worst hospitality I’ve ever witnessed. i walked into there thinking I was going to get some pretty good ice cream, but ended leaving without anything. As soon as I get into the place he said, can I help you buddy, and then proceeded to tell me that he was too busy to help me??? Literally didn’t want to serve me. What kind of business is he running? so surprised he’s still in business. Be aware before going in that he doesn’t care about his customers.

A great place for a scrumptious homemade bite and some tasty ice cream. Friendly counter staff and way too many amazing ice cream choices only help to seal the deal. I had the walnut chicken salad and white bean soup. Finished off with the mint chip ice cream. Clearly, almighty Zeus hath forged this café in the heavens.

Really great family owned restaurant with their own homemade ice cream. We stopped by for dessert and although a tough choice, the rich Chocolate Thundah lived up to its name. I will definitely come back for lunch and another scoop or two!

The service was top notch, and the food even better. I had an egg salad sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes (added onions at no charge). The egg salad tasted fresh and did not have too much mayonnaise. I ended getting a box for half the sandwich to save room for ice cream! I had a small mint and chip– not sure where they get their ice cream, but it was good (I happen to be an ice cream snob).
All in all– I would definitely come here again!

Delicious pastries and ice cream. He has a small but excellent selection of teas, too. The gentleman who runs this gem is one fine man. He is kind and genuine… and very much appreciated!

just finished my sandwich that i got from Coney Island. It was made from freshest ingredients, and almost melted in my mouth (I got a «cold cut combo» — Sotto #7 I think). The staff is very pleasant and the interior is lovely. Definitely coming back here (especially now that Keltic Krust is closed).
They also have good choice of coffee — wish they opened earlier than 10:30am :-\

Start with the really pleasant folks behind the counter, sandwiches like you would make for yourself if you had time, any flavor of coffee/​latte/​expresso and finish with just about any flavor of creamy ice cream, yoghurt ice cream or sugar free sorbet you could wish for. This is The Best Ice Cream in Town! The ice creams and the froyo are smooth, creamy, and the flavors are wonderful. If well-​made artisanal ice cream made in small batches is important to you, this is the place to go to. My personal favorite is the Chocolate Almond Fryo-​yo. Their cookie dough is divine – my husband swears by it. We love going here before hitting the movies next door at West Newton Cinema. Coney Island Ice Cream and West Newton Cinema are the best things about living in Newton.
BTW: the owner and his wife are really a great hospitable couple.

My experience goes under the category of «there really are kind people left in the world». I was buying ice cream and unbeknownst to me, my wallet fell out of my purse. Thought it had fallen out somewhere else, so called the police and cinema to no avail. Cancelled credit cards, etc. The owner, Fulvio, tried to reach me all the next day… but I only have a cellphone. So today, he brought the wallet to the WN Police who ultimately tracked me down. I am so grateful and feel this man deserves to be recognized and acknowledged as a genuinely «good guy». No bad vibes here. He was terrific! And the ice cream is delicious:)

I had the coffee heath bar yogurt, very yummy, my boyfriend had their hot chocolate and WOW it was amazing. Service was a tad slow, but it was worth it

The rich ice cream café and frozen Yogurt ALWAYS leaves me wanting more. The freshly made salads, custom sandwiches, homemade soups, provide you with a whole enjoyable meal.
Yes, as others have mentioned, the owners always seem to take their time, engage with a smile, and take note of something positive about you. On occaision, I have arrived just before they close and received the same upbeat treatment!
The community feeling so reminds me of my travels in Europe and it’s right here in Newton, unequivocally a small gem!

Formerly a fan, I will never return and discourage rewarding the gruff owner with repeat business. They apparently no longer give samples of their flavors instead the customer should «be decisive.»
The owner was there alone and had no witnesses to his outlandishly rude behavior saying aloud that I was «projecting my insecurities on him.» I’m not sure where that stemmed from (I got lost somewhere in the tale of woe that began with Jesus in Bethlehem). FWIW, they also do not offer a public restroom despite full meal service.

