Village Bakery

People in Hong Kong have come to expect little cakes, sweet treats, and egg tarts from a bakery. There’s nothing run with the occasional egg tart, not at all, in fact that was what my breakfast consisted of for about two months. However, a bakery in my eyes is closer to an establishment that provides freshly baked bread (not sweetened!), a few different types of it all warm and crunchy. Village Bakery is closer to the latter rather than the former.
This bakery is only a two minute walk from the Mui Wo ferry pier so a bit of a trek for you city dwellers, and perhaps not worth the trip unless it’s combined with a beach laze or hike. But as a Mui Wo resident it’s a breath of fresh air. I’ve been told by the doctor to lay of the gluten which sucks because I love bread and pizzas. Village Bakery is the only place where I can find spelt — an alternative to flour — this is not to say other places don’t sell it, only that I haven’t come across it, that’s all. They also offer pre-​ordered loafs of gluten-​free bread, which seems to be the craze nowadays. The prices are fair and the taste good, their staff are friendly and very helpful which is a huge plus in my books. It also has a cute variety of other products such as European cheeses, specialty teas and healthy ice-​lollies, just to add a different dimension on things! The owners produce all their breads in their restaurant across the road, The Kitchen, so you know the bread is fresh.
As mentioned previously there are very likely small shops around the city that can provide the same service as Village Bakery but to have one on Mui Wo is a treat worth savoring and a place I will surely be visiting again.

Village Bakery is the first of its kind — a real honest to goodness French artisanal bakery in the heart of a village, i.e., Mui Wo. Try their freshly baked Focaccia, milk bread, Madeleines, Sourdough, they even source fresh produce such as Iberico Ham, Olives, Cheese & even stock Bob Mills Flour for you to try at home! They also have a great selection of Italian and French Wine. What a gem in the heart of my island!

I suggest buying a lovely panini sandwich, couple of bottles of lemonade and parade down to Silvermine Bay Beach and watch the waves — sunset — what have you.
