty chai as far as drinks go, and you have to try the breakfast BLT(egg, tomato, bacon, arugula and a light spread of mayo on Sourdough. They have waffles too if you’re into that! Service is great too and there’s free wifi! All around awesome place and worth a couple extra pennies for the best coffee around.

I think I’m a pretty laid-back chill person. I’ve worked as a barista before. I hold my tongue if I experience less than good service at a coffee shop because it’s usually due to people being slammed with a crowd or being understaffed. But, when there’s a coffee place in the middle of several office buildings, and it’s just under 9AM, I expect staff to play along with the rush. And at least try-so I have to say something about this place. It was not understaffed, there were three people at bar. There was no line. And yet, when I ordered my latte, the girl at the bar seemed to not notice, or care. She just continued clowning around with the two other girls running the store. After about five minutes, she finally started making my drink, and then took some more time off. The drink itself was meh-she handed it to me with milk dripping down the side. Like I said, as a former barista, you can’t pull this kind of thing during the morning rush. You can bust out a small 8oz latte in two minutes or less if you have to steam new milk. I spent 15 minutes there, 10 of them waiting.

About me: I am a big coffee aficionado and thus NOT a fan of Starbuck’s. Having said that, skip this place and go to Starbuck’s. Sorry, but this place is not a good coffee joint. The main reasons: –Counter staff are not particularly friendly or knowledgeable about coffee –Only one brewed coffee available and it’s their house blend, a Vienna Roast.(Blegh!) –The coffee for their pour overs(which they call infusions or something) is pre-ground and stored in little bins for who knows how long? If you’re into coffee, don’t go here, just get a Starbuck’s Blonde and be on your way. This neighborhood just doesn’t have a good coffee shop yet.

Tynan is an average coffee shop in the Noma neighborhood. There isn’t anything too remarkable about this place. What’s good is that they serve actual breakfast and lunch meals(eggs, waffles, quiches, lox bagel, several sandwiches, etc), which you wouldn’t get at Starbucks or other comparable cafes. Another positive is the large space and the comfortable chairs they have, which makes for a nice morning experience. The downside is that the service was slow(the food, and even my croissant, took forever).

Speeds you up in the morning with a latte, slows you down in the afternoon with an IPA :) After seeing the exceedingly long line at the ubiquitous Seattle coffee chain across the way I hopped into Tynan where I was the only customer at 8am on a weekday(weird). Barista was pleasant and made my drink immediately, altho she did not seem to have consumed much of her own product LOL and was moving kinda slowly.

This branch of Tynan is sort of a strange hybrid: the usual coffee and tea drinks served at the Columbia Heights location(using their own brand of beans and tea), but happy hour with beer and wine during the week when it closes at 8pm. Maybe it’s because there’s not a lot else serving booze in the neighborhood(Thaaja, a sort of Indian Chipotle around the corner does something similar). On the weekend, however, this place is Dullsville. Great for anyone wanting a quiet place to use free wi-fi(outlets for your laptop by each table and under the bar by the window) but a snooze for anyone looking for vibrancy. They close at 3pm, but strangely stop serving food a noon(isn’t that like, uh, lunchtime?) Maybe once they fill in all the new apartments in the neighborhood they’ll consider staying open later.
