This was one of the worst places at which I have ever eaten, including food bought from gas stations and truck stops. Every potato piece, slice of bacon, and bit of egg was mildly tasteless and soggy with a thick layer of nauseating grease. To make matters worse, they didn’t even get our egg order correct. When we told the server that we didn’t like the food, our complaints were met with disdain. Instead of offering to make better food or take the food off the check, we had to haggle with the on staff manager for a minor discount. The most shocking part of this experience was the inhospitality of this establishment in an otherwise lovely town. Fast food would have been cheaper, quicker, more friendly, and infinitely more satisfying.

Stumbled on this while passing through the area. Very good and reasonable prices. I would highly recommend.

Stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the new menu. If you dined here before and are passing it up because the old menu was a bit lacking, you need to swing by again. The salad I ordered was top notch and my husband said his medium rare burger was cooked to perfection. Pair that with a nice selection of beers on tap and we have a winner here :-)

Tula’s Off Main is the second best place in town — after The Inn at Little Washington, of course. There were a lot of options on the menu, and we enjoyed our meals. The crème brûlée was the highlight.

Give this gem in the Town of Washington a chance. Under new ownership; Fall is the busiest time of the year in Rappahannock as it’s on the way to Shenandoah National Park; the Town itself is charming, and we are all on Rappahannock time. Relax. Enjoy the charm of the Town and the people. We are not in a hurry for everything as in N. VA. The food is very good, service is friendly, they take time to answer questions about the area, relax, enjoy slowing down. Take time to just enjoy each other or friends with you. B&J

First, this review is based on my lunch experience on what is possibly their busiest day of the year, the Fall Artist tour in Rappohannock County. I imagine my experience is a atypical, but it’s still my experience. We read the menu while waiting to get seated. Told the server we had a commitment, and asked if the kitchen was backed up. She said no, getting served quickly shouldn’t be an issue, so we ordered a soup and sandwich immediately upon being seated. Since I could see the cauldron of soup, I requested that it be brought immediately. Ten minutes later, finally got another server’s attention, requested the soup, said we were on a schedule. Was told to wait, she’d check out it. Ten minutes later, with water glasses empty for most of those minutes, I requested water and a status on my soup. Server left, 10 minutes later I went to the counter to ask for a pitcher of water I could serve to our table, and to cancel our order because we had to leave. She said she was bringing the order out right now. So I go back to my table, and a few minutes later the soup and sandwich arrive together. I wolf down the sandwich, but say that I don’t have time for the soup. By this point, we joined friends(who ordered later but got their food at the same time), and since we had to leave they picked up the check. Which I find out later included the soup I returned. Basically, it was terrible service, and I’ll never go back on the day of the artists’ tour. But I do actually hope to go back. The appointment we had to rush off to was to view real estate, and we expect to be buying in the area. Based on other reviews, this is one of the nicer restaurants in the area, so I’d like to forget this experience and go back when I have more time and patience, and it’s not so crowded that I have to beg for water. In summary, it’s probably better than my experience, but don’t go when they’re crowded or understaffed.

Really did not feel that this restaurant lived up to it’s billing. Dined here after a long day of travel from NYC to Washington, Va. Restaurant was highly recommended on Unilocal and by our innkeeper. Purposely ate here the night before dining at the Inn at Little Washington as I felt it would be unfair to judge Tula’s after dining at the 5 star Inn. Food was decent but really not that great. Duck was a little tough. Mrs NMD’s seared tuna app was fatty and chewy. Her scallop dinner was fair. Chocolate chip warm bread pudding dessert was very good. VERY limited choices of Virginia wines by the glass despite being in the thick of the Virginia wine country(what’s up with that?) Waitress was very slow to help us and then seemed rushed. She did warm up after a few of her tables left. I asked a question to someone who looked like a manager and he had no idea how to answer my question about the food. Left full but pretty underwhelmed. Bar area looked decent. Not sure if they have a separate bar menu. Oh, well. The doctor(Notorious MD) realizes that all meals are not created equal.

The beer selection is ever changing and fresh. I don’t often eat much here but the cheese plate and smoked salmon have always been solid while enjoying a beer and sports on the TV at the bar. I highly recommend this great little place any afternoon on your way home.

We had lunch at Tula’s yesterday. Such a nice surprise to have a little gem tucked away near the courthouse and county offices. My husband had the French dip and I chose the Cobb salad. Both were excellent. We are from Northern Virginia and did not find prices objectionable at all. With wine and gracious tip for our beautiful and attentive server, the bill was less than most upper tier restaurants in Fairfax. Highly recommend this lovely little place. A farm to table experience with limited but excellent menu offerings.

Lunch here on a recent Sat. was fabulous! The crepes with a creamy honey basil sauce were so inventive, so delicious. Service is impeccable and prices fair for what you get.

