Onyx is a favorite for a special dinner or occasion… we take friends and family there and always make a point of sitting at the sushi bar… in front of sushi chef Keith. Keith explains all of the different options and makes special customized rolls for my grandson who does not like unusual food. We love the food, the special attention, and the beautiful environment.

We are regulars at Onyx and we love love love this restaurant! We are always greeted and welcomed by the staff and JESUS is our favorite waiter!!! The food is consistently delicious and the ambiance makes for a lovely experience. After some trial and error with the dessert menu we have found the banana dessert to be our absolute go to! We just had dinner there last night and we look forward to going back again in the very near future! If you’re in the area, it’s a definite must try!!!

The food is amazing here. Best quality sushi in the area in my opinion. And the staff makes it even better — Jesus in particular is incredible. So attentive he knows what I need before I know I need it. This place upholds what the Four Seasons is all about for sure.

Just had diner at Onyx and I can say was the best! Chief Keith makes this experience one to tell your friends and family. I want to thank Keith for taking the time with explaining the fresh fish and how it is prepared. I will be there again.

We go here about once a month. Best sushi in the area, it feels more like a high end restaurant than a regular sushi bar. The entrance through the hotel is really nice, restaurant itself is beautiful. If you sit at the sushi bar and Keith is your chef, you are in for a treat. I’m not normally into rolls, but Keith is a magician! Ask him for the El Niño roll… you won’t be disappointed!

What I look for in an up scale restaurant is a dish that is «dimensional«that is something that blends and/or brings together flavors and tastes that stimulate the educated palette to a degree that has not been felt before. The Kurobuta pork chop is one of those dishes. I’ve had Kurobuta pork chops many times before but Onyx has mastered the combination of flavors that accomplishes just that ! I am truly impressed !

As the big doors of the Four Seasons were opened for us, I hoped my husband’s birthday dinner would be special. Arriving at ONYX we were pleasantly greeted by the hostess and were seated at a lovely table by the window. It was quiet and welcoming with candlelight providing a pleasant soft glow. Jose, our server extraordinaire paid attention to every detail. On his suggestion we started the evening with two types of edamame, sea salt and roasted garlic sesame. My husband was pleased to find his favorite Japanese whiskey while our friend ordered sake and his wife and I enjoyed a merlot. We were very fortunate to meet ONYX restaurant Head Chef Masa Shimakawa who came by the table to say hello. We really appreciated his suggestion on the Hamachi Ponzu. It was presented beautifully, as a flower with petals. The flavors were an infusion of spicy and sweet. He also recommended the Ahi Tuna Poki Tartare which came on crispy rice offering a blending of textures and flavors. In addition we ordered the Volcano Red Dragon, and White Dragon rolls, all artfully prepared and delicious. Each dish was a showcase in itself. For the entrees, three of us ordered the Miso Black Cod which was cooked to perfection. It was complimented by a side of seasoned spinach and a delicious eggplant vegetable mixture. The Grilled Teriyaki Beef Tenderloin complimented with daikon and baby vegetables was also perfectly prepared and savory. For dessert, Jose suggested the Banana Spring Rolls with three dipping sauces. Let me tell you, it was the perfect ending for such a fabulous evening. The warm bananas complimented by plum jelly arrived in a light wrapper. One mouth watering bite and we knew it was really luscious. The caramel sauce, passion fruit sauce and crème angelaise complimented the rolls. It was hard to choose a favorite. In addition, ONYX was kind and surprised my husband with a fruit dessert plate with happy birthday written in chocolate. Our fried ordered loose leaf blue peacock tea to accompany the banana spring rolls. The fragrance of the tea was evident across the table. The cast iron tea pot keep the tea at just the right temperature. We felt like royalty, the evening was indeed magical. Highly recommend.

