Not sure what the granary or the coop is but they are not the same thing as the restaurant. Cheap prices if that’s what your looking for. Ended up arriving with another couple that left after being seated, then ended up sharing the entire dining room with just 1 Russian couple. Not sure what to think anymore. I have seen enough Washington island to never have to return… Ever…

Baked potato was undercooked, coming apart in chunks rather than being able to grind finely with a fork to put butter in. Then I tried the breaded pork chop I ordered. It was SO tough to cut. Server asked if I wanted something else after complaining about the potato and needing a knife. I said I had lost my appetite. For some stupid reason, I soldiered on and tried to eat it anyway. Big mistake. After eating some of the pork chop(it was a lot of effort), I got food poisoning. Bad dinner for me, is all I can say. Thankfully, they didn’t charge for my meal.

After several more visits, K K Fiske — and the rest of the Koyen Collection — have become one of the favorite stops on the island for my girlfriend and I. Chef Alex has recently updated the menu, and the changes are excellent. The chicken remains phenomenal, they have great sides, there’s plenty of quick bites that you can share with friends, and they’ve expanded their dinner selection. The bar is well staffed, and I can heartily recommend getting a few drinks featuring the local Death’s Door gin. The bar area is kept clean, the jukebox is frequently updated with new songs, and the place is tons of fun whenever there’s a special event. I’d venture to say that K K Fiske has the nicest amenities of any bar or restaurant on the island, at reasonable prices.

Oh KK Fiske, or, The Granary, you have outdone yourselves. I have lived on the island years ago, and spent a fair amount of time here. Recently visiting though, we had their broasted chicken. Pretty sure this is going to be my go-to fried chicken spot. Nay, not fried, broasted. It was so exquisitely done! Served four pieces, with such delightful mashed potatoes, and green beans. When I got to my fourth piece, I turned it over, and it was not even soggy. Sometimes when you get a fried or broasted chicken, the side near the plate is positively soggy, which is just gross. This, no. Biting into it, cooked thoroughly. No pink weirdness, just beautiful meat. The breading was so good, golden and crunchy and with just the right amount of seasoning. Not spicy, though I do love spicy. I’m pretty sure I’ve been having dreams about this chicken since we left. Lest you think I only remember the chicken, the cheese curds are fantastic too. You can’t go to Wisconsin and not have fried cheese curds. KK Fiske does them perfectly. By perfectly I mean, they aren’t screaming to escape their little breading shells, and they aren’t all mush either or solid either. Brilliant. They still squeak!

This is how seafood restaurants should be – unpretentious, fresh and homey. They serve every kind of fish that can be caught locally, although they will not have all of the selection off season. No matter, all I want is the perch! A flakey, delicate fish with loads of flavour that reminds me of childhood. The perch here is lightly dusted in flour and then fired, which is an excellent way of making it! Other places I went to in Door County had a tendency to over-fry it and put it in too thick batter. Because it is such a delicate fish, really, all it needs is a light fry. The restaurant itself is very simple, with an open fireplace in autumn/winter, and with wooden benches. It’s very cozy. The restaurant and the bar next door have a really interesting interwoven history and are operated by the family who also grows all the wheat for Death’s Door gin, whose name is inspired by the passage between the mainland and Washington Island. You should definitely visit here while on Washington Island – it is even worth making the trip out there for(with all the other fabulous, beautiful things you can see and do here)! You will not regret having perch at this place, or having perch if it’s your first time.

Long wait and bad food. We started on a positive note with an appetizer. Solid deep fried cheese curds that came out so quickly I thought they must have been someone else’s order. Then we ordered long island iced teas that tasted more like Margaritas. After that it was just down hill. The wait for our entrees was so long(90 minutes) that it became a bonding experience for everyone in the restaurant. Once we got our food, we were disappointed. My burger would have been decent if it wasn’t for the roll it was served on. They reminded me of Norwegian Boller(sweet buns) only drier and with less taste. Regardless, they don’t make for great sandwich rolls and turn a decent burger into a bad one. The walleye, also served on the sweet roll, was comically small which was also accentuated by the large rolls. We were there around lunchtime but it wasn’t too busy so I’m not sure the reason for the long wait. This was our only visit so maybe they were just having a bad day … a very bad day.

I was sad cause we were gonna miss the legendary Fish Boil, but in the end, I was happy. I had the walleye basket, and the fish was cooked just right. The story behind this place is even better. The owner is one of the last commercial fishermen on Lake Michigan, and his catch is what is served in the place. Kudos to him for trying to take a «junk» fish like the Lawyer and create a market for it. Next time, gotta make it to the fish boil

We wanted to eat lawyers, and brag about it to Amanda C and Jason Z… just because we are DORKS. (I will never say it enough) But guess what??? They were out!!! So we got the perch diner instead, and left our dork suits out for one night. Le sigh. The place is unique. It is a bar, a ice-cream shop, and a restaurant all at once. And at night it’s hard to tell what is what. My best advice: Just follow the light. Somebody will eventually come and offer you a table. And leave your attitude at home: this is not a fancy place. You know it right away when everything around you is made out of wood(floor, walls, ceiling, decorative items) and when Ratt and AC/DC are playing loud on the radio. You are in rural Wisconsin. 4 stars which are more like 3.335(hehehe) because if the food tasted good to us, hungry campers, it was not stellar and quite overpriced. Let me give you details: — a salad of greens, carrots, mushrooms and CHEESE(you are in rural Wisconsin) — a starchy side(baked potato or fries) — four pieces of deep fried perch with tartar sauce — a serving of coleslaw — one piece of buttered bread — a slice of home-made pie(that night, cherry-rhubarb) for a total of $ 18.95. Our waitress, straight from Russia, was adorable and a little bit overwhelmed, and the other customers were… interesting, to say the least. Worth checking out.

You can’t argue with a place that is absolutely covered from floor to ceiling with wood. KK’s is a worthy Island institution. Firstly, it’s one of the few places on the rock to get a good breakfast. This is key, considering that with the amount of rockin’ out you did the night before, you will need some eggs and hashbrowns to get your day started. For lunch, KK’s serves a killer Lawyer basket. What in the world are Lawyers, you may be asking? Well, it’s a lake fish crossed with an eel, but tastes like lobster. Yeah, it’s weird and if I were you, I wouldn’t look at a picture of one before you eat it, but it’s really amazingly delicious when breaded and fried. KK’s does it best. On the weekends, it’s happening place, serving great beers and having live blues and rock bands.
