I used to be a regular at Shanghai Gourmet. they still make some great dishes. However, over time the portions and quality have reduced and they appear to have gotten a little stale in their approach to the business, customers and value. A small thing — but even the cashiers seem totally disinterested when you pick your food up — whereas they used to be much more friendly and engaging. Hopefully they can figure out a way back.

I’ve ordered essentially everything on their menu and I’ve been really impressed. Although its absolutely better for takeout since there are 20 seats at most, I’ve always been impressed with their food. The chicken lo mein is always incredible, as the chicken they use is really fresh and moist. Their egg rolls are also a highlight of the meal. The General Tso’s chicken is absolutely the best though. I cannot begin to describe the sauce, as its sweet, tangy and just overall delicious. The service here is great, as they recognize their frequent customers, and if you’re sitting down to eat they are always very fast with their service and are quick to get anything that you may need. Overall, this is a restaurant that you may quickly pass as you’re heading home from Stop and Shop, but honestly it is one of the best kept secrets in Westport. The prices and service are both great, and the food is just stellar. It’s the type of place that once you go, you will go again, and again. And then the wonderful hostesses will certainly know your name, and you will not regret it.

This place has gone downhill! It used to be the best of the bad lot of Chinese available in Westport. Now, we’ve had rubber chicken on too many occasions. No more for us.

Our favourite place. We have ordered almost every dish over the past 7 years & never been disappointed. General two’s chicken is all white meat. Noodle soups are flavorful & plenty. Prices are very reasonable. They have a constant stream of take out orders since they don’t deliver & only have 6 tables but if you go a little off prime eating times you will probably get a table. I just hate to give away our secret of this little jem.

The food and service here are as good as it gets! I would suggest any of the seafood dishes. Great prices and if you are taking out your meal it is always ready in 10 minutes.

I’m always impressed when I find reasonably priced, high quality Chinese food. Shanghai Gourmet is one of these rare finds. While dining in can be an adventure(there’s maybe 15 seats…) it’s just fine if you don’t hit them at peak times as pickups are the biggest part of their business. The owners are friendly and have incredible memories for your first name, which they call out cheerfully when you walk in the door. The menu is full of the usual favorites as well as some exceptional Thai dishes. It’s my favorite hidden gem in Westport. It should be yours too.

I love this shanghai location instead of the norwalk one, my favorite is the brocolli with garlic sauce and the thai curry seafood soup for 2

Shanghai Gourmet’s food is clean and not greasy. However my biggest complaint is their food is flavorless. The food doesn’t taste like anything. And many of the dishes I have tried aren’t prepared like any other restaurant I have seen… this is not a good thing. The spicing was completely wrong.

Intimate seating. Brisk service. Very tasty, highly seasoned Asian fusion cuisine. Stand outs: steamed dumplings, duck soup, chicken w garlic sauce, shrimp fried rice.

I used to come here when I worked nearby and it was awesome! We came here regularly with my coworkers. Fast forward 3 years… I stop by with a friend and our kids. The prices are up, the portions are waaaay down, the flavor is way down and it’s just not what it used to be and not what I have grown to expect from decent Asian dining. I ordered soup, got less than half a bowl, ordered a shrimp lunch item, and got three medium shrimp. The portions are plated like a French restaurant. 80% plate 20% food… Way to save money! My kids love certain staple Chinese dishes and two of them didn’t even want to continue eating after a few bites. Too bad, because this place rocked at one point.

Inconsistent, overall below average. I have eaten here about a dozen times. A few times the food was good, most times average, and sometimes awful. I joked with my wife that they must rotate their cooks, and we hope the«good» cook is there on the day we order. But life is too short and I work hard for my money. Time to go somewhere else.

When we decided on Shanghai for dinner, I was excited for what I remembered to be fresh, flavorful, and good quality food. I wish the reality was as good as my expectations. Our Pad Thai was basically pink rice noodles with way too much fish sauce. There was not a peanut or a scrambled egg to be find in the greasy, sticky, and very unappetizing dish. Our Mu Shu was equally greasy and flavorless. Some of the vegetables, especially the baby corn, tasted like they were on the verge of being old. The spring rolls, which I used to love from Shanghai, were soaked in grease and ended up in the trash, along with the rest of the meal. And, to top off one of the worst meals in recent memory, my fortune cookie was fortune-less! At this point I had to laugh as my husband and I enjoyed our bowls of cereal and vowed never to return to Shanghai Gourmet. The food was simply not good at all!

Delicious Hot & Sour Soup. Yummy Veggie Moo Shu with Pancake. Not a huge fan of their Veggie Steamed Dumplings. (Came here on two occasions for dinner with colleagues.)

What happened? they took away the real plates and with it went their quality. i’m bummed, food turned cheap, still good, but the taste is off. last meal was pure grade c dog food. i hated it. good bye for now.

The food was alright, the service was pretty bad, everything served on paper plates with the red party plastic cups. It isn’t as cheap as this makes it seem to be, it’s actually the same price as some good chinese restaurants. It’s small, a little dirty and I just wasn’t a big fan.

If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would — the staff is lovely, the restaurant is tiny but clean and warm, and it’s become our go-to takeout place. However, the food is somewhere between good and uneven: everything’s extremely fresh and they use«real» vegetables, i.e. crisp, fresh batons of zucchini, jicama(like water chestnut but bigger and sweet), bell peppers, etc., but sometimes the flavors are lacking. It all kind of tastes similar if you order from the Chinese part of the menu(vs. thai/pan-Asian). One stand out is/are their noodle soups, which are huge and fresh and fun, delivered with the noodles and vegetables separate from the broth so they don’t overcook. We’ll continue to order from here until the Southport/Fairfield/Westport area gets a real Chinese restaurant, and then, I’ll confess, we probably won’t look back. One more comment: there is a «sister» restaurant in Norwalk on Rt. 123/New Canaan Ave. that is consistently delicious. I wish they would switch places.

I’d say this place is average. Clean, pleasant, nice. I guess CT really doesn’t have any good authentic Chinese food, which is what has gotten this place some pretty good reviews. We had the orange beef and singapore noodles which were both average. Waitress was friendly and service was fast. I’d go here again, but I wouldn’t make a special trip or take any friends from out of town here. I’d probably go to Lao Szechuan in Milford on Post Rd, even though it’s more expensive.

My regular local haunt for Asian food. Great spring rolls(you need to ask for hot mustard they make) not the crap in the tube. Best dishes — Wok shrimp, Singapore Noodles, Stir fry anything with Peppercorn sauce, Sambal anything. Big bowl soups. Service is friendly. Place seems clean, I have been in some kitchens watching the cook’s stir frying food while their cigarette ash drops in the wok!(special smoky flavor) Lunch special every day is a bargain.

Shanghai Gourmet probably has the best Chinese food in Westport. I have been eating in and taking out from the restaurant since they opened several years ago. The scallion pancakes, sesame chicken, and garlic chicken are all excellent. I would also recommend the Hot & Sour Soup, as well as the Grilled Salmon with Black Bean Sauce. My only disappointment is that Shanghai Gourmet does not deliver. Thankfully I live nearby, so I don’t mind driving over to pick up an order. That being said, delivery would be really convenient, and I am sure it would help Shanghai Gourmet rise above the other mediocre Chinese restaurants that deliver in Westport.
