Excellent breakfast. Try the Icelandic thin pancakes.

My husband and I have spent several days at the Sunset Resort during four of the last five summers and we think this gem is as good as it gets on Washington Island. Accommodations, both rooms and the extensive public areas, are rustic but comfortable. The setting on the bay is gorgeous. Complimentary coffee, tea or hot chocolate is available by 6 am for early risers who want to take advantage of the sunrise to commune with nature and watch Lee hoist the flags of the day. Sunsets are often very beautiful. The popular breakfast, with service from 8 – 11, features Icelandic specialties along with excellent egg, breakfast meat and oatmeal options(breakfast is extra for resort guests). Guests also have access to refrigeration and cooking facilities after breakfast cleanup so one can fix lunch, dinner or snacks for eating indoors or outside on a picnic table. Fellow guests are an interesting and generally gregarious lot, adding to the charm. The proprietors are welcoming and helpful hosts. Washington Island is a laid back place, as is Sunset Resort, so appropriate expectations are a key to full enjoyment of both the resort and the island.

So quiet and relaxing. We stayed on the first floor with a great view of the lake. The furnishings aren’t fussy, but you’ll have everything you need. We were a bit close to the dining area and thus were worried about noise, but it was perfectly quiet. We’ll definitely stay here again. Paid $ 120 for one night, which was well worth it.

We stayed here because we’d heard so much about the breakfast, but we had a frustrating experience. We were told the dining room would open at 8am, so we waited in our room until 8 *on the dot*(we were hungry!) and walked to the dining room… only to find it filled to the brim with a big group that the hotel had pre-arranged to host — everyone had clearly just sat down. The owner told us we’d have to wait about 45 mins to an hour for our food… and though we explained we had a ferry to catch, he didn’t offer to take our orders before the enormous group. As guests at the hotel, we didn’t really have other viable options for places to eat, and we watched other hotel guests come to the dining room and wait an equally long time. Not sure how often this happens but once was enough for us. Such bad form to place your guests at such a low priority. We wouldn’t go back.

Interesting experience. We heard that we should stop in here for the Icelandic Pancakes. They were pretty good, but why would someone in the heart of Cherry Country disgrace a meal with canned cherry pie filling? I had the Icelandic Pancakes filled with cream and yogurt topped with those nasty cherries, so I scrapped them off and used the homemade Cherry-Rhubarb jam from the table, and that bumped this review from three to four stars.

Best breakfast in Door County! Sunset Resort has been in the same hands since the beginning and has been on the island over 100 years. HIGHLY recommended.

(Review for food only as I have no need of staying on a hotel on the island). Best breakfast on the island! Try the Scandinavian Pancakes. Or the cinnamon-crusted French bread-type thing(I forget the name). So good! I’ve been coming here a few time a season for breakfast my whole life. I love it. Always good service with a smile and delicious food.

Beautiful. Peaceful. Wonderful. Step into a location as if from a Bergman film, and back just a little in time. Nearly mythic, Birmir after Ragnarök? Take the ferry to Washington Isle. Stay at the Sunset Resort. Family owned and operated since 1902. The descendants of the Icelanders make you welcome. The lake waves lap gently on the shore right outside your room. Have a sunset cocktail by the bay.(BYO) Restaurants for dinner are a short drive away.(Try the Washington Hotel restaurant. It’s part of a culinary school.) The milky way visible even through your screen. Comfortable and homey. I looked at most of the accommodations on the island. I like the Sunset best. Varveita essa frábæru Íslenska eyja hótel!

This is a resort located within the bay on Washington Island. I have never stayed at this resort, but I ALWAYS come in for breakfast– as that is all they serve. They have the best Swedish Pancakes and old world breakfasts! The menu is simple, but everything is perfect. I love the way they prepare the eggs, I love the sausage, and I love the view! The service here is always friendly! They will stop and chat and give you advice on things to do on the island. Great place, with great food. Worth coming in for breakfast, you will not be disappointed.
