Via Tokyo

Kurzum, der Laden ist sehr klein, aber sehr stylisch eingerichtet. Hauptmerkmal liegt in der Verwendung der «gesünderen» Milchvariante aus Hokkaido (Japan). Die Auswahl ist relativ übersichtlich. In der Regel ist es Matcha-​Eis, Milch-​Eis, rote Bohnen und kleine klebrige Mochis.
Geschmacklich finde ich den Hokkaido-​Milch wirklich erstklassig. Sie schmeckt tatsächlich anders als die Milch, die ich bislang kenne. Die angebotenen Produkte sind auch ein Augenschmaus, sodass an jedem Tisch die Besucher definitiv ihr Smartphone rausnehmen und fotografieren.
Leider gibt es nur einen einzigen richtigen Tisch mit Sitzplätzen, ansonsten liegen da nur Stehtische mit Barhockern, die auf Dauer sehr ungemütlich werden. Eine lange Verweildauer kann ich hier deswegen nicht empfehlen.
Wie zahlreiche andere Kunden auch, würde ich einfach das Eis zum Mitnehmen bestellen. Das geht schnell, man kommt schneller in den Genuss des Hokkaido-​Milchs und man muss nicht auf freie Sitzplätze warten.

LOVE Via Tokyo! The hype is real — it’s the best Japanese dessert shop in HK, and I’m so glad they have such excellent QC and manage to keep its standards.
Go for Green Tea soft serve if you haven’t tried it before — you won’t regret it. It’s one of the best matcha serves out there. Before Via Tokyo, I had to get my fix at Sweets House Cha Cha, but Via Tokyo beats everything out there hands down. The matcha ice cream is creamy and intense, and the lingering green tea flavors in your mouth after you finish your dessert will leave you wanting for seconds.
VT’s Hojicha and Genmaicha seasonal flavors are also my personal favorites, because the flavors and nuances are so pronounced and spot-​on. It’s difficult to find good Hojicha-​flavored desserts in Hong Kong, and Via Tokyo’s version reminds me of the desserts I had in Kyoto. For those who don’t like super intense green tea (I’ve heard male friends telling me it’s a bit too bitter for their liking), these two flavors are good alternatives.
That being said, the wait is long on weekends for dine-​in (which is why I always go for take-​away). However, they have a new branch in TST Cameron Road now, so do go!

My love for matcha desserts has become an obsession since Via Tokyo! I had their matcha soft serve items 3 times in 1.5 weeks.
The matcha soft serve features in most their desserts. The matcha flavour is intense without being overbearing and the soft serve is so creamy yet dense.
Highly recommend the matcha affogato, which is matcha soft serve with a side of rich, warm matcha goo that is poured on top of the soft serve (I’m not quite sure what the goo is made of. It’s similar to the liquid inside a chocolate lava cake).
The place is small and is usually full. Out of the 3 times I’ve been, I only found a seat on one occasion. The other 2 times I ordered matcha soft serve cones to takeaway.

I like to keep it simple when coming here, and usually order the matcha soft serve in a cone – it’s smooth with a great flavor, not overly sweet, and doesn’t feel too unhealthy (such a guilty pleasure!). Occasionally, they’ll have special limited time tea flavors to keep regulars who only order the soft serve (like me) interested.
Seats are limited and the place is usually full. Really, I’ve only been by once when there were empty seats available inside. If you want to wait for a seat, there’s a neat little line outside the storefront. Otherwise, you can head straight in and place your order at the back.

Definitely came here 3 times during our 1 week trip… The soft-​serve is so good, and the kuromitsu syrup (Japanese black sugar) that you pour over your ice cream is superrrr good. I also loved the matcha latte. Perfect creaminess! The décor is also very modern and clean! Loved it.
Sometimes the line is long for seating, but you can always order to go!

I had the royal milk tea flavor ice cream. It was good but did not really blow me away with flavor. Perhaps I’m used to the American flavors and find desserts in Hong Kong not sweet enough. I would’ve given this place 3 stars but the staff were really friendly thus the extra star. The place is tiny so best to get it to go.

Matcha Heaven!
Via Tokyo can be super busy with long queue for eating in as the restaurant itself is really small. I suggest if the line is ridiculously long, just order take out. Same yummy sweet without the wait!

Both were deliciously good. Love that the matcha flavour really come out without being too bitter or sweet!
Check their Facebook page for new flavour: Gyokuro Genmaicha Soft Cream (玉露玄米茶) and Black Sesame Cream Parfait just sounds so amazing!

