Wheeling Donuts

I rarely give low ratings. After living in the area for over 35 years, we decided to try Wheeling Donuts. The owner was friendly and we went in the morning when there was still a good selection. We tried a Chocolate Cake Donut, an Apple Fritter and a Cinnamon Roll. They were each mediocre at best. Dunkin’ Donuts or Spunky Dunkers would have been better choices.
We much prefer the following spots for doughnuts, Danish or other breakfast pastries:
Cake Box in Arlington Heights
Jarosch in Elk Grove
Lovin’ Oven in Libertyville
Bennison’s in Evanston
Ambrosia in Barrington
Deerfield’s in Buffalo Grove
We miss the days of a good neighborhood bakery in every small town! I grew up with a wonderful one, Carlson’s in St. Charles!

I live in the city and still prefer these donuts to all the specialty shops. My favorite are their old fashioned, blueberry cake donut and red velvet. All the donuts are super fresh and delicious!

We love Wheeling Donuts. SOO much better than Dunkin and the best thing is, they use NO NUTS, so it’s safe for our nut allergic kids. Worth the little extra drive. The donuts are soft and fresh and taste delicious! Owners are always sweet and generous towards my kids!

Wheeling Donuts definitely has a lot to live up to when it’s surrounded by hundreds — literally hundreds — of mouth-​watering donut shops both in the suburbs and in the city. Considering the fact that Wheeling Donuts does have such a high standard to meet, I’d say that they do pretty well for themselves. They may not have all those fancy donuts you may find in the city, or sometimes even in the far-​out ‘burbs, but they got the cure that will fix any donut craving. Wheeling Donuts has the Buttermilk donuts, Old-​fashioned donuts, French Cruellers, Long Johns and Apple bottom jeans and the boots with the fur… whoops — did I say that? I meant, Apple Fritters. Anyways, you get the point — they have the basic and most essential donuts as well as the Red Velvet Donut which gives ya a little spice in your life.
I only had three of their donuts — the Apple Fritter (which you can get in big or small), the Buttermilk donut and the Red Velvet Donut. The Fritter is definitely the winner of this bunch — it has the right amount of fluff while also having the perfect crunch factor, thereby making it the perfect fritter. In a close second was the Red Velvet donut (though my fiancé would disagree with me). I always love anything that’s Red Velvet flavored — theirs is the best one I’ve had in the area, though. And with the Bronze medal is the Buttermilk donut. It’s not that this donut wasn’t good, but my god, it was so sweet that I felt as if I was eating pure sugar. Buttermilk donuts are my favorite kind of donut and I love a sweet one, but dang! My teeth hurt after eating it.
Aside from the donuts which are very clearly good, the service was also fine. I had nothing to complain about, nor could I complain about the simple setting that Wheeling Donuts is in. Don’t go in expecting the Ritz Carlton or anything, but it’s a fine diner — feel where you grt to enjoy your coffee and donuts for a nice little pricetag. Speaking of which, beware that you can use your credit card here, but if you’re charging less than $ 10 you will be charged a 50 cent surcharge. Other than thst, you’re ready to go dig in.

Delicious donuts! Especially the buttermilk! My co-​workers know when they see me coming in with that plain white box of donuts that its going to be good and that its going to be from Wheeling Donuts! Only down side is they close at like 5:00 PM :-(

The best red velvet donuts in the area! The donuts are always fresh-​no matter
what time you stop. Picked up a couple dozen and they were hopping busy at 5 am–
several regular customers buying large quantities is always a good sign. And it’s no surprise why they’re so well liked-​they have a great variety of classic traditional donuts that are moist and taste freshly made. One of the few donut shops I’ve found that is consistently good-​never tasting dry, stale or overcooked. Highly recommended!

Still lovin’ this place no matter what I get. Always fresh and quite large compared to other shops. The outside is deceiving and you would pass it by if you aren’t watching for it, but believe me once you find it and partake — –you will never pass it by again!!!

My wife told me to check out this place. A very homey, small family owned donut shop, tucked away in a small plaza off Dundee road.
Owners were very pleasant and friendly. It seems they serve mainly traditional donuts. So if you’re looking for «trendy» donuts, look elsewhere.
Had a double chocolate, old fashioned, and red velvet. All were moist and cakey and they stayed that way as we munched on them throughout the day.
I also got a bag of donut holes for $ 1.60! Can’t beat that price. Delicious.
I love how they just brown bag everything. Nothing glitzy here. Just keeping the focus on making tasty donuts.
Just a heads up/​tip, 50 cents processing fee for anything under $ 10 with credit card.
Would definitely come back for more tasty donuts and enjoy the fact we’re supporting a local family business.

Best donuts in the area and maybe all of Chicagoland if you factor in cost. You can get a dozen for $ 8.49, which is 3 donuts at Do Rite or Glazed and Infused…
There aren’t bourbon maple bacon or the modern hybrid style donut, but they have every traditional donut under the sun and they are cooked to absolute perfection. They are made fresh in house in the morning and the shop is managed by a nice old couple.
Favorites: Red Velvet, Old Fashioned, Sourdough

Best donuts in the suburbs! Move over Spunky Dunkers! So fresh and delicious! The Old Fashions are a must!

We drive a long way for the delicious blueberry donuts at Wheeling Donuts. The customer service is AMAZING!!!

