When I was 18 Illicit was about as cool as it got. So were trucker caps, black and white checks and the self-titled Blink 182 album.
Illicit have moved with the times somewhat over the years, drifting from out-and-out punk towards some sort of punk/gangsta hybrid. While the potential affected hypocrisy of their ethos has always troubled me (because nothing says anti-establishment rebellion like buying identical, $ 85 hoodies), they’ve maintained a visual consistency over the years, and you can’t deny the impact they’ve had on Auckland’s ‘alt’ fashionistas.
But in these days of rampant technological development you have to wonder why you’d shop here when you can buy equally awesome printed t-shirts online for significantly less. Plus the internet sells them in a full range of colours, which Illicit has chosen not to (unless black is a colour range. And it isn’t, I checked).

My boyfriend is really into that NZ clothing brand Higher (not Lower, he informs me, it’s not as cool), so when I wanted to buy him a present, Illicit HQ was the first place I looked. However, I was left very underwhelmed by their selection of stock. There were only about five Higher t-shirts in there at the time, all the rest of the stock seemed to just be Bart Simpson or rubbish band tops.
The whole store is just a bit empty. It’s like they need to bring in a load of new clothes to fill the store up and make it more appealing to the young, alternative-cool crowd in Auckland. The last time I went in there, everything was black. Cheer up goth, there’s a whole rainbow of coloured t-shirts out there to bring into the store!
Thing is, with its prime location on K-Road and the fact that it’s somewhat of a yoof culture stalwart, having been around for nearly 20 years, it could be a really cool store. Currently though, it just feels a bit dated, a bit emo/goth circa 2003.

Illicit Clothing has been an absolute staple on the K’Road strip since 1996. It has been so popular over the years that there was a time when you couldn’t take two steps on K’Road without spotting a Misery or Martin Fuckin Emond design on a person’s t shirt or skin. The big recognisable artists aren’t as visible any more (Misery parted ways with the company and while Emond passed away in 2004, his work is still available for sale through Illicit), but the brand lives on in the almost exclusively black range in store. I’m a sucker for the range of men’s crew neck jerseys they sell — guys always look great in them. Yum!