Even though there was a bit of a wait, it was absolutely worth it! Their green tea ice cream tasted very genuine. I can taste the green tea very vividly. It was a large amount of ice cream so I wasn’t able to finish it all. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was very quite (which I liked). I most definitely recommend this place!

There is usually a super long queue outside this place. However, there was no queue this after as we walked by, so took the opportunity to hop in and try it out.
We ordered the Three Flavour Waffle, with Hokkaido milk, milk tea and roasted tea (?). Somewhat disappointing that it ran out of green tea, as the place is supposed to be famous for its green tea. (and this was just 1pm!) The soft ice cream was good with very fine and smooth texture. The flavour was rich and creamy. The waffles were crunchy.
Overall, a very pleasant and nice experience. However, would I stand in a long queue for this? Probably not.

Finally came to try this place out after having wanting to try it for quite a while. It’s rather far from the MTR station so I’ve never really been bothered to walk all the day, but after today’s experience, one thing I’ve learned — definitely worth the walk!
Food: ⁵⁄₅
The food is amazing, tried both the matcha and milk ice cream that they had, one with shirotama and one with mochi, they have a large range of flavours so it’s really difficult to pick! The flavour on the matcha was very nice, and leaves a pleasant bitter-​sweet after taste on your tongue. The milk soft serve is very milky and smooth, one of the bests you can find in HK definitely.
There’s not much of service because you pretty much just buy whatever ice cream you’re craving and then get seated at a table to finish your food.

Let me just preface this review with this: I hate desserts. I hate sweets. I’ve eaten ice cream MAYBE three times in the past decade. I’m just a savory girl all the way! So I was surprised as much as anyone when I loved this smooth, creamy ice cream. My friend wanted to stop and get something after dinner, and I felt like a dick leaving him to eat dessert alone so I got a plain original cone to enjoy on our walk to the MTR. First off, it was huge! It was only 28 dollars (cheap for HK!) so I thought it’d be a tiny little thing. No! It was hot outside and I could hardly lick it as fast as it was melting. The ice cream and cone were delicious and more than I could eat.
The shop itself was very cute and clean. Would definitely come here again!

I think this was the best green tea ice cream ever. And I don’t even like green tea ice cream at all!
This place was fairly close to Times Square so the walk wasn’t too far at all. We finally made it, we stood in line a waited to order. After 20 minutes over heard that the queue is for eating in! Okay seriously they need sign to let us first timers know!
So I went inside to order and I loved the set up of the desserts! But I’m not gonna wait 30 minutes just so I can take a pic.
When you order, make sure to get the mix cone! It’s so plain and simple but perfect. The green tea and the original blend together so nicely! Even the cone was perfectly and almost tasted like a wafer.
This place is good and perfect for anyone with or without a sweet tooth!

In Google Maps We Trust! The most important lesson we learned while trying to find Via Tokyo, a Japanese dessert café.
Although i don’t have a sweet tooth, all the mouthwatering pictures shared on Instagram forced me to pay a visit. Luckily when we arrived, there was no queue and seating was available.
Via Tokyo offers a great variety of sinfully alluring desserts and is a heaven on earth for matcha lovers.
I ordered their signature soft serve «Matcha soft cream» (cup: 32 hk dollar /​3.9 €; cone: 30 hk dollar /​3.6 €); the smooth taste lingers on ur tongue after every bite and the soft cream is delicious and not too sweet. Definitely recommended!

I came here twice during my week-​long stay in HK and I will most definitely have to go back many more times before I will be satisfied with trying all the matcha gems Via Tokyo.
[TL;DR]
I am stingy with giving 5-​star ratings, but everything is on point – the superb matcha quality, the creative and broad menu items, the whimsical and hip ambiance, the pure matcha /​抹茶 heaven in it all.
[THE DRANKS]
The matcha latte was probably the most commonplace, but it was good and I got the adorable latte art of a bear. I liked the iced hojicha latte and although the plastic to-​go cup presentation was not the most photogenic, the black straw made up for it somewhat.
[THE BITES]
The matcha-​uji ice cream swirl in the waffle cone is so perfect, it looks like it was taken directly out of a cartoon. Yes it is hollow, as revealed by one of my pictures, but the serving is more than enough to satisfy your matcha and sweet tooth cravings.
There are so many variations on the matcha soft serve sundae – difficult for indecisive people like me but a boon for picky eaters. I settled on a matcha soft serve with red bean sauce, soybean powder crumble, and mochi. Flavor and texture explosion! Notably, the match a soft serve is probably the very best I’ve had; the matcha taste is strong as you can tell from the dark green hue. It comes on a cute wooden tray and a cup of honey, which is definitely not needed but it looks nice.
They also offer interesting matcha baked goods: uji matcha mille feuille, hojicha cheesecake, matcha éclair. Need I write any more o. O
[THE MISC]
— The location is a bit confusing because of the windy roads in the area, but if you track down the address it’s not too random.
— It’s reasonably priced, especially since most of the food and drinks are quite filling, so I recommend bringing a stomach with space and/​or sharing unless you have an insatiable matcha monster appetite.
— The highlight of the décor is a swinging basket chair. It’s quite popular and usually taken, and if there are kids you will feel obligated to give it up to the 小朋友.

