When I drive past this place I think to my, who would go into a big piece of cheese. Boy was I wrong. A couple of people recommended that I check it out. They have a decent selection of wine and beer. A good choice of cheeses and spreads. They also make great sandwiches for only $ 6. They make their own bread. This is the place locals go to get a good sandwich. Do yourself a favor and check out this place.

Five shiny stars for another great childhood memory. I have always loved the little yellow, cheese-shaped building with the cute mouse on top. One of my favorite landmarks which I hold dear as this shop brings back wonderful flashbacks of family vacations to Wells. I truly admire the fact this store is still successfully carrying on its legacy, yet has not changed a bit since I was a child. Any building shaped like a wheel of cheese and stocked with wine is certainly worth a good rating in my book. Of course, as a child I was not shopping for wine, but i looked forward to pointing out the mouse as my dad drove along Route One. This store maintains its dated, yet charming and unique character. If you are expecting a modern, trendy wine bar type atmosphere you will be disappointed. The cheese shop does, however, stock a very expansive selection of wines and beer. The cheese stock is a bit limited, but this store is full of other hidden treasures and snacks. It really is the perfect place for stocking the cottage while in the area on a summer vacation. The store contains a deli with a decent selection of delicious sandwiches. Yes, beyond the wine selection it may resemble a convenient store, but it certainly will be the most unique convenient store you have ever shopped at. The owner is always helpful and friendly and cheers to him for maintaining the cheese shop’s success over time. Yes the building may look a little bit shabbier in recent years, but some things, like wine and cheese, get even better with age :)

To everyone writing bad reviews… Especially the person who just«drove by», shame on all of you. I don’t live in Maine anymore, but I would buy a plane ticket from FL to go here and get a sandwich to take down to the beach. Seriously one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in my entire life. It may not be a pretty place, but they can make a mean sandwich.

very nice people an decent selection. Worth stopping in if not just for a photo of the cheese shaped building.

This little store is right near my house and it’s actually come a long way over the years. It certainly doesn’t look like much but what it lacks in esthetics and structural integrity it makes up for in quality. First of all the sandwiches are top notch — the capicola is phenomenal. They have a great selection of unique cheeses but don’t overlook the homemade spreads and dips. There’s a broad selection of beer and wine as well. The quaintness of this shop is complimented by the strange but friendly owner who is there everyday. Great hidden gem!

Bottom line: $ 81.5L bottle of wine. Cheap & fancy cheese. $ 10 – 15 for a great time. Neat and cozy shop. Do it — great service

I give this place fives stars, but I can completely understand why others may not. It’s not squeaky clean or well merchandised. It’s not very«Target» or «Costco.» But it is so many other things! First — if you are into wine, then this will be a treat! The selection is varied and changes frequently. I know what I like and have a bad habit of picking my faves, but this place gets me excited about trying something new. The selection is perfect — not too many where you get overwhelmed, and not too few. It’s exciting for we winos! And then the«treats» are just as varied and exciting. Cheese, salami, pickles, pâté, etc. And then there’s Skin. He’s so lovely. He’s chatty and interesting. He’s opinionated and engaging. He makes you hope you finish your wine quickly so you have an excuse to go back in there. I don’t live near here — just vacation here. Wish I had a place like this near me.

I think there was a chain of these cheese shaped stores when I was a kid in VT. This is the only one I’ve seen in many years, so I had to try it. It is now my go-to place to pick up a sandwich and maybe a Maine microbrew on the way to the beach. The sandwiches are great and reasonably priced and the couple running the store couldn’t be nicer. My favorite local brew is Geary’s summer or ale. I’ve also found some great microbrews in cans here.

SKINS! Skin is the man. Period. I always leave with a smile on my face. The Sandwich is where its at. $ 6.00 for a cold cut sandwich on a fresh baked roll. choose your meat, cheese, veggies and condiments and its fast, cheap and way better for you than mcdonalds or subway.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t even go in. We passed it… and we wanted some wine and cheese. And then we stood outside the door and it was clearly a convenience store. Waste of time turning around.