I will not go back to this place and would recommend that you avoid it. I went for lunch after bringing the dogs to a park and ordered 2 sandwiches and a soup to go. I also asked if I could use the restroom to wash my hands as they were pretty filthy and was denied. When I got home and opened the sandwiches they were both on Italian bread although the menu said baguette for one and ciabatta for the other. They were OK but very small and overpriced. The soup was standard microwaved fare. Very disappointing.

The ice cream here is really good, and it’s just down the street from me!
When I asked for a recommendation, the woman behind the counter gave me a new favorite flavor — mocha almond. It was amazing!
Rich and creamy ice cream. They also offer hand-​packed pints and quarts, and really take their time getting in the most they can in their containers.
Do remember it’s cash-​only. I think this has deterred me from going in several times before, since I pass them so often but so rarely have cash on hand. They do have an ATM, but a $ 3 surcharge for an ice cream trip isn’t really what I was going for. The CVS across the street has an ATM which may serve you better (Sovereign).
This place also serves lunch foods — sandwiches and the like — and coffee, neither of which I realizes the first time I stepped in. I’ll have to stop by and try it sometime.
However, I just like L’Aroma’s coffee and tea around the corner too much to try the coffee here.

I’ve seen several comments about the owner’s mercurial attitude, but I’ve only had good experiences. Be assertive, and friendly, and you will likely get that in return.

I got a rum raisin. I could see the raisins, but the rest of the «premium» icecream was pretty ordinary. $ 7 for two small cones seemed pretty hefty given that there are so many options if I went towards Newton Center rather than West Newton (from my pAlace in Newton Corner :)
The older man behind the counter is very friendly (I can see how people can get weirded out by that!).
I’d go there again only if I am in the neighborhood.

Went here a few times and each time got a bad vibe from the owner. He joking a little but there was a hostile undertone … it was pretty strange and definitely not the cozy, small business feel I expected from this place.
The kid scooping the ice cream was friendly but slow as molasses. Serving sizes were inconsistent in the group of people I was with and the ice cream was bland with chunks of ice in it. I live right down the street but would rather go to JP Licks or Ben & Jerry’s over this place, which is too bad because I’d prefer to support a small business.

I’m not sure if we liked the sandwiches or the ice cream more… but Coney Island is a big hit with me and with my friends visiting or shopping in West Newton. On a recent Saturday we decided to stop in at lunchtime. Sandwiches are, quite literally, Italian flavored, witth ingredients that remind diners of the North End. My sandwich, a «Sette,» contained generous helpings of mortadella, prosciutto, salami, provalone… all some of the freshest I’ve had anywhere in years, while my dining companion enjoyed a walnut chicken selection that I tried and found almost as heavenly. Enjoying it with lemonade made for an enjoyable light summer meal.
Dessert was, of course, ice cream, and the medium we split was quite enough for both of us. We had a chocolate variety containing Oreo pieces and both of us thought we’d get it again. Prices were reasonable for West Newton and the service was very friendly. My compliments to the chef, whose sandwich was one of the best I have enjoyed out in a long while. Definitely planning to return!

Honestly, I’m pretty amazed at the low scores some people are giving this place. The only thing negative I can see here is the décor. I have been here a number of times, and each time the guy behind the counter was super friendly, and very helpful. I have also met the owner who went out of his way to say hello and be personable.
And their ice cream? Phenomenal. I love ice cream. I love Cabot’s, I love Lizzy’s, I love Christina’s in Inman, I love JP Licks, etc. This place has them all beat. The texture is smooth, and the flavor is perfect. Rich without being overwhelming, present without being too subtle. Their chocolate — just plain chocolate — is like a whole new flavor I’d never experienced before. As is their oreo and coffee and blueberry. Those are the only flavors I’ve tried so far, but each is fantastic in their own right.
Anyway, I logged in to Unilocal expecting to see other raves about this place, and was completely amazed to see a couple single or double star reviews. I think you should go there right now and add your opinion after your experience, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