Green matcha ice cream with mochi and red beans, is the best bet to order here! It’s a great combo!
There were overwhelmingly a lot of people here and very limited seating.
It’s a delightful treat!

Not having the patience to line up for ice cream, it’s actually my first time trying the ice cream here. It was an early evening on a Thursday where we found no queue outside the store (finally!). Without a thought we went in and ordered a simple green tea ice cream. And, it was GOOD. Rich in green tea taste with an aftertaste. Very good indeed, no wonder it’s so popular.

Following its soaring popularity and success, Via Tokyo didn’t stay content and continued to innovate new desserts and flavors with limited time offerings at times to draw customers in. Here’s a few flavors I have tried recently.
Matcha & Hojicha Ice Cream Cone ($ 34) — the hojicha was a limited time offering and as an afterthought, it was a mistake to get the matcha and hojicha flavor together as the flavors ended up blending into each other and it was hard to detect the taste of hojicha. It was still very good as the ice cream at Via Tokyo is always super smooth and creamy.
Genmaicha (HK$ 32) — smooth and creamy, the genmaicha flavor was light and delicate with a toasty aftertaste. It may not taste like much at first but slowly grows on you and it’s perfect for those who do not like desserts that are too sweet.
Royal Milk Tea Parfait (HK$ 53) — actually I really like drinking Royal milk tea and always stock up to drink in the mornings whenever I’m in Japan. I was really looking forward to try this flavor and it didn’t disappoint! The caramel sauce and almond crunches can overwhelm the delicate milk tea flavors a bit but the buttery biscuit and espresso jelly complimented the ice cream nicely.

Love their soft serve here! I think they started the ice cream craze in CWB. There are so many desserts shop now. Really enjoyed their green tea, hojicha, and genmaicha flavors. They have also expanded their offerings to other types of green tea desserts since (e.g. rolls, eclairs, etc.) I find myself always stopping by for an ice cream cone whenever I am in the area!

You can spot this place as you are approaching by the line of people waiting outside for a seat. There are about 15 seats inside, but the good thing is that it generally doesn’t take too long.
We tried the green tea soft serve and the royal milk tea parfait. The green tea was quite smooth, but personally, I wish that there was a bit more milk tea flavor. I really love the royal milk tea parfait as it had a yummy cookie on top, espresso jelly at the bottom. Something I would definitely return for!
Definitely plus that the desserts are very pretty.

Was craving for some houjicha so we went to Via Tokyo to satisfy our houjicha crave. The houjicha-​cheese layer was thick, creamy and rich. Houjicha was on the mellow side, overshadowed by the intense cheese flavor, making the roasty and nutty caramel hint pretty subtle. The graham cracker base below added up some crunchiness to the layer above. Good that the cake wasn’t too sweet but better share it with others! Hmmm, missing the houjicha soft serve now!
Sometimes only soft serve itself is not enough, I mean come on bring me more matcha goodies! Among all the greens, Via Tokyo’s matcha éclair always have our hearts. The choux was made to golden brown, and we absolutely love matcha cream! Rich, dense and smooth, it also came with a hint of bitterness from the matcha. Just as perfect as their soft serve! Summers in Hong Kong are excruciating. Within a few minutes of going outside, you are already drenched in your sweat. Two things make it bearable: air conditioning and a great dessert place.
Via Tokyo is one of my favorite dessert places on Hong Kong Island. Located on CWB, this spot has been extremely popular. Via Tokyo does one thing well and that’s matcha. They serve matcha smoothies and other desserts involving matcha but one thing stands out, and that is their soft serve.
Their Matcha soft serve reminds me of Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham because of the various amounts of ways they serve it.

New flavors come out every so often! Smallish eatery so on busy days there will be a line out the door for a seat.
Well worth it though. Best dessert on Hong Kong Island, PERIOD.
