Every high street needs an independent bakery, or at least a chain bakery if nothing else. Until recently, Barnehurst had neither. Having received a flyer though my letterbox, I decided to give them a try one Saturday afternoon, only to find they were closed. It turned out they open early in the morning(like all real bakeries do), and also shut early in the afternoon, so I returned the next weekend to sample some of their fresh bread and cakes. It was all of excellent quality, and the service was friendly. I noticed they also had some seating in the shop, and a coffee menu, so presumably it’s got more of a café vibe in the mornings. If only I could wake up earlier in the morning, I could buy fresh bread each day. For now, an occasional cake will have to suffice.