I really wanted to like this place since it is one of the few restaurants in Little Washington and has great servers and a nice atmosphere. While the prices are a bargain compared to the Inn at Little Washington, the restaurant is still pricey, with entrees in the $ 27 – 30 range. Even so, I would have been happy to pay those prices if the food was good. But our experience with the food was not so great. I had a nice appetizer of avocado and lobster, but it was only half an avocado with chunks of lobster and, while delicious, I am not sure it was worth $ 17 for an appetizer. My wife ordered the tenderloin for her entrée. While seasoned well and cooked rare as ordered, it was so tough that it was inedible. She gave me a bite and I chewed and chewed but had to give up because it was so sinewy. And that was a $ 30 entrée. I ordered the scallops with penne. The scallops were tender and the penne was seasoned nicely but it was COLD by the time I got it. I didn’t want to return it only to have it microwaved, but couldn’t they have timed the cooking so that it would be hot out of the oven when it was served??? This was a no-win situation, since I was stuck with a cold entrée. So, in summary, our two entrees were hugely disappointing for different reasons. At the prices charged here, we are unlikely to ever return to this restaurant.

Our experience at this restaurant was just awful. We were stopping through Washington last Saturday while we were on a tour of the vineyards on the 211, and decided on Tula’s for a quick lunch because we didn’t really see anything else outside of the Inn that was open. Before I get to the negative, I guess I’ll start with the good. The bar area was very well decorated, clean, and nice. The good pretty much stops there. Our waitress was rude and very curt. I was with my parents who were visiting the area at the time and the waitress made them feel like she had absolutely no desire to engage in small talk or pleasantries. When the food finally arrived, she had gotten my order completely wrong. I had ordered the beef brisket and she brought me a burger. She begrudgingly offered to return it, but I said it was fine and that I would eat it. I didn’t want to bother her anymore than she already was, so I let it go. The food itself was also pretty terrible. I wish I would have taken a picture of the burger because it was almost comical. The meat patty was slightly smaller than a hockey puck and it was surrounded by two massive buns that completely masked the taste of the patty in stale bread. Needless to say, we ate our food as quickly as possible and left because we were made to feel very unwelcome. There probably aren’t very many restaurants in the town, but even if Tula’s was the very last one, I wouldn’t go back.

First, a caveat: For an urban/suburban/populated area, this restaurant would probably rate a 2 – 3 in my opinion. However, considering Washington has a population of 135, I’ll try not to compare it to cities that are hundreds of thousands of times its size. I dined only in the bar area, and didn’t even see the remainder of the restaurant, but it has a comfortable modern atmosphere, while still maintaining elements of local flavor. It has clearly been updated, and it seems clean and inviting. The bread basket contained tasty rosemary biscuits that were a great first impression of the food. The dishes we ordered were as we expected from the menu descriptions, and also delicious, with no problems. The menu here seems suitably adventurous while still maintaining some of the«1990’s chic» you’ll find in most of the other rural area restaurants. I appreciate that specific local farms are noted as well. Prices were reasonable and what you might expect from somewhat of a touristy area, but the portions were plentiful. Service was super friendly and prompt. In short, if you’re a foodie from a more urban area, and find yourself in the shadow of Shenandoah for a few days, this restaurant is where you’ll feel most at home.

Really a great place. Rather busy on a Saturday night with a really good band in town, but the attention was adequate. Food was very natural and unpretentious. I had the Oso Bucco and it was plentiful as well as delicious. I would have liked a richer ragu, but that is just a chef’s choice in how he constructs the dish and it was great. Price wise this place is a bargain, especially with it being in the shadow of the Inn at Little Washington.

While the food is very good, I have to say the service is the best part. All the waiters are very friendly with one time my friend and myself actually conversed with the waiter on the news of the world. This gives Tula’s a homely feel while also being a semi-fancy restaurant. It’s a little expensive but worth every penny.

We stopped in for dinner and expected something nice, but not one of the top we’ve experienced… it truly was incredible! The dishes were all prepared beautifully, plated perfectly and offered incredible flavors! Their scallops are AMAZING and you get 4HUGE scallops in the dish for only $ 24… What a great deal! The Jambalaya was the best we’ve ever had… completely fresh with so many flavors bursting in each bite — WOW! They even offered a great salad to start and the potato bacon soup was incredible too. Service was very well done. Everyone was happy to be there and very attentive, polite and offered good suggestions. We definitely look forward to going back — — SOON!

Tula’s Off Main was closed for a while and had reopened with all new seating and kitchen area. They have an outdoor patio area and are working on a unique bar, which is to open on July 4th. The food has been upgraded too. Chef Tom Nash serves great entrees with a slightly cajun twist. Desserts are fabulous and the coffee is from Central Coffee Roasters. Very friendly staff. Excellent service. I love this place!

This is a very welcome addition to the county. They have good drinks, great soup and tasty sandwiches. They have managed to pull all that off while having an attractive and professionally run shop. Hard to find that around these parts, when it comes to a place to get a bite, there are not many joints that even take credit cards in Rappahannock, certainly not any of the casual eateries. So walk in here with confidence! You can get a good cup of java, a tasty bite to eat and by God, whip out the plastic and charge it if you want!
