They handed me the remote control so I could change the channel. Many pizza places do not serve slices after lunch. Mario’s does. One slice of pizza was all I ordered. And it was gigantic. Lovingly oversized. My slice with fresh tomatoes, green peppers and Italian sausage was a success. Hot, fantastic consistency of cheese, tomato sauce and dough. This slice was around $ 5 — an amazing deal. My beer cost more than the slice. You could come here in a group or with your family, but the vast majority of business on this Friday night was take out. This positive flavor and experience still linger in my mind. I would absolutely eat here again.

On our first visit, we left loving the pizza but not the odor contained within the restaurant(it smelled like a tire or automotive shop). Didn’t go back for several months simply because we couldn’t get past the odor memory. Went back tonight and was greeted by the same odor(still smelled like a tire/automotive shop). Pizza was still good, but may consider ordering take-out simply because eating pizza in a place that smells like tires isn’t much fun. Would have given it more stars if it weren’t for the odor. NOTE: Got a great email from the owner after posting this review. He is very aware of the unusual odor and has made multiple attempts to address the problem with the building owner. He hasn’t found the source of the odor and is seeking a solution. I hope he is successful… the pizza is really good… very rich in flavor… and the slices are the largest I’ve ever seen.

I live pretty close to this place and I don’t know why we don’t come here more. I ordered takeout last night and the lady that answered that phone was incredibly friendly. That was a nice touch. The pizza was great as was the stromboli(although there was no sauce with it) and the side greek salad I had was very well done. We have eaten in a couple of times in the past and the experiences were very enjoyable. They do charge for water, but you get a big bottle for sixty cents, which I feel is very reasonable. Overall, I highly recommend this place!

I wanted to try out this Mario’s location because I LOVELOVELOVE their Hanes Mall location.(This one is closer to our home whereas the other one is closer to my work). We went with the 19″ pepperoni pizza. We love the thin NY-style crust. The sauce isn’t overly seasoned and REMARKABLY does not give my pregnant self, heartburn!(Seriously this is a HUGE deal because I wanted to die after eating Domino’s.) Delicious! Just note that this place does not deliver so your choice is either eat-in or take-out. Bonus though, pickup was about 15 minutes!!! The one thing I was debating adding to my review but I decided to was that upon entering the place, I was overwhelmed with the smell of some sort of chemical fume. I can only describe it as inhaling the vapor of gasoline/turpentine/paint/etc. it was almost like, there was completely no air– just thick vapor. It wasn’t even a cleaning chemical smell. I even asked the girl at the counter what it was because I was so overtaken that I was starting to get dizzy. She said she couldn’t smell it and I am in complete shock because after being in there for 2 minutes, I felt ill. As I got to my car, I called my husband because I felt so dizzy that I wanted to be on the phone with him in case I had an issue on the ride home. Even now, after being home for a good half hour, I still feel light headed. I have absolutely no idea what that fume was exactly or how the other people could be in there without it having and effect on them. This did not affect my review rating but I just wanted to put it out there. Not sure if this was a localized incident or if it always is like that in there. I would order here again but next time maybe send my husband just in case the noxious fume-smell is present again.

I have nothing to review seeing as we walked out disappointed by the fact that they refused to offer free water to a group that includes five children who were ready to pay $ 42 for two pizzas.

Marios Pizza has the absolute BEST Calzones. Unilocal suggested this restaurant to me, as I am from Missouri and didn’t know where to get great Italian. I ordered a Ham, Ricotta, and Mozzarella Calzone along with an order of Cheese sticks. The calzone was perfection. The crust was done just right. Not too dark, not too light. The cheeses were fresh and very flavorful. It made the calzone moist but not drippy. The cheese sticks were perfect. Marios is an absolute MUST!

I’m a long time customer. Until recently the rating would have been higher. Recently the Sicilian pizza was removed from the menu. The explanation? The manager thought it took too long to make. Wow. A pizza place removing pizza from the menu because it required time to do. Customers are a privilege. Managers are a dime a dozen. Owner are you listening? UPDATE. The manager wrote a note about listening. The menu remains sicilianless so not exactly true. And a weekly Mario’s customer now goes elsewhere.

We came to Mario’s Pizza with the Cumberland Dance Academy and it was an awesome experience. The staff was friendly with great personality for our dancers. The fool was superb. We can’t wait to dine again.

Ok, well after writing the first review, I went back and the experience was awesome. There was a lady with long brown hair that was behind the counter who was very attentive and made sure that I received my food fast. While waiting for my food I ordered a drink and she stopped speaking to the person she was talking to to ring me up. Very polite and a great asset to Mario’s Pizza!

Mario’s is good pizza, better than your average place, but in comparison to Burke Street Pizza, there’s no reason to not go to Burke Street(the original location is best). Burke Street Pizza is easily the best pizza in Winston Salem and likely North Carolina, so if it is in terms of convenience, come to Mario’s solely as a back-up. Can’t say too much about the place. There’s not much atmosphere, and I’ve preferred to do take-out instead of dining in there. I’m not sure why I don’t mind dining in at Burke Street, but Mario’s is usually empty and just feels a bit lonely inside. Anyhow, focusing on the food, a slice is pretty good and filling, and their whole pizzas are just as good. However, depending on what you get, a few people have complained to me about heartburn afterwards from the pepperoni pizza. Their cheese pizza, albeit the simplest, is surprisingly good, especially as a slice. The best way I can compare Mario’s to Burke Street is that when I have a slice at Mario’s, I’m not necessarily full, I’m just done whereas Burke Street, the glutton in me wants one extra slice. Parking is super easy and staff is friendly. Wait time is fairly standard for a pizza joint. My final thought is if you’re not going to Burke Street, go to Mario’s instead of some of those corporate pizza places. You’ll get better quality for what you pay.

the staff were rude and didnt’ tell us of the Monday specials when we ordered. When we asked her later about it she just shrugged and said«sorry» .She was difficult when we ordering. We asked for fresh garlic on our pizza and paid for that as an extra item but they didn’t put it on our pizza. When we asked her about it, she said she could bring some on the side. I told her I didn’t want uncooked garlic and she just shrugged. she told the cook staff and they just shrugged too. will not be back.