If you are living in the boring suburban area of Wheeling, Deerfield and Buffalo Grove; your life is simply about seeing the same homes and same plazas with nothing interesting in them; or the same food chains again and again.
This asian owned Donut Shop actually brings some flavor to the area, a variety, a diversity that this area needs.
Of course they have better donuts than Dunkin, I mean way better. They are also priced Ok for the area.
The big fan of this shop is the corporate offices in the area, when there is a special occasion this place is definitely the place to go. Good donuts, good flavors.

The best donuts in the area. The owner is super nice and kept filling my box with donut holes and not counting. I got Over 80 donut holes for a 2 dozen price. Quality ingredients and I love supporting local businesses! I keep dreaming about those creamy donut holes. My MIL, SIL and BIL loved them too and they grew up in the bakery business, so they know what the good stuff tastes like.

Best donuts in the suburbs!!! I was very surprised, to say the least.
It is a very low-​key «divey» donut place, tucked in a plaza. I bought a dozen donuts for my mom’s birthday and we were absolutely blown away!

The best donuts that I’ve had in the area. They best Spunker Dunkers, easily. Their donuts are a little on the greasier side, but oh are they good!
They also sell empty jelly buckets for a dollar or so each. They’re great for storing bulk food in!

I got 4 donuts and 1 apple fritter, and the lady at the counter acted like she was doing me a favor by charging me for a half dozen donuts. It was one of those situations where I just walked in, and the lady was staring at me, so I started picking the donuts I wanted, without looking at the menu. After I paid, the lady walked off into the back and I took a look at the menu… donuts are $ 0.86 each and the apple fritter is $ 1.39. A half dozen donuts is $ 4.99. My 4 donuts and 1 fritter comes out to $ 4.86. I was ripped off by $ 0.13! Of course this is a small amount of change, but still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I don’t recommend the apple fritter, it was very large but flat, and more like a fritter cookie thing, very few apples inside. The donuts on the other hand, were pretty good, cheaper and larger than Dunkin. Got red velvet, blueberry, buttermilk, and old fashion. The buttermilk was out of this world good, it was super rich and creamy tasting. Red velvet was OK, not phenomenal but not bad. Old fashion was good too, crispy outside with the right amount of glaze, and soft interior. Blueberry was not very good, had a fake blueberry taste, and then very chewy and weird a day later (we had leftovers).
Credit cards accepted but $ 0.50 charge if under $ 10.

Small and friendly donut shop which makes fresh old fashioned donuts. They also make great donut holes which are great for sharing with friends or co-​workers. In particular, I liked the crispy and full flavored red velvet, the crunchy apple fritter, puffy jelly-​filled donut, and the fluffy long john.

What a great little gem stuck in a somewhat dingy looking strip mall. Upon arriving we were greeted by a super friendly young lady working the counter. I always judge a donut shop based on a couple of my favorite cake style donuts.
We bought a blueberry, double chocolate and the buttermilk. The blueberry was the best blueberry donut I’ve had. It was really moist and had great natural blueberry flavor. The double chocolate had good chocolate flavor. The buttermilk donut was awesome. I’ve never had a buttermilk donut before and it was definitely my favorite. The donuts are super moist and not greasy at all.
I wish there were more mom and pop donut shops like this and donuts were cheaper than the franchise places. Bravo!

My quest for the best donuts in the ‘burbs continued with a trip to Wheeling Donuts.
First, the shop is located next to a laundromat in a small strip mall off Dundee Road near the train station. The inside of the shop looks like a dive and there isn’t a lot of décor on the walls. But then again, that’s not what you will be coming here for anyway.
The donuts are located in a long case at the front of the store and they offer mostly traditional cake and yeast flavors. I didn’t see any unique flavors like maple bacon in the case.
I ordered a half dozen, which ended up being a little over $ 5 with tax. We ordered the red velvet, blueberry cake, buttermilk old fashioned, chocolate long john, chocolate cake and apple fritter. I gave away the chocolate cake and apple fritter so I cannot comment on the taste of those donuts.
The chocolate long john pretty good. I loved the light and airy texture that it had due to the raised yeast. I could have eaten a few of those before feeling them in my belly. The chocolate is OK and would be better if were dark as opposed to milk.
I loved the red velvet donut and was definitely my favorite one that I tried. The cake was dense and the donut was hearty. You could definitely taste the cocoa in the cake. The blueberry cake had the same texture of the red velvet cake. It had a lot of blueberries in it and it still tasted good a few days later.
I wasn’t a fan of the buttermilk old fashioned at all. I didn’t really enjoy the glaze or the texture of the cake. My boyfriend seemed to enjoy it though.
The woman working behind the counter was nice, but not overly friendly. She was soft-​spoken so it was somewhat hard to hear her.
Bottom line, I definitely would come back here and I would love to try the fritter. The red velvet tasted amazing and I definitely would come back for that.

This place is home to a new favorite that makes the list of one of the best things I’ve ever eaten — APPLE FRITTER (such a fantastic sugary-​crunch, so flavorful, so heavenly… omigoodness. it. is. so. good.)
Their old fashioneds are killer too — as other Unilocalers noted: the donuts here are so ‘fresh’ tasting.
The buttermilks (both the chocolate and the original) rock my socks off.
The owner is so kind and deserving of the business — he gave us a baker’s dozen! love it.
Great hours! donut shops/​bakeries usually close way too early, not this place!
