Renge House

Renge House, I have no idea where the name comes from, is a great little store in Mui Wo, just a hop and a step away for the ferry terminal. It is a gift store that sells all manner of boho clothing, handmade gifts, greeting cards, jewellery, and little bits of vintage tat. Basically, if you had ever wondered where women by tie-​dye skirts from, then this is the place.
What I most like about Renge House, is that it has a great stock of very eclectic items, many of which you just won’t get anywhere else in Hong Kong. These items make perfect gifts for adults (albeit slightly hippy adults), as well as kids, so if you’re fed up of always buying in GOD or Mr Blacksmith, then this could be a good place to you to come and check out. I appreciate that it is also quite far to come to Mui Wo, especially from the main island, so if you’re curious to know more about what they sell, check out their Facebook page. The staff in the store are very polite and friendly. I like that they just let you browse without hovering around like a bad smell. They are also pretty knowledgeable, and are able to tell you the provenance on their products, especially the hand made items. The store is a little cluttered, with open displays and the like, so be careful is you have just come off a hike and have a big sack, or if you have grabby kids in tow.

Located between two less obvious stores Renge House sticks out like a the first flower in spring and it was for this reason that I walked passed the small display just outside and through its jingling door. The inside was just as much an ambush of colors as the entrance, the only difference being there seemed to be more of a structure to it. Clothes lined one wall, jewelry occupied the centre display and another wall while Balinese basket hung from the roof. It’s a small shop packed with jewelry, cloths, trinkets, and South East Asian accessories — the perfect place to search for a gift, which was why I was there.
While searching for a gift I unconsciously began to look for things for myself, especially among the 2^nd hand stuff. And by the end for a good thirty minute search I completely forgot about the gift and was debating between two items that would look great in my new flat. A pair of wooden hands cupped in a bowl shape perfect for keys and loose coins or a some scented candles for my girlfriend. Self-​interest won out and I bought the wooden hands, and they are super useful. A day later I went back eventually buying the gift from another friend and the scented candles.
I still drop by every once in a while, as the shop is between the Mui Wo ferry pier and my home, and I reckon I’d even make the effort to visit even if it was out of the way. It’s definitely a shop worth visiting when on an excursion to Mui Wo. The main reason being that it has things that most other stores don’t!