My husband and I tried this on a whim on our way to get Thai food. Quick change of craving and we were set to try some pizza. We ordered by the slice, two pieces of cheese pizza. We also decided to give their Italian sub a whirl. First, we drastically over ordered. The slices were HUGE. As big as both of my hands put together. I couldn’t even eat half one piece. Pizza was cooked perfectly giving the crust a nice crisp. I loved the cheese and sauce. The sandwich was pretty good, lots of meat and cheese, though next time I think I’ll try it cold instead of their standard toasted. All in all we may have finally found a good pizza place in Winston!

After reading Natalie N’s review, I knew I had to give this place a try. I went with a 15“pepperoni pizza and the large cheese steak sub, it came to about $ 23. The guy who took my order on the phone was one of the friendlier order takers I have encountered. The interior is nice and is pretty big. If you wanted to eat in instead of take out there would be plenty of places to sit. The pizza was really good. A thinner crust that was cooked perfectly. The Philly Cheese steak was delicious as well. Sometimes those things can be pretty bland, that was not the case with this one. Next time I def. want to try the Chicken Philly and the garlic knots that I have heard so many good things about.

Chicken Philly is awesome! Probably my favorite in Winston. Pizza is always delicious — and huge! I think they’ve recently increased their prices, so at $ 2 per topping it isn’t the best deal in town, but you can never go wrong with plain pepperoni. Good sauce: crust:toppings ratio. Throw in some cheese cake(they serve a generous«double slice» per serving) and garlic knots, and it’s a takeout meal that is carb-coma inducing and o so delicious!

Usually really love this place. We went yesterday and it changed it. We were going to order a pizza for dine in and we were told it would take around 45 minutes! It should not take that long to make a pizza. We were told someone had placed a large order before we got there. I understand you have to take care of that order but you can’t shutdown over it. Really disappointed me. They eventually made our pizza after we got upset with them. It shouldn’t have come to that.

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Winston. Plus the 2 locations are convenient so no matter what side of town I’m on I won’t have to drive very far. The pizza is always great. Very consistent but so is everything else there. Their Philly cheese steaks are the best to me. They will make it to order and they have awesome fries. The service have always been good. The guys working there are usually fun and act like they enjoy their job. Customer service is a huge deal to me and will make or break a place and their customer service is always great at both locations. I love pizza by the slice but they will also make you a whole pie and have many toppings to choose from. I LOVE that they have garlic as a topping. Not many places do. I just can’t imagine anyone being disappointed. It is New York style pizza and can be greasy but that just means that there’s a lot of cheese and what is pizza without cheese. :-) At least they have salads for any dieters because nothing else there is going to be low calorie but they salads are excellent too. LOVE the homemade dressings!

When it comes to pizza-by-the-slice in Winston, you have three respectable options: Elizabeth’s on University, Burke Street Downtown, and Mario’s. I’ve gone through phases with each of them and each have some endearing qualities. Let me begin by stating that I love Mario’s being in the Cloverdale Shopping Center. I spend my life in the Cloverdale Shopping Center, so having my favorite pizza place in the same location that I buy groceries, eat Thai, and refill prescriptions could not be more convenient. The one location flaw is that it is at the tail end of the shopping center, resulting in all the Panera folks taking up the parking spots. I don’t mind hiking from the other side, but it is an inconvenience nonetheless. You order at the counter a la Burke Street, so you don’t get the full service experience, but there are occasions when I don’t feel like bothering with a server. Fine by me. The soda fountain is available for all. The beer selection is not extensive if I recall correctly, but you can find something that won’t offend you if the mood strikes(which is likely what with it being a pizza place). The pizza. Like I’ve said, I love pizza-by-the-slice. I have a serious self-control problem when it comes to pizza, so ordering a big slice of New York style pizza along with a side salad is without fail the best way to ensure I will make it without having a stomach ache for the remainder of the day from overeating. Their pizzas are great. They aren’t overly greasy. They don’t seem to be warmed over like you get at Burke Street half the time. They taste fresh. I guess you would classify it as New York style. No fuss, muss… As far as the style/ambience/whatever of the place, meh. It’s clean, so it doesn’t offend me. It leaves a little to be desired, I’d say, as it’s missing that comfortable neighborhood«we’ve been here forever and are a staple to the community» kind of feeling which gives Burke Street a lot of its appeal. Maybe now if we could just get the food quality of Mario’s, the friendly service of Elizabeth’s, and the cozy feel of Burke Street into a single pizza place, we’d be in business…

Was visiting family in Winston and we got as take out. Pizza is AWSOME and salads are huge. Wish we wouldn’t have got it on my last night there. So i could have had them more than once. Next time I’m in Winston I’ll have it more than once. I’ll change 5 stars if they are as good the second time …

I go here all the time for lunch, the menu has many options(i.e. salads, pizza, subs, Stromboli etc). The facility is very nice inside and the staff are very friendly. I would say that the prices are comparable to other places with the same type of food and this is much better.