Five stars for their wine selection, three stars for beer selection, two stars for the cleanliness and overall building… it definitely needs a serious face lift. Staff seemed alright. Not too nice but not bad. Just doing their job. Don’t be looking for exceptional customer service here. Overall, I only go there if I need a nice bottle of wine.

Hey Skin! It’s Eric and Cheryl from Boston!!! We come to Maine at least 3x’s a year and the first stop we make is here!!! We stock up on great beer, wine and delicious cheeses and snacks for our hotel! It is never the same experience when we come in the winter and this shop is closed. We have such great memories of chatting, joking, and laughing it up with Skin! He lets us try some of his new favorites for free and he always makes you feel welcomed. Do not come here if you do not have a good personality bc you will not fully enjoy the experience. Heck, your on vacation or better yet, getting some booze! Who better to get it from then SKIN! He is always a pleasure and a lot of laughs!!! Whoever comes here, will not be disappointed! Have fun and laugh a little :) Also, who doesn’t love a store shaped like a giant piece of cheese haha!

I LOVEMYEXPERIENCE — many thanks for posting reviews. I would never have walked in based on outside décor but I am so glad there were reviews up on Unilocal. I agree with Zachery –this place is really«cool». Service was friendly and superb. I loved chatting with the guy behind the counter. I also got some local Maine jams+honey to take back home. =) Do u know how they come up with blueberry honey… well don’t google it… go visit this shop and chat up with the locals and meet new friends. =)

This place is the epitome of cool. For all the people giving it low reviews… you don’t get this place. Its not supposed to be a fancy high end deli. Its a dingy dark wine cellar/excellent deli with tons of character and excellent cheeses. Skin is a cool guy, decent beer & wine selection too and they have a soft serve ice cream place next door that has 24+ flavors of soft serve. If you want a nice dinner or are expecting a high end deli… go back to mass. If you want quality food, a great sandwich and to go where the locals go… then go here.

I remember this business, or building rather, since I was a young kid. It is shaped like a large round wheel of cheese, with a slice of out it for a door. It is attached to an old barn. Located next to the auto museum in Wells, I was excited to finally stop and go in to check it out. My excitement was quickly extinguished as I entered. The inside was smelly(mildew?) as was dark and dinghy. The shelves had some bare minimum groceries. The back in the barn area, was the cheese island with some high end cheeses, both domestic and imported. Over the island was a plastic tarp, perhaps a roof leak? One end of the cheese island was a deli where one could order a sandwich or cold cuts, hard salami and so forth. The other focus of the store is wine and beer. Many of the wine shelves, were too, empty or did not appear fully stocked. My overall impression was that this place looked neglected and run down. For cheese, one may have better luck at Hannaford’s. Wine, this place may surprise you.

so here is the deal. im hesitant if i should even review this place. because its my favorite and i dont know if i want other people knowing about it, but since im a nice girl i guess i can drop some knowledge on you. first off this is a store that mainly sells great cheese and beer and snacks. fantastic wine selection and fantastic beer selection. then they also have a deli shop with a small selection of meat that you could get by the pound like in the supermarket but better quality and obvi a bit more expensive. lastly there is a guy that works there and he calls everyone«skin». hey skin how’s it going, skin hey hows your day, hey skin put it here… all above is said. he is a awesome guy. in the back an older woman, «momma or grandma» something along those lines and she makes sandwhiches, they are all 5 bucks each, 3 for veggie only. on fresh bread and freshly cut deli items. you want cheese they cut slices of cheese right there, you want solami they cut it right there, you want turkey again they cut it right there and then. the rolls are the best part, always soft and flakey and fresh. better in the summer bc they make rolls more often but still good in the fall after a cold surf sesh. my favorite sandwhich is: HA really? you thought i would tell you… you dont know me at all then
