Modern China is a modern restaurant located on the 13th floor of the Times Square shopping center. The center is adjacent to a mini New York City Times Square where there are large neon billboards and numerous video screens displaying the latest in Chinese and Asian pop videos. You will walk through throngs of teens mesmerized by the gigantic video screens showing their favorite artists. We met up with my wife’s colleague who is a transplant from China to San Francisco to Hong Kong. As a Department Manager in a large business focused hotel on the Kowloon waterfront, she knows a lot about service and quality having worked in HK for over 20 years. She and her husband spoke highly of the restaurant and invited us to dinner on the Easter Monday Holiday. Reservations required! Dinner consisted of: — Complimentary Fried Salted Pepper Baby Shrimp which were nice and crunchy. — Chicken Soup with Dumplings which had a quarter of a chicken in the broth. The chicken was taken away, deboned and brought back with a soy, green onion dipping sauce. The dumplings were very good and the broth was clear and not oily. — Beef with Scallions on a sizzling platter was hot and tasty. — Braised Tofu with Mushrooms where the tofu did not break apart when picked up with chopsticks. — Garlic Spinach, a mainstay in a family style dinner. — Whole Peking Duck which was brought out and displayed to the table. The duck was taken away to a carving station where the Hostess encouraged me to take photos. LOL as I have had Peking Duck but did so to make the Host happy. Snapped a quick photo and scurried back to the table. Waitress brought out two big plates of nicely carved duck with a good balance of skin and meat accompanied by small plates of Hoi Sin Sauce, Scallions, Julienned Cucumbers, Minced Garlic, and two Bamboo Steamers filled with thin pancakes. The garlic went well with the crispy duck skin and meat. Carcass boxed up for the Hostess to make Jook for a later meal. Quality reminded me of Beijing restaurants where they specialized in duck. Impressed and I gorged on four orders. — Closed out the meal with Deep Fried Red Bean Pancake which was okay. Quite impressed with the service and food quality. Staff also took plenty of pictures for us using our cell phones and cameras. They must all be experts on the various models! Bathroom could be kept a little cleaner and men’s urinal had a clear glass window adjacent to watch the outside world; funny as you wonder who could be watching you. Ha. ha…you gotta laugh.

Its located on 13th floor of the Food Forum in Times Square with the movie theater. Upon exiting the escalators, its right in front. We got there at 11am for the RSVP line and we were one of the first ones there. The RSVP line moves quickly and efficiently though by the time the place opens at 1130am. There is ample seating to accommodate the first batch of eaters so no worries if you aren’t first in line. The food overall was pretty decent, but with higher prices than I’d spend on a normal basis. There are tons of smaller mom & pop restaurants that can make similar tasting food. However the ambiance and presentation is what you are also paying for. Their website lists prices/pictures and has English for non Chinese speakers so you may be able to just point to what you want. Cold dishes five spiced beef: Smoked fish is very flavorful but with many bones Mouthful small steamed meat buns Xiao Long Bao: Juicy and tasteful, 8pcs Green onion pancake: Requires a 15 minute cooking time. It has a great taste with the right amount of firmness Red bean paste pancake: Very tasteful. Shredded chicken with seasame oil and peanuts sauce: Just mediocre, I would skip. Its just normally a plain tasting dish so nothing special here. Dumpling in flower soup with rice wine Pan fried meat buns: Comes with 4 pieces Jia Jiang mein noodle soup with hot paste: I would skip this as I thought it was bland overall Vegetable in lobster consommé: Very flavorful, a great veggie dish.

Modern China is one of the many Shanghainese restaurants in Hong Kong. This restaurant is conveniently located on the 13th floor of the Food Forum in Times Square. The Xiao Long Bao(or soup dumpling) is one of the best I’ve had in Hong Kong. Why? The skin/wrapper is super thin and the meat inside is succulent and full of flavor. But be extra careful, because the hot and plentiful soup inside the wrapper is bursting out! All of these things are what makes Modern China’s soup dumpling the best in Hong Kong. The great thing is that they are consistent. Every time I visit the restaurant, the soup dumplings come out exactly as it did the last time I went. Everything is yummy on the menu. The only thing that we didn’t like was the fried duck. It came out really dry. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with anything else. Order away!

There are so many good restaurants in Hong Kong. We visited this restaurant last night per recommendation from a friend. It is quite good, but I have to say that my local restaurant in New Jersey can make some of the dishes better, and charge much less than Modern China Restaurant. It is quite expensive in my opinion, and the food is average. Service is very good though.
