Shanghai Min

This place serves solid Shanghainese food. There are many branches in Hong Kong. This is my first visit to the Causeway Bay branch in Times Square. The decoration is simple and clean. Surprisingly, it was not full during Saturday lunch time.
The Shanghainese snacks like xiao long bao 小籠包, pot stickers 鍋貼 and grilled buns 生煎包 were all very juicy and tasty. The filling of the pot stickers was primarily prawn, which is different from traditional filling (of pork and vegetable). I wonder if the switch was made to appeal to Cantonese taste which is used to dim sum? The salt & pepper pig knuckle 椒鹽小元蹄 is arguable fusion of German and Shanghainese, but it is well executed. The knuckle was more tender than the German version, juicy and succulent inside while crispy on the outside. Small sweet dumplings小湯圓 in most places do not have fillings, but the place had sesame fillings, which was a pleasant surprise.

Searching for a place that will take 7 people on such a short notice, our friend was able to get a reservation the day of for us all to eat here. Honestly though, it wasn’t super full and we probably could’ve came on a short notice but all in all, glad we made a reservation anyways.
Normally, my family will tend to order off the set menu as it is much easier to do but there will always be a ridiculous amount of food left over. As half of us were foreigners and the other half natives, we asked the natives to just order all their favorite foods to share family style so everyone will be happy.
We ordered:
chicken salad with sesame dressing.
Xiao long bao x2
tam tam mein
baby shrimp
braised pork
potstickers
string beans
Featured fish with pine nuts
There might be one or two dishes I may have missed but all of the food ordered was delicious and I’d happily come here to eat again.

I believe dinner was roughly 1825 hkd (roughly 237 usd). Since we split between the 7 of us, it was about 260 hkd/​$ 30 usd per person.

Classic Shanghai dishes done well and in an upscale atmosphere — the pork belly was delicious!