This is one of those situations where I wish I could rate food and service differently. First off the food was great. Beautiful presentation. Lots of great flavors. The downfall… HORRIFIC service. For myself, a restaurant inside a Four Season’s would & should have impeccable service, as I have experienced at any other Four Seasons restaurant.(bar inside the hotel, perfect!) My husband & I went here after purchasing a deal on line. We are new parents & were looking forward to date night. Menu was pre fixed and came with a flight of sake. Perfect right? A little taste of everything. 2 courses came & went then I asked«doesn’t our meal come with a flight of sake?» «oh ya are you ready for that now?» um hello, you never asked if we wanted it. My water glass sat empty most of the night and was refilled once after several unsuccessful attempts of requesting a refill. The kicker for me was I love a slow paced meal. I like to enjoy my cocktail and conversation with my husband. We have eaten at some fantastic eateries(i.e. Cyrus in Napa Valley) together & both enjoy a slow paced dinner. We don’t like a wham bam thank you mama when it’s date night. No worries here what so ever, parties that came in after us also eating front the same fixed menu left before us. Our reservations were at 7:30 we left at a quarter to 11.(I hope you can sense my sarcasm) Several other issues happened during our dinning experience but I figure this is already a lengthy review & most people don’t care to read something so lengthy. I will end with this. We did write a compaint to the restaurant the following Monday. 2 weeks later we have yet to hear anything back. No apology. No please come try our restaurant again. Nothing. Nada. Not even acknowledgment of either the email or letter sent. Because of this I finally gave in and wrote a review. Because of their lack of concern and lack of customer service beginning with servers all the way to management, this is why I would tell anyone and everyone to not bother with trying this place out. Their are tons of restaurants out there with better service and better attitudes that you could take your hard earned money to. Sorry for the lengthy review but this place pisses me off.

Not at what was expected out of a Four Seasons restaurant. –Yellow Tail Collar was clearly frozen before it was cooked, since it had a slight char on the outside(normally a good thing) but was so cold in the middle, it had to have been not totally thawed before being put under the broiler. No seasoning at all, just tasted like plain, bland broiled fish with a cold center. –Sashimi was pretty good, but not outstanding. Tasted like medium quality fish. Not sweet like it should be. Cut in odd small little squares. –Scallops were excellent. The highlight of the experience. Sweet, fresh, clean taste. I wanted more. –Tempura…1 little eggplant, a mushroom and two shrimps. I expected more, but regardless, it was underwhelming. «Bland batter» best describes this dish. –The roll we ordered was pretty good, but the sauce it came with was horrible. Almost like a mustard vinegar… not sure, but waaaaayyyyy too much vinegar to be coming anywhere near a roll. I expected more out of ONYX. Being tucked in a hotel of such prestige, one would expect culinary bliss but, sadly, a Two Star at the Four Seasons.

Love the Four Seasons in Westlake and I LOVE this restaurant! It’s the perfect atmosphere for a family outing or a romantic date, the service is impeccable, and the beauty of the hotel only adds to my love for this restaurant. My favorites here are the miso black cod, popcorn shrimp, and hamachi.

High class Japanese restaurant with good service, food, and ambiance for a hotel restaurant. The view is of a garden with waterfalls and it’s pretty at sundown if you get there in time. The food was good but not the best Japanese I’ve ever had. The miso soup was particularly good. Also has a nice bar and easy reservations on opentable.

This place is in the Four Seasons Hotel, I was staying there with my family and we decided to try it out. Not so impressed, the restaurant really just pushed all my buttons. Ambience: I don’t know what it is about these upscale restaurants and lighting, but I think they spend too much on food to save for lighting — I couldn’t see a thing. The sushi bar is right inside the kitchen, which is fully visible. This usually looks chic and nice, but in this place, the tiling in the kitchen looked like a school cafeteria. That large clock in the back of the kitchen only makes it look even tackier. I was really unimpressed by the ambience in the whole restaurant, it just seemed messy. The music was ridiculous, the top twenty list of 90s music didn’t fit the environment at all. Listening to something a little quieter would’ve helped too, had to shout to hear people. Service: Okay service, but at this price, I expect MUCH better. We asked about the special several times and we just asked our server if it was good. He kept telling us how it was prepared but he never once said anything about the actual flavor or texture. And our server just kept walking off, waited so long for the food to come. I don’t know what these people are talking about when they say the service was so great, wish I could say I agreed. Food: I got the Wagyu Beef Stone Pot — it was alright… The hot stone pot came out first, then a plate with the meat and a couple of veggies came out. To be perfectly honest, it was just red onions. It was meant to be a salad but they just over killed the onions. There were six pieces of beef total, once I fully cooked them they were decent, but not soft and delicious or anything to blow me away. I also ordered a sushi roll, I forget the name but it was a forgettable roll too — overly spicy, too gushy and somehow flavorless at the same time. The other people in my party ordered the Garlic Noodles and Hawaiian Volcano Roll. Garlic noodles were too oily, but alright. Volcano roll tasted pretty bad… I didn’t enjoy it at all. I mean, I know it’s Japanese Fusion but all the stuff on the menu seemed really ordinary and uninspired. You need good rice to have good sushi. That was horrible rice, it tasted so bad. I’m probably never going to come back here, it was edible food, but that’s literally all it was. This turned out pretty long but I’m just really disappointed — I wanted to like this place! Service was slow and completely unhelpful. Ambience is not up to par with its price range at all. If you want to have a good intimate meal or impress some friends with your restaurant choice, this definitely isn’t the place to go.
